1 Photoshop Photoshop: Masks & Selections Creative compositions Photoshop offers many ways of creating compositions using masks and selections. You can create artwork using a wide range of media including photographs, textures, handwriting, newspaper or magazine cuttings, traditional artwork and found materials. Once imported into Photoshop layers can be blended using blend modes, areas can be selected and masked off or painting tools can be used in conjunction with masks to blend areas of different images together. This process is extremely creative and endless in its possibilities. Select your base texture image: 1. File>Open>Select a texture image to be used as a bas for your composition. Select your photograph: 2. File>Open>Select the photograph you will use as a feature for your composition. 3. Import the photograph by using the move tool to drag and drop the image from its window to the texture window. 4. Resize using Command+T and position as required. 5. Use the Polygonal Lasso tools to draw around the part of the photograph you want to keep. 6. From the layers palette click the mask tool to hide the rest of the photograph. 7. Click Image>Adjustments>Black & White to convert the photo to black and white. 8. From the layers palette select a blend mode to blend the image into the background texture – Overlay is a common selection. Select a feature: 1. File>Open>Select a handwriting, newspaper, magazine image to add emphasis to your composition. 2. Import the image by using the move tool to drag and drop the image from its window to the composition window. 3. Resize and rotate using Command+T and position as required.

    Photoshop offers many ways of creating compositions using masks and selections.  You can create artwork using a wide range of media including photographs, textures, handwriting, newspaper or magazine cuttings, traditional artwork and found materials. 

        Once imported into Photoshop layers can be blended using blend modes, areas can be selected and masked off or painting tools can be used in conjunction with masks to blend areas of different images together.  This process is extremely creative and endless in its possibilities. 

     Select your base texture image:  

    1. File>Open>Select a texture image to be used as a bas for your composition.  Select your photograph:

    4. From the layers palette select a blend mode to blend the image into the background composition – Overlay is a common selection. 

    5. From the layers palette click the mask to add a mask to the image. 6. Select a black paintbrush with a 20% opacity, then paint away the areas of the image 

    you don’t require blending as you go.  Add another feature:  

    1. File>Open>Select a paint splatter or traditional artwork texture image to add emphasis to your composition. 

    2. Import the image by using the move tool to drag and drop the image from its window to the composition window. 

    3. Resize and rotate using Command+T and position as required. 4. From the layers palette select a blend mode to blend the image into the background 

    composition – Overlay is a common selection but other may be better. 5. From the layers palette click the mask to add a mask to the image. 6. Select a black paintbrush with a 20% opacity, then paint away the areas of the image 

    you don’t require blending as you go.  Complete the composition:  

    1. If required adjust the levels or other adjustments to enhance different layers of the composition. 

    2. Add creative brush strokes using the Paintbrush tool and creative brushes as required. 

    3. At the top of the Layers palette, adjust the opacity of the layers to balance if required.  

    4. Add and blend other features if required,
