Marylebone History

Historically, the parish of St. Marys, from which Marylebones name

derives, covered the area comprised between Oxford Street, Regents

Park and St. Johns Wood. Today, the two areas tend to be regarded as

separate, with Marylebone bounded by Oxford Street to the south,

Marylebone Road to the north, Edgware Road to the west and Great

Portland Street to the east.

Marylebone has been developed starting with the 18th century, by two

major landowners. The Portman estate, covering most of the area west

of Baker Street, still features today the wide roads and elegant squares

it was originally designed with by Henry Portman. Manchester square,

Portman square and Village are among the highlights of the estate, with

a lot of the magnificent Georgian buildings being restored and many

streets landscaped and pedestrianised.

The Howard de Walden estate, covering the area east of Baker Street,
