GLORIA Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty, From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Following the very positive comments I have received after our recent Transitus Prayer on the feast of St Francis using Taize style Prayer, I have decided to trial 2 evenings before the end of year using aTaize Prayer formula. The services use sung repetitive chants often in an environment of peace, and traditionally have included praying around a prayer focus with many candles. One of the most important aspects of the prayer is silent prayer.

History of Taizé: These prayer services emerged from an ecumenical community of monks in Taizé, France. Brother Roger, Taize's founder, arrived in the village of Taizé, France in 1940. In the midst of World War II, he dreamed of creating a community where reconciliation was a daily reality. He began by giving shelter to refugees of the war, especially Jews. Initially, Br Roger lived alone, until brothers from various Protestant and Roman Catholic backgrounds followed.

In the 1960’s many young people began to hear about this small community in France and since then it has become a place of pilgrimage for many young (and not so young) people who are searching for peace and reconciliation. Today people from around the world, come to Taizé looking for meaning in their lives and to try and understand their journey of faith through prayer, stillness and the discussion groups.

Taize Music: As the community grew and people from many countries came to visit Taize the few brothers there we trying to find a common way of prayer that all people could take part in. They found that the simple chants and silence, were an easy way to lead people to a deeper relationship with God. The original chants for Taize date back the 1960s when Jacques Berthier a young French composer was asked to write some music for the community and visitors. When I first joined the friars in Auckland, we began monthly prayer evenings using the Taize style and these proved very popular amongst the local community. Up until the time I moved to Australia I was involved in leading these evenings of prayer for over 15years. I was fortunate to visit Taize in 2012 and today still find this style of prayer a wonderful way to truly spend time with God.

I invite you to come along on Wednesday November 21st at 7.30 for an hour of Taize prayer in our church. I promise you it will bring new energy and blessings to your life with God. Fr Bernie

TAIZE PRAYER AT MARY IMMACULATE CHURCH

JOY OF COMITTMENT - Heavenly Father, We know that all things worthwhile require courage and perseverance. Fill us with the strength we need to fulfil our vocations with all the commitment they entail. Help us to honour our promises to one another faithfully through good times and bad. May we embody the humility and holiness of Jesus, especially in the presence of those who need us the most.

MONTH OF PRAYER FOR MARRIAGE & FAMILIES This scene from the gospel is very easy to picture in our minds. A blind beggar sits

in the dusty gutter in his despair and abandonment. Most people would look the other way and ignore him. To be afflicted in such a way was seen to be a result of sinfulness. But Bartimaeus hears the noise of the crowd and tunes in. No doubt, in the commotion, he hears others saying that it is Jesus of Nazareth who approaches. The cry of Bartimaeus is very instructive, ‘Son of David, have pity on me’. Not only does the blind man recognise who Jesus is, but what he can do. He is the Messiah, therefore he can make the blind see. Jesus responds with a classic invitation to discipleship, ‘Call him here’. In response to this call to come to Jesus, Bartimaeus leaves behind what is probably his only possession (in contrast to the rich young man), his cloak, and presents himself in his nothingness, ready to be filled with all that Jesus can offer. His faith, his receptivity and his response to the invitation are rewarded. His sight restored, he follows Jesus along the road. What a profound lesson there is to be learned from Bartimaeus.

EXPLORING THE WORD

• The title ‘Son of David’ was one applied to the longed-for anointed one of God. Its use here indicates that Bartimaeus has recognised Jesus as the Messiah.

• The ‘blind faith’ of Bartimaeus contrasts sharply with the lack of insight and understanding we have witnessed from the disciples in recent weeks.

• Jericho is the main town on the west bank of the Jordan River in the south. It was the crossing point for people journeying from the north and led to the main road up to Jerusalem, 22 kilometres away. Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem, and to his death, has almost ended.
