MAS News MAS Conference and AGMPlan to attend MAS’s conference and annual general meeting, to be held on May 31 to June 2 in Melfort. This year’s conference theme is Museums in a Technological World, but you don’t have to be a techno-whiz to attend. Watch for more details.

Member SurveyMAS will soon be conducting a comprehensive survey of member museums. A lot has happened in the decade since our last member survey, and we need a better understanding of the state of museums in Saskatchewan today.

The survey will be conducted on-line only. Each member will be assigned a Personal Access Code (PIN) which will allow you to complete the survey over more than one session. Members who are unable to access a computer to complete the survey can contact MAS for assistance. Please complete the survey: a better understanding of the state of Saskatchewan’s museums will help us serve you better.

New look for E-phemera NewsletterWe’re working on some improvements to our e-phemera newsletter to make it more accessible and visually appealing. As part of this process, we’ll be updating our mailing list. We’ll be sending each e-phemera

subscriber an email notice asking you to confirm your address. This will allow us to remove inactive addresses from our list, and keep us in compliance with anti-spam email regulations. If you have any questions, or want to be added to the e-phemera news list, please contact Ele at 780-9279, or by email at [email protected].

E-learning UpdateWe’re excited to announce that we’re on target to launch our online Museums 101 course this spring! Stay tuned for details. (For those who prefer an in-person course, we’ll also offer an in-person course on March 9 at Wanuskewin Heritage Park. For more information, see the Events Calendar on page 8.)

From Idea to Exhibit and Beyond

From Idea to Exhibit and BeyondExploring collaborative exhibit and program development

Even when we’re wearing more than one hat – when our exhibit designer, our programmer, and our

communications departments are all the same person – it’s easy to treat exhibit design, programming, and communications as distinct activities. One day we’ll be working on a display, the next we’ll be planning a summer program, the next, writing copy for a website or brochure. When we’ve got separate people working on each tasks, it’s even easier to lose sight of the connections between them.

But there are connections, and keeping them in mind can help our museums work better. That’s why we’re offering From Idea to Exhibit and Beyond, a workshop that looks at collaborative exhibit and program development. In this interactive, fast-paced one-day workshop, explore how curators, exhibit developers and museum educators can work together to create exhibits and programs that engage visitors. We’ll talk about collaborative exhibit development, hands-on interactives in the space, using social media to extend an experience, and planning for school and public programs within the context of an exhibition. <<

What is a Webinar?A webinar is a web-delivered seminar that you can attend from your own internet-connected computer. It allows people scattered over a large area to participate without the trouble and expense of traveling. Even if you don’t have internet access, ask about public internet access at your local library or school.

You will be able to register and watch the webinars online at http://learningtimesevents.org/engagingtech/. We strongly recommend that you use a high-speed internet connection. There will be a $25 fee for each webinar, or you can register in all four for only $75. Watch for announcements in our E-phemera newsletter.

Your computer will need:>> A high-speed internet connection>> Speakers>> An up-to-date browser with Java Web Start installed>> A microphone is optional, but recommended

Low Cost, High Tech

From electronics to social media, technology is getting cheaper and easier to use than ever before. With this webinar series, MAS is helping you develop the skills and knowledge to make the most of

these new tools.

Session topics include:>> Social Media and Museums (February 15)>> Build Your Own Interactive Whiteboard on a Budget (March 1)>> Augment Your Reality: Computing and Interactive Exhibits (March 13)>> Do-It-Yourself Electronics (March 28)

The seminars are web-delivered, which means that you can participate from any computer with a high-speed internet connection. We’re also planning a face-to-face workshop that will give you the chance to check this stuff out firsthand; stay tuned for details.

New technology is creating exciting, low-cost possibilities for museums: new communication tools that are free and easy to use; new kinds of low-cost electronics and interactives. Join us for the skills and knowledge you need to do it yourself! <<

Active Prolonged EngagementResearcher and science educator Sue Allen knows how to be engaging

We all want to make our museums more engaging to visitors, but not many of us have the resources to carry out four years

of in-depth research about how to do it.

Sue Allen was part of a team that looked at how to get visitors to spend quality time in the museum. Their aim was “active prolonged engagement” (APE): getting visitors to interact longer and more thoughtfully with museum exhibits.

APE exhibits are hands-on, but they’re also something more. While most traditional hands-on exhibits tell visitors what to do and then tell them what they’ve learned, APE exhibits encourage visitors to experiment and reach their own conclusions.

The Exploratorium, where this research was carried out, is a major science centre in San Francisco. It’s known for pioneering the idea of interactive science learning. It’s also a leader in visitor studies research, with a whole department devoted to visitor research and evaluation.

Of course, most of us can’t carry out that kind of research in our own museums, but we can learn what their researchers have found, and how we might apply it to our own work. In this workshop, you’ll find out:

>> What did the research discover? >> What types of APE exhibits are there? >> How did researchers use video to analyze visitor engagement?>> How can our museums make use of Sue’s findings?

So come join us for what promises to be a useful, surprising, and engaging workshop with Sue Allen on March 14. <<
