Volunteers Honored at Annual Dinner Event In 2017, more than 900 volunteers served 36,000 hours to help 16,048 families put food on the table, up 9.5% from 2016. Nearly 1.3 million pounds of donated food came into the Food Bank and went out again with grateful clients. V o l u n t e e r s i n t h e S p o t l i g h t We thank all our volunteers, whose hard work and dedication allow us to serve our community. Here are our recent Volunteers of the Month!

January: Helena & Richard Dsouza

As retirees, Richard and Helena Dsouza decided to work for the Lord instead of for a paycheck. Through St. Mary's Catholic Church, they found their way to MCFB in October 2017. And work they do, giving four days every week! Helena helps clients make selections and Richard escorts them out to their cars on distribution days. On Saturday mornings they help sort and store canned and packaged foods. Richard and Helena came here from Kuwait in 2013, a year after they retired from Kuwait National Museum where he was senior coordinator and office manager of operations and she was cultural programmer. They have a son who works at Boeing and a daughter living in Kuwait. In their free time, Richard enjoys reading, writing, repairing motorcycles and carpentry. Helena enjoys drawing, painting, home decorating and makeup artistry. Thank you, Richard and Helena, for caring enough to share your love and time at the MCFB.

February: Dan Grumbach Dan 'Grumpy' Grum-bach has volunteered at the Food Bank for seven years. Retired from the Navy in 2009, he had time and energy to spare. He found both were

needed here! Every Monday he picks up grocery rescue foods at Walmart. On Wednesdays he sets up for Food for Thought and on Thursdays he helps assemble Food for Thought packs, then delivers them to two or three schools. As if that weren't enough, he also delivers donated clothing to St. Joseph House, formula and infant diapers to Pregnancy Aid, and mattresses to Interfaith Agency of Snohomish County. Dan is commander for Marysville's American Legion, helping veterans help veterans. He keeps his lawn and vegetable garden going and both he and his wife, Pam, enjoy reading and attending high school sporting events. They have a son and granddaughter living in Alabama and a daughter and grandson in Lake Stevens. Although he's been called Grumpy since he was 5 years old, he's actually far from it — making everyone's day a little brighter! Thank you, Dan, for sharing your 'grumpiness' with us!

March: Norma Wright Almost four years ago Norma Wright's son Michael sug-gested she volunteer at the MCFB. He was volunteering here as part of his coursework at Ever-

ett Community College and loved it. He knew she would, too. Norma serves as 'Bread Lady' every Tuesday. Retired from hair styling in Columbus, Ohio, Norma is mom to Michael and four other children, and grandma to three. She enjoys reading and hiking. She especially enjoyed hiking Bandera Mountain in the Cascades and the Wonderland Trail on Mt. Rainier last summer. Norma says she receives more than she gives at the Food Bank, enjoying clients' life stories and lessons, their hopeful attitude, their gratitude and even their creative recipes. She feels particularly

blessed by the children who call her Gramma Norma! Thank you, Norma, for blessing MCFB with your service!

April: Joe Murray Joe Murray has been volunteering for seven months thanks to volunteers Karen Lee and his wife Marcia who told him we could use his help. Since then he's been here

faithfully three days a week helping unload deliveries in the warehouse plus any other tasks needing done. Joe retired eight years ago as an electrician and maintenance man for Seattle Snohomish Mill Company. He and Marcia have two sons, one a maintenance supervisor at the Bellevue Coca-Cola plant and the other a coach with the Portland Timbers who has two daughters. Joe says helping at the Food Bank is "kinda fun!" If that's what he calls his hard work and dedication, we couldn't be more pleased! Thank you, Joe!

Congratulations to Rick Hoover 2017 Volunteer of the Year!

When Rick Hoover retired, he looked for a rewarding act-ivity and a way to get some exercise. He found both at the MCFB. His fellow volunteers are what have kept him here for the

past five years and they over-whelmingly voted him Volunteer of the Year. They know first-hand just how valuable he is as warehouse manager. Not only does he get the job done, but he does it with an upbeat attitude and a great sense of humor. In his free time, he likes to golf, golf, golf! He and wife Leslee have a son, a daughter and seven grandchildren. Congratulations, Rick, for an honor well deserved!

WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER E pluribus unum. Recognize that? That Latin phrase is stamped on each coin minted in the United States of America. What does it mean? "Out of many, one." The

meaning of the phrase originates from the concept that out of the union of the original thirteen colonies emerged a new single nation. From this union came strength in unity that

eventually grew to 50 states. When I think of our community

and how strong it is, I think of our nation's wonderful motto. We are many people. And we come together because it makes us one and it makes us stronger. All of us are better for it. The Marysville Community Food Bank is a good representation of this. We come together as people wanting to help or needing help and we stand stronger than we were as individuals.

Congratulations to... Amy Howell received the Governor's Volunteer Service Award on April 9 at the Governor's Mansion, for her dedication to building and maintaining Food for Thought, a program that provides schoolchildren—who might otherwise go hungry—with food for the weekend. The program has grown in six years from 18 Liberty Elementary students to over 600 students at 23 schools in Marysville and Lakewood. We are proud of you, Amy!

In Loving Memory: Charlie Forbes We were saddened to hear of the passing of Charlie Forbes on October 11, 2017. A very dear man, Charlie volunteered for 12 years, including several years on the board, retiring in 2012. Prior to that, he had been an Episcopal priest serving most recently at St. Philip's in Marysville. Preceded in death by two sons, he leaves behind his wife Carolyn and a daughter, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His kind and generous spirit, his upbeat attitude and his ready laugh will be sorely missed!

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner Thanks! Our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner was a huge success thanks to dozens of amazing volunteers! The event was organized and expertly orchestrated by Tara Mizell. Assisting Tara were Alonna Chatburn, James Davis, Goldie Fox and Sherry Haigh on setup; Rev. Greg and Sharon Kanehen; NJROTC students Justin Imadhay, Kaitlyn Norris, Eleanor Wilde and Tori Wilde; Key Club students Benicio Rivera and Cristina Velasco; and Rotaract Club of Snohomish County members Morgan Crosby, Alec Linse and Payton Steel who helped serve and clean up. Alonna Chatburn created photo collage placemats and lovely floral centerpieces were done by Dorothy Elliott. Photos were taken by Amy Howell. A variety of door prizes were provided by the board members plus donations from Costco, Bonefish and Outback Restaurants. Musical entertainment was provided by the 'New Day-Old Breadcrumbs' JoAnn Sewell and Robyn Woods. Finally, thanks to Marysville United Methodist Church for the lovely facility.
