President’s Message Welcome to Fall! That time of year where we clean up our yard and get ready to make a bigger mess in our quilt rooms! The Service Committee wants to help fill your quilt room with a project and is looking for help in finishing twin size quilts. There are about 150 tops ready to be quilted. They will layer and pin it for you. Can you commit to quilting at least one? Would a demo on how to set up your machine to quilt this size quilt help you? Beginning machine quilters welcome. Let Lynn Grube or Lisa know. We are still looking for people to chair the Quilts in the Garden event tentatively scheduled for 2021. Spring is the time to select the gardens and encourage garden hosts. There have been a few people willing to work on parts of the QNG and members always are ready to help the day of the event. The support is there for you to coordinate and run with it. We need commitment by March 2020 or this event will not happen. The alternative is to find another fundraiser to help fund the Guild’s activities. We are currently digging into our savings to fund about a third of our expenses and this can only go on for another year or two. One way or the other, we will need volunteers to help raise funds or dues will have to increase. It is election time and ballots will be handed out at the next meeting. Please remember to thank Sandy Millet for being Secretary for these past two years. This guild would not run without the dedicated volunteers we have. November is our last meeting of the year. Membership Renewal

It is time to renew your membership in Marys River Quilt Guild for 2020. We ask all members, even if you

have reached our ‘distinguished’ member group to fill out an application annually so we can make sure we have

the most current information for you. Just a reminder – our membership dues are a large part of our budget and

you are always welcome to round up your check or cash and make a donation to the guild. Since we are a

nonprofit, your donation is tax deductible. I will gladly collect your dues starting at the November

meeting. The membership form can be found on our website and I will have some at the meeting.

It’s time to start thinking about Round Robin for 2020!

The deadline for participation is rapidly approaching. You may sign up via clipboard at the

November guild meeting or by calling Cindy Graff at home (541-758-7040) before December

31st. After a kick-off social in January, meetings happen once every two months from February

to August. If you would like more information about joining the group, please ask! There is also

an FAQ handout available with the clipboard. We would love to have you join!

Cindy Graff, Round Robin Chair

MRQG Service Committee is excited about this year’s silent auction with many unused and

slightly used fantastic quilt related items that could be yours!! Who needs Black Friday when we

have Blue Thursday at the next guild meeting on Thursday, November 21. Come early, since

there is sooooo much stuff to bid on and purchase! And you won’t go broke saving money.

Hello from the MRQG Hospitality Committee

Our responsibility is to greet everyone at the door, especially guests, and we'll be more diligent in

the future in getting guests' email addresses so we can stay in contact and perhaps increase the

Guild membership.

In addition, we will continue to host a New Members Reception in May, where everyone who has

joined the Guild since the previous reception will be introduced to Board Members and

Committee Chairs. If anyone has suggestions to help improve that event, please feel free to share

them with us.

Perhaps the biggest change we'll all see in the coming year will be, of course, in how we all do

our shopping at quilt shops. Up until now, most of the gift cards our committee has given out as

door prizes at each meeting have been from local, Corvallis/Philomath quilt shops.

In 2020 that will no longer be an option. Our Guild most definitely wants to continue to support

independent quilt shops in our area, so we'll be giving out gift cards from a variety of shops. How

far will our membership want to travel to shop? Are there any shops in this area of the state that

you are particularly interested in visiting, a shop that you would be more likely to visit if you had a

gift card to that shop? Please let us know.

We hope you have enjoyed the efforts of our committee this year as much as we have, and welcome

any suggestions from all of you.

Barbara Gordon and Izzie Elliott, Hospitality Co-Chairs

So, you say, what is this group? Some sort of secret clan that gives presents? No, not at all. Secret Sisters is a subgroup of MRQG and our foremost objective is to create quilting friendships. There are all kinds of activities to promote this objective, that includes games, appreciation of each others quilting skills, and each others talents and accomplishments - just getting to know about one another, our families and other interests that have nothing to do with quilting! We acknowledge birthdays, encourage finishing of UFO’s (a project begun over 2 years ago), appreciate current quilting projects, and share stories and enjoy a bite to eat. Secret Sisters share concerns and condolences when sickness and sadness occurs in our families. Our meetings are usually held in a member’s home. Last year our gatherings included an evening of Bunco, a dime auction of unwanted and unfinished projects, a white elephant exchange, a day of sewing, a picnic at Avery Park, dinner out before Guild, and a Fall/Halloween party and a Christmas gathering! So, you wonder, why are we called “Secret” Sisters? Well, each January members are given the name and info about one of the other members ... but “sshhhhh - whose name you were given is a secret! Your job is to send them greetings on holidays, acknowledge their birthday, perhaps bringing a surprise gift for them to our meeting, sort of just make their day a bit special. And, all the time, not letting them know who you are! Then at our December party, we reveal (guess) who that Secret Sister was! Sound like fun? Then come join us! You will find the application form on the website under the section titled “Secret Sisters”. Fill it out and send to Jan Andrews, 2800 NW 29th street, #8, Corvallis by January 10. The first meeting for 2020 will be the 3rd Thursday evening of January 16 at 7pm at Jan’s house.

Forms will also be available at the November meeting.

Jan Andrews, Secret Sisters Chair
