Welcome to our first newsletter of 2014 Thanks to the grant from NHS England of £367,860 work on our new Therapeutic Suite is now well underway. I’ve been watching it grow with a great sense of excitement. It’s a fantastic way to be able to re-launch our community services which you can read all about in this newsletter.

The new services mean we’ll be able to help more patients and their families earlier on in their illness, I’m sure you know hospice care isn’t just about dying well, it’s also about living well.

However we couldn’t do any of this without you, so on behalf of everyone at the Martlets I’d like to thank you for your support.

Very best wishes

CarolineChief Executive Officer

Thank you Doris Instead of presents for her 97th birthday last year Doris Aldridge very kindly asked for donations to the Martlets, and raised an incredible £400! On behalf of everyone at the Martlets we’d like to say a very big thank you! For more information on making a donation see page 10

As you can see from this artist’s impression, the new entrance to the Martlets Hospice will be bordered on both sides by walls of translucent glass bricks, allowing light to flood into and illuminate the Welcome Gallery.

Lit by sunlight in the day and beautiful lighting at night, the Welcome Gallery will represent a celebration of life. We are inviting Hospice supporters, be they individuals, families, groups or companies, to show their support by sponsoring a glass brick. Names will be signwritten onto a brick and sponsorship can be in

your own name or that of a loved one whose life you would like to celebrate.

Sponsorship costs £500 with names remaining on the bricks for a minimum of 5 years. This can be paid in one payment or over 10 monthly payments of £50.

To sponsor a brick contact Elizabeth Baxter on 01273 718785 or [email protected].

Martlets day services Keeping people independent

150 calls a daySuccess for the Palliative Care Partnership

Legal & General raise a six-figure sum Local insurance company, Legal & General have raised an astounding £104,936 for the Martlets over the last 6 years. The Hove-based company first chose us as their charity for 2007, and staff worked incredibly hard to collect this amount.

Besides having collection boxes in their offices, their efforts included holding dress-down days, joining us at sponsored events like the Martlets’ Midnight Walk and the Noon Walk, and running a book exchange scheme. Their efforts were boosted by Legal & General’s employee match-funding scheme, which added even more incentive for staff to get involved. Staff have also collectively volunteered hundreds of hours to us over the years.

Staff themselves choose where the money they raise will be spent, choosing from our wish list. To date their donation has bought:

•6armchairs,5beds,18televisions and garden lights for our Hospice.•191daysofhospicenursingfor

patients in their own homes•275counsellingsessionsfor

patients and their families •82daysofhospicenursing

for patient in the Hospice In-Patient unit.

The money was formally donated at an event held on 16 January. We’d like to thank everyone involved for their time, enthusiasm and generosity.

We’re very pleased to report that our extended range of day services are now up and running. These services, which have always been available to our Hospice patients, are once again available to support patients with serious life-limiting illnesses who are living at home.

Patients and their carers can now visit our Rehabilitation Team at the Hospice for help and advice on mobility issues and keeping active. They can get advice on applying for benefits at our weekly Welfare Benefits Clinic, and our social worker

In Spring last year we formed the Palliative Care Partnership with the Sussex Community NHS Trust to give patients a central point of contact for all the specialist advice and support they need.

As part of this, we launched a 24-hour helpline. By the end of January we had already had nearly 500 new referrals to the Partnership, and the helpline was receiving on average 150 calls a day.

and chaplain are on hand if they need other practical or spiritual support.

Over the next few months we’ll be expanding these day services to include a complementary therapy service (read more on p9), legal advice clinics, art and music workshops plus self help and support.

Our day services, like all our services are free of charge and available to patients and their carers living in Brighton and Hove. Patients do need to be referred to the service by their healthcare professional.

Many of our calls are from patients with questions about how to manage their symptoms, but we’re also able to have important conversations with both patients and their families about how they’d like to be cared for in the future. It may not be an easy conversation to have, but being clear about patients’ wishes for the end of their lives has meant that 80% of our patients have died where we know they wanted to be.

