MARY & DICK ALLEN DIABETES CENTER

The Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center is located at Hoag Health Center-Newport Beach, adjacent to Hoag Hospital’s Newport Beach campus. Specialized programs focus on meeting the challenges of diabetes care by providing comprehensive services and support that reflect the diversity in the community. The Allen Diabetes Center also offers educational programs and support services designed specifically to meet the needs of patients with diabetes and their families. All professional educational programs of the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center are supported through major grants from Cindy and Mike McKee, the Fletcher Jones Foundation of Los Angeles, community support provided through Hoag Hospital Foundation, and the Hoag Community Benefit Program.

PROGRAM OVERVIEWThe Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center presents its annual conference on diabetes. This knowledge-based, one-day conference will include topics on emerging adults with type 1 diabetes, clinical management of pregnancy and diabetes, strategies to manage diabetes in older adults, culturally sensitive nutrition recommendations to enhance diabetes care, the significance of the coordination from inpatient to outpatient care, and effective community-based approaches to involve and effectively manage high-risk groups.

WHO SHOULD ATTENDThis is a knowledge-based activity designed for diabetes educators, including physicians, registered nurses, registered dietitians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other health care providers interested in staying up to date on current practices of care for their patients with diabetes and other related conditions.

LEARNING OUTCOMEFrom this program, participants will consider designing unique programs for young adults with type 1 diabetes, recognize effective options in managing diabetes during pregnancy, demonstrate skills in implementing comprehensive care for geriatric populations, utilize culturally sensitive nutritional counseling for patients with diabetes, identify opportunities to improve coordination of care from inpatient to outpatient facilities, and implement effective community-based programs to optimize diabetes care.

AADE ACCREDITATION

This continuing nursing education activity was approved by The American Association of Diabetes Educators, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This program 2017-057 is awarded 6.5 contact hours of continuing education credit.The AADE is also accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CEP#10977).

The American Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program provides 6.5 contact hours (0.65 CEU’s) of continuing education credit. ACPE Universal Activity Number: 0069-0000-17-333-L01-P.

Certified Diabetes Educators: To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators (NCBDE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the NCBDE list of Approved Providers (www.ncbde.org). NCBDE does not approve continuing education. The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) is on the NCBDE list of Approved Providers.

REGISTERED DIETITIAN ACCREDITATIONThe Commission on Dietetic Registration is the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Registered dietitians and registered dietetic technicians will receive 6.5 continuing education units for completion of the program, “Diabetes: What’s New? What’s Next?” (Activity #135858).

DESIGNATIONHoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 8.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM. Physicians should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This credit can apply to the CMA Certification of Continuing Medical Education.

ACCREDITATIONHoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian is accredited by the Institute for the Medical Quality/California Medical Association (IMQ/CMA) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
