Thoughts from your President
Hello everyone. I hope you are enjoying your summer. The weather has been a real bummer when it comes to our cruise nights at Dairy Queen. We currently are good for one successful cruise at that location, all others have been rained out. I went to Gary Lee’s car show. Not as large a turnout as last year’s show, but a nice show nonetheless. Rich Heater took home a trophy for best truck. Congratulations Rich. Agnes and Jackie scored on the Tricky Tray table. (continued next page)
Coming up the last weekend in July, the property of Mr. Bulgari will be open to the public for a special car show, highlighting the Buick brand. This is a special opportunity to view some very special automobiles from not only his collection, but from around the country as well. Check your paper for the dates and times Rachael Flynn from Hagerty insurance also contacted me looking for some kids who would be interested in learning how to judge a car at a show. They are also looking for some older kids to participate in the barn learning about the mechanical side of things. In August we are looking for some vehicles from the 70’s and 80’s to be in a movie along with people to fill in as extras on the set. Contact Dave Oravec for info. 610-253-5097 Looking ahead we have the Halloween Cruise as well as the dinner/dance, and since we are just about halfway through the cruise night season we have elections coming up. If you are reading this newsletter I would like to encourage you to attend our next business meeting. I want to hear what you have to say about the club. What are we doing right? What are we doing wrong? What can we do differently? I look forward to seeing all of you. Alan

REPORT ON THE FAMILY PICNIC On Sunday July 3, the Lehigh Valley Region AACA held its 58th Annual Picnic. We had a great time with Bob and Trudy Frey, John and Karan Mitzak, Ed and Alice Dietrich their daughter Carol and granddaughter Mary Catherine, Joe Bichler and new members Joe and Ginny Bichler, Mary Jane and Joe Pokojni, and daughter and son-in-law Dave and Cindy Oravec. It was a four family picnic. I think this is the last picnic for our club due to lack of interest. It is a lot of work for a picnic that could have been a lot easier to do at home. This was voted on at the meeting and a lot of hands went up but the attendance was low. Check out the picture of the picnic on facebook follow the link below.

Fred Antunes and his 1929 Franklin took me down to the Quakertown Car Show. (one hot park), but with 350 cars and lots of shade I had a good time. About 50%
stock and 50% Antiques made for a good show. There were two Model T Fords there and they caught my eye of course. A blue 1912 two seater Torpedo Roadster and a black original Model T Touring Car which , as it turned out, had belonged to Luther Gherig. Luther had been in World War II and when he got out of the service he found and bought a nice 20 year old Chevy that had been in storage. He took his girlfriend to the “Great Allenton Fair”. The guy at the gate asked, “are you with the car show? It is free”. Of course Luther said “yep” and was then into the old car hobby. Luther heard about an old Ford stored in the living room of an old house somewhere at the base of the Blue Mountains. Luther hunted it down and tried to buy it. He spoke Pennsylvania Dutch (as did a lot of members of our club back in the 1950’s) 1 and wanted to buy it from the old couple to no avail. After a number of visits and lots of laughs together in the dialect, the old folks decided to sell it to Luther. The old stone farm house was built into the side of a hill and the 1914 Ford was in the living room which was on the second floor. 2 They removed a portion of wooden framing, pushed the car outside and started it up. They replaced the woodwork, Luther paid for it and had lots of fun with it over the years. The car was and is in perfect shape with only an inch hole worn in the front seat. Luther’s son didn’t want that old thing and so it disappeared from the Lehigh Valley and from my memory and it was like finding and old friend. But here it was in all of it’s original glory with it’s proud new owner. Luther was an active member of the Lehigh Valley Region for years and he and I always sought each other out at meets and swapped story’s. Finding his 102 year old car was a nice reminder of a great friend. Bob Frey July 15, 2016

2 That’s the way my grandparents home was with the living room and parlor upstairs and the kitchen and sitting room down stairs, as was the cold cellar with it’s dirt floor below ground level.
