SAM DIGS HIS DOCSShop assistant Sam Lowerson is set to star in Dr. Martens’ international ad campaign after being plucked from the streets of Newcastle to be a global ambassador for the brand in 2015.

Style spotters from Dr. Martens teamed up with NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week scouts to seek out the city’s stylish characters and Sam, 23, who works at AllSaints in the city, was picked from more than 100 hopefuls.

Organisers are looking for 1,500 volunteer performers to play a major part in the Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony with Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler.

Forming a giant circuit around the Quayside, the mass cast of 1,500 will perform at key moments during the show. A celebration of the fact that this year’s race will feature its millionth runner, the event will feature live music, film and dance. Live Theatre has won planning permission for a £10m project to transform one of the last empty spaces on the Quayside.

LiveWorks will create office space, an outdoor performance area, and a public park, and include the refurbishment of a Grade II-listed Almshouse to create a writing centre for children and young people. LiveWorks will provide opportunities for businesses, artists, children and young people. The project will also help to secure an income for the core work of Live Theatre.www.live.org.uk

Ever wanted to swap the crowded city streets of Newcastle for an underground walk down to the riverside?

The Ouseburn Trust is offering just that with guided tours of the The Victoria Tunnel throughout the summer.

Charlotte favours the vintage clothes stalls, vinyl records and handmade jewellery, while Katie gets very excited about imported Japanese Manga comics and old-fashioned sweets in paper bags.

I spend an inordinate amount of time listening to a wide selection of music, and Newcastle’s scene is in rude health with something to please fans of every genre. So, if you prefer a little more meat to your beats or swing in your soul, there’s likely to be a venue where you can get your kicks.

Head of Steam offers a variety of heavy rock this month, with grunge metallers Edenthorn’s EP launch on July 12 a highlight. Also on the radar for fans of the heavier musical persuasion is Trillians. Recently saved from closure, the traditional rock bar plays host to punk rockers GBH on July 20.

Digital may be a mecca for clubbers but local promoter Think Tank? is adeptly programming some great emerging acts, too. NYC’s The Slackers bring ska, reggae, dub and soul sounds to the venue on July 9.