Save the date – 13th June 2014 For the biggest girls’ night out of the year

Our biggest fundraising night of the year is back and we need you to sign up. Whether you’re a Midnight Walk regular, or, a first timer, we can promise you an amazing atmosphere as hundreds of women take to the streets of Brighton & Hove at midnight.

Last year our brave walkers battled through wind and rain, but every single one of them made it back and between them they raised more than £112,000! This money will enable us to care for two patients every day this year, in their own homes.

Over the years our Midnight Walks have raised over £1,000,000 – this has paid for more than 2,500 days of care on our In-Patient unit. Today we look after more patients in the comfort of

Events

their own homes than in the Hospice itself, this kind of care costs just £138 per patient per day.

We know that it can be difficult to ask friends and family for sponsorship year after year. One way round this is to ask for small donations, or, if you’d rather not raise sponsorship at all, you can make a £25 donation along with your registration fee.

You can now also choose to do a shorter six-mile route, instead of the full 13 miles, if like some of us, you need to get a least a few hours of beauty sleep.

However you do it and whatever you raise, every penny makes a difference!

Enter now online www.themartlets.org.uk/midnight

Stars needed ! Would you like to be a Midnight Walk Star? Could you persuade 5 other women to sign up? We will give you everything you need and your own Midnight Walk sweatshirt. Contact Ruth – [email protected] – to find out more.

Join us for a night to remember! Take part in the Midnight Walk and help us

look after families when they need us most.

Small and quirky or big and rambling, whatever kind of garden you have, could you welcome visitors in this summer and raise funds for the Martlets? You choose the date and we’ll help with the organisation and the publicity.

Last year’s open gardens raised nearly £7,000 for the Hospice, and we’re asking local gardeners to help us raise even more in 2014.

To register your garden or simply for more information contact Antonia in the Fundraising Office on 01273 747455 or email [email protected]

Parachute for PatientsA number of adventurous supporters have already signed up to take a tandem jump from 12,000 feet at our next Parachute for Patients event on 11th May. Organised by Skydive Headcorn, the popular event is now in its 9th year.

The day includes training and the exhilarating experience of a 30-40 seconds freefall before your highly experienced instructor opens the chute and you drift down over the Kent countryside.

To take part you need to pledge to raise at least £395 in sponsorship. Places are limited, so book early, and by Friday 14th March at the latest. For more info, email [email protected] or call 01273 747455.

Walk to rememberJoin us on Sunday 16th March to remember someone who was special to you. Our sponsored Walk to Remember along Hove seafront is for everyone, from children to grandparents. The event starts at Hove Lawns Café and you can follow a 3, 5 or 12-mile route. We encourage you to bring a photo of your loved one, or to complete a dedication card to add to the Martlets memory wall at the start of the walk.

Entry is just £10 for adults and £5 for under-16s. To sign up, go to www.themartlets.org.uk/walk, call 01273 964200 or email [email protected].

Pooches on the promAnyone walking along the Brighton and Hove seafront on the morning of 19th January may have been slightly surprised by the sea of dogs rather than the crashing waves.

Almost 200 dogs (and their owners) took part in this, our first ever Pooches on the Prom event. Our canine friends raised over £10,000 with their efforts.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes (and a number of eye-catching outfits)

followed in the paw prints of walk leader Buster Blass, a one-eyed King Charles Spaniel. Depending on how energetic they were feeling, dogs chose to stroll either to Brighton Pier or to Madeira drive and back.

Entry to the sponsored walk was just £5 per pooch, and everyone went home with a doggy treat and a medal. All of the money raised by the Hospice’s furry friends will go towards funding our vital services.

Respite serviceSpeaking the same language Alma believes it’s easy to write people off when they have dementia, to think because they don’t seem to recognise you they can’t communicate. But she knows that isn’t the case.

Mary, Alma’s mum has lost the ability to speak English because of her dementia. She can now only speak Spanish. Mary is cared for once a week by the Martlets Respite Service. All carers from the service are carefully matched to their patients and families, and Mary’s family felt strongly that having a native Spanish-speaking carer was vital for her wellbeing.

