Luke Donohoe-Denton, the fresh new urban designer, has created a quirky, unique label called, Death By Cutie. Launching his first exclusive line only last January 2010, he emphasizes individuality with his iconographic limited edition prints on American Apparel tees, hoodies and vests. Sold widely online and through concessions in stores in Sheffield and Leeds available at Kuji shop and Each To Their Own.Based in Sheffield he has built a loyal following with his fresh and quirky style and counts fashionistas like boy band, JLS among his many fans. The name of the label was a quick decision and with his creative background, he decided to combine the words ‘death’ and ‘cute’ together to create a unique name for his brand. So I bet your wondering, ‘What’s with the paper bags?’ He uses bags to remove the identity of the models and create a focus on the clothing and not who’s wearing it. After all it is about the clothing, which he describes his designs as ‘images turned awol.’ Luke loves controversy in his photography and designs and manipulates images using different Photoshop techniques. Before Death By Cutie he started working alongside a close friend on another label, realizing he could move forward with his own designs and do it better himself, he took inspiration from this experience and set up his own label. Lacking funding for such a big idea, he luckily was approached by an investor who supplied him with the base products to set him on his way.Death By Cutie has recently been spotted on celebrity juice. Fearne Cotton and Keith Lemons were supplied with the clothing and were seen wearing it on the television show. B Box Fozzy, the number 1 beat boxer in the UK, who supports Dizzee Rascal on tour has also recently done a photo shoot sporting the BMX baghead t-shirt, whilst sat on a BMX. He has secured exclusive sponsorship with some of the best known international dj’s around the world, such as the DC10 dj’s

I’ve got a bag on my head t-shirt £35.00

from Switzerland and Barcelona, Vincent Abbo and Mirus Lowe, who were seen wearing the t-shirts whilst playing a live set to thousands of screaming fans in the Ibiza club. Death By Cutie designs are shaking up fashion, now being recognized as a de-sign heavy weight, expanding from online to store concessions around the Yorkshire area.

ONE NIGHT ONLYJACK SAILS

Signed at the age of 16, Jack Sails thesongwriter and keys player for One Night Only joined Masc for an

exclusive interview. He takes us back to how the band first formed, their highlights and

challenges, working with Emma Watson and the bands fashion style.

Meeting on a quiet Friday afternoon in a small bar hidden down the shambles of York, just 20 minutes outside of Helmsley where the band all grew up. Jack rocked up in a Beetles t-shirt from Topman,

Levis jeans and a Vintage chunky knit red cardigan.

Why the name One Night Only? When we had our first gig about 5 yars ago we were about to go on and the band didn’t have a name so the guy that was running the night said, “alright, well for this gig u can be called ‘One Night Only’ there we go, on you go”Ok so we’re One Night Only, we always planned to get another name but it kind of just stuck.

When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?I wasn’t in the original band, it started in 2003 and I joined in 2005.

What genre of music do you consider your work to be? To start with, I guess something to do. We were all like 13 to 15, it wasn’t to make anything of anything it was just some-thing to keep us busy.

Did you think you would get this far?Never, not in a million years. We knew ‘Just for tonight’ was a good song when we wrote it but we were just like, oh it’s a cool song, that’s the one we can play at the end of a st, but never did we imagine anything like this.

Who writes the music? It’s all of us, we all write together. I mean people have different tasks that they contribute towards when we’re writing, but its everyone all in it together really.

How long have you all known each other? We all went to school together, and we all live with in a few miles of each other and we all went to the same secondary school too.

What genre of music do you consider your work to be?I’d say its like big pop tunes but with a rock outfit. (laughs)

Do you have any major influences? Its quite diverse, we have so many different things that we all take influences from, but I would say some of the main ones are The Killers, which is an obvious one. I think a lot of people can hear that in our sound. Also bands like Arcade Fire, 60’s rock and roll music and I like quite a lot of electronic stuff.

Which video did you enjoy making the most? Say you don’t want it, definitely!