Alma explained, “Since Yamila has been visiting Mum she’s started to communicate again and she’s full of life. I know she looks forward to her coming. Yamila

cares for Mum with patience, complete dedication and kindness. I’m sure that this is what’s really helped her come out of herself again. ”

“Mum is still Mum, she understands what we say to her. My Mum has always been very feisty; our home has always been full of life, loud and vibrant. We’re still like that, Mum needs that, it’s what she’s always known and loved.”

Mary’s husband Ian is her main carer. With Yamila’s weekly visits he’s able to pop out to the shops or the pub – things he can’t do while he’s looking after Mary. He told us how much Mary needs the familiarity of home, how happy it makes her. He goes on to explain how Yamila has helped his wife.

“When Yamila first visited us Mary had had a bad fall and had lost her mobility and confidence. Yamila gradually built her confidence up. Today she can walk all the way to the beach. It might take a long time to get there and lots of patience, but Yamila understands how important it is for Mary.”

It’s thanks to support from people like you that Mary and her family are cared for by the Martlets Respite Service. The Respite team made 132 visits last month. This specialist service is unique in the city, and in great demand. All the carers working in the Respite service are from the team at Martlets Care. Complementary therapies at the Martlets

Arts and crafts volunteers

As you’ll probably know, complementary therapies can have a relaxing and calming effect, helping to ease anxiety and enhance feelings of well-being. In January this year we launched our new complementary therapies service, initially it’s running on the In-Patient Unit, but later in the year we’ll be expanding it so the service is available to patients and their carers living in the community. The therapies are provided by professional therapists working as volunteers and patients can chose from a ‘very light touch’ massage or reflexology.

Sarah and Maureen volunteer on the In-Patient Unit helping hospice patients and their families to enjoy being creative.

“Each morning we go round and talk to the patients. We’ll bring them along to the Activity Room if they’re well enough.” Maureen told us.

Sarah explained how patients often feel a bit wary to start with: “You usually hear ‘I’m not artistic’ or ‘I don’t enjoy that kind of thing’. That’s why it’s useful to take something

simple with us and once they get stuck into it they really enjoy it. We’ve learned how important it is to make things achievable in a short space of time.”

Maureen was inspired to volunteer after the help she received from the Martlets when her husband died. If you’d like to volunteer at the Martlets contact our Volunteer Co-ordinators Alison and Philippa on [email protected] or call 01273 273400.

On the In-Patient Unit we offer therapy over three afternoons a week. With five therapists we’re able to give 28 30-minute massage or reflexology sessions a week.

The feedback from our patients has been excellent. One of our patients who had a hand and feet massage told us “it was very relaxing…it relaxed the tension in my feet substantially and I slept for an hour and a half afterwards.’

Following the pilot, our aim is to expand the service, so that we can offer therapies every afternoon of the week in IPU and as part of our day services.

Last year, thanks to your

donations…

Every donation we receive is important, but a regular monthly donation direct from your bank account is particularly helpful as it allows us to plan better for the future and make the best use of our resources.

Sam Ghibaldan tells why she donates in this way: “Dot was my neighbour and over time became a surrogate grandmother. She was such fun with a fantastic zest for life. I loved pottering around our gardens together and drinking copious cups of tea. Even when she became poorly she still had her good humour and always looked her best.

Sadly Dot was diagnosed with cancer. She was admitted to Martlets

and I just couldn’t believe how amazing it was there. From the caring and peaceful environment to the dignified personal care – it was exceptional. Knowing Dot’s appearance was important to her the nurses ensured her hair was done and nails painted, which really cheered her up. She even had her CD player, singing along to treasured old tunes. Dot died in the Martlets in peace, with dignity and without pain – her death as good as it could be.

Sam and her husband give a monthly donation to charities dear to them and when choosing a local charity for Sam there was only one option.

Our stories

“The thought of not having Martlets for people when they need end-of-life care is inconceivable to me. I’ve seen first hand the huge difference it makes to patients and their families and I know the money is very well spent. Setting up a standing order was easy and we honestly don’t miss the monthly donation. And with gift aid it’s also tax efficient. It’s a small price to pay to thank Martlets for all they did for Dot.”