How was NY and working with Emma Watson? New York was amazing - the video is focused around places out of the centre of the city so we got to get a taste of the real NYC, not just the tourist sights. And the view of Manhat-tan from the rooftop was incredible!!

Emma was amazing to work with, really open and friendly. She had obviously done shoots far longer than ours before, we were all collapsing and she was still up and ready to go.

How did the acoustic version of Chemestry come about for the Burberry Acoustic? Burberry have recently set up an online series called Burberry Acoustic with an online blog called Watch Listen Tell. Chris-topher Bailey has got us involved with many of Burberry’s events and when they asked us to get involved with this we were really happy to be asked.

27

Why is it just you and George in the video?George and I usually do the acoustic performances because it’s much more effective to completely break those things down and give the music a bit more air and thoughtfulness. Heavy right?

What is your favorite place where you have performed?London Astoria. We were one of the last bands to ever play there before it was knocked down and it was one of our big-gest sell out shows to date.

Worst place? Again, knocked down now but The Charlotte in Leicester was completely horrible. Smelly and nothing really worked properly.

How long has it taken you to make the second album?Nearly 2 years.

you ever crowd surfed at a gig?Well, I would love to but I always get this horrible feeling that if I decided one day to jump into the crowd, they would all just move out the way and I would fall flat on my face (laughs) George does it every time we perform without fail! After every performance he comes back with a new injury from where peo-ple have been grabbing him in the crowd.

What has been your biggest challenge as a band?Yeah getting the second album to where we wanted it to be was definately our biggest challenge so far. It was a case of focusing our influences and really nailing down the sound we wanted for the record. It took a long time but ultimately I think the sound we got for this album is the sound we were always striving for and I’m really proud of it.

Does music influence your fashion style? We like the sharp, clean cut, 60’s rock’n’roll appearance of bands like The Beatles; which is another reason Burberry have become quite prominent for us. The label perfectly combines the military-esque stylings of their heritage with rock’n’roll decoration. It’s awesome! We also like a lot of vintage stuff.

Favorite item in your wardrobe?I was given my trench for the latest Harry Potter premiere. It’s amazing; literally makes me feel different when I put it on. Love it!

Do you steal each others clothes? No, if I was to though it would be George’s wardrobe but he would kick off massively

Who is your best friend in the group?Me and George are the closest, the other three are two years older than us, we have been great friends since school so we’ve always stuck together really. I was always above him at school and now the tables have turned.

Who would you say is the most stylish in the band?George is definitely the most stylish ever since he was younger he just manages to throw anything on and make it work, when I try to do that it rarely works (laughs)

Favorite brands?Burberry, even if we didn’t get sent their clothes, I have always loved their clothes, also Paul Smith, Junk de Luxe, J. Lindeberg, Bolongaro Trevor, Cheap Monday (jeans), Levis

28

What about High Street? Well I shop at Topman now and again, The brands at urban Outfitters are great. Just the other day I bought a pair of suit trousers from H&M but they were a skinny fit. Today I’m wear-ing a beetles t shirt form topman. I really like my vintage clothes there are so many amaz-ing things you find in those shops, waistcoats, jackets boots etc. When we’re in London we were hown all the little wacky vintage shops that are hidden down the back streets. Some of them were crazy!

Have u become more fashion conscious since being in the public eye?Yes definitely, I think anyone would when you’re constantly looked at, you immediately feel the need to make more of an impression and be more style conscious.

Have you ever been given anything to wear that you hated? No because its really important to feel comfortable in what you are wearing because otherwise it shows in yourself that you’re not comfortable. So the stylist always brings us a wide selec-tion of about 7 or 8 outfits to choose form so we have a big input too. Its great because we’re the ones wearing and promoting the clothes we can turn around and say, oh I’ll have this thank you, and we get to keep it (laughs)

What would you be doing if you weren’t in the band?Well I always thought I wanted to be a performing arts teacher, so I went to college to study that but only got three months into my first year then we were signed to our record label. I had an exam that week and my tutor said if you leave you know you will stil have to pay the exam fee. I just said, believe me if you knew what I was doing you wouldn’t care (smiles) .
