WORD FROM THE PASTOR PALABRAS DEL PARROCO

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

The first reading this Sunday recalls for us God´s visit to Abra-ham and the beginning of the fulfillment of the promise with the announcement of the impending pregnancy of Sarah.Lumen Fidei, the first encyclical of Pope Francis who will visit our continent this week during his Apostolic Journey to Brazil on the occasion of World Youth Day, presents Abraham as a father and model of faith.“Faith opens the way before us and accompanies our steps through time. Hence, if we want to understand what faith is, we need to follow the route it has taken, the path trodden by believers, as witnessed first in the Old Testament. Here a unique place belongs to Abraham, our father in faith. Some-thing disturbing takes place in his life: God speaks to him; he reveals himself as a God who speaks and calls his name. Faith is linked to hearing. Abraham does not see God, but hears his voice. Faith thus takes on a personal aspect. God is not the god of a particular place, or a deity linked to specific sacred time, but the God of a person, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, capable of interacting with man and establishing a covenant with him. Faith is our response to a word which engages us personally, to a "Thou" who calls us by name. The word spoken to Abraham contains both a call and a promise. First, it is a call to leave his own land, a summons to a new life, the beginning of an exodus which points him towards an unforeseen future. The sight which faith would give to Abraham would always be linked to the need to take this step forward: faith "sees" to the extent that it journeys, to the extent that it chooses to enter into the horizons opened up by God’s word. This word also contains a promise: Your descendants will be great in number, you will be the father of a great nation. As a response to a word which preceded it, Abra-ham’s faith would always be an act of remembrance. Yet this remembrance is not fixed on past events but, as the memory of a promise, it becomes capable of opening up the future, shedding light on the path to be taken. We see how faith, as remembrance of the future is thus closely bound up with hope. Abraham is asked to entrust himself to this word. Faith under-stands that something so apparently ephemeral and fleeting as a word, when spoken by the God who is fidelity, becomes ab-solutely certain and unshakable, guaranteeing the continuity of our journey through history. Faith accepts this word as a solid rock upon which we can build, a straight highway on which we can travel. In the Bible, faith is expressed by the Hebrew word ’emûnāh, derived from the verb ’amān whose root means "to uphold". The term ’emûnāh can signify both God’s fidelity and man’s faith. The man of faith gains strength by putting himself in the hands of the God who is faithful. Playing on this double meaning of the word — also found in the correspond-ing terms in Greek (pistós) and Latin (fidelis) — Saint Cyril of Jerusalem praised the dignity of the Christian who receives God’s own name: both are called "faithful". As Saint Augus-tine explains: "Man is faithful when he believes in God and his promises; God is faithful when he grants to man what he has promised".A final element of the story of Abraham is important for un-

derstanding his faith. God’s word, while bringing newness and surprise, is not at all alien to Abraham’s experience. In the voice which speaks to him, the patriarch recognizes a profound call which was always present at the core of his being. God ties his promise to that aspect of human life which has always appeared most "full of promise", namely, parenthood, the begetting of new life: "Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall name him Isaac". The God who asks Abraham for complete trust reveals himself to be the source of all life. Faith is thus linked to God’s fatherhood, which gives rise to all creation; the God who calls Abraham is the Creator, the one who "calls into existence the things that do not exist", the one who "chose us before the foundation of the world… and destined us for adoption as his children". For Abraham, faith in God sheds light on the depths of his being, it enables him to acknowl-edge the wellspring of goodness at the origin of all things and to realize that his life is not the product of non-being or chance, but the fruit of a personal call and a personal love. The mysterious God who called him is no alien deity, but the God who is the origin and mainstay of all that is. The great test of Abraham’s faith, the sacrifice of his son Isaac, would show the extent to which this primordial love is ca-pable of ensuring life even beyond death. The word which could raise up a son to one who was "as good as dead", in "the barrenness" of Sarah’s womb, can also stand by his promise of a future beyond all threat or danger. ¡Let us pray for the Pope and for the pilgrims going to World Youth Day in Rio!

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

La primera lectura de este domingo nos presenta la visita de Dios a Abraham y el comienzo de la concreción de la promesa con el anuncio del próximo embarazo de Sara.Lumen Fidei, la primera encíclica del Papa Francisco, quien visitará nuestro continente durante esta semana en un viaje apostólico a Brasil con motivo de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud, nos presenta a Abraham como padre y modelo en la fe.“La fe nos abre el camino y acompaña nuestros pasos a lo largo de la historia. Por eso, si queremos entender lo que es la fe, tenemos que narrar su recorrido, el camino de los hombres creyentes, cuyo testimonio encontramos en primer lugar en el Antiguo Testamento. En él, Abrahán, nuestro padre en la fe, ocupa un lugar destacado. En su vida sucede algo desconcertante: Dios le dirige la Palabra, se revela como un Dios que habla y lo llama por su nombre. La fe está vinculada a la escucha. Abrahán no ve a Dios, pero oye su voz. De este modo la fe adquiere un carácter personal. Aquí Dios no se manifiesta como el Dios de un lugar, ni tampoco aparece vinculado a un tiempo sagrado determinado, sino como el Dios de una persona, el Dios de Abrahán, Isaac y Ja-cob, capaz de entrar en contacto con el hombre y establecer una alianza con él. La fe es la respuesta a una Palabra que interpela personalmente, a un Tú que nos llama por nuestro nombre.Lo que esta Palabra comunica a Abrahán es una llamada y una promesa. En primer lugar es una llamada a salir de su tierra, una invitación a abrirse a una vida nueva, comienzo de un éxodo que lo lleva hacia un futuro inesperado. La visión que la fe da a Abrahán estará siempre vinculada a este paso adelante que tiene que dar: la fe « ve » en la medida en que camina, en que se adentra en el espacio abierto por la Palabra de Dios. Esta Palabra encierra además una promesa: tu descendencia será numerosa, serás padre de un gran pueblo. Es verdad que, en cuanto respuesta a una Palabra que la precede, la fe de Abrahán será siempre un acto de me-moria. Sin embargo, esta memoria no se queda en el pasado, sino que, siendo memoria de una promesa, es capaz de abrir al futuro, de iluminar los pasos a lo largo del camino. De este modo, la fe, en cuanto memoria del futuro está estrecha-mente ligada con la esperanza.Lo que se pide a Abrahán es que se fíe de esta Palabra. La fe entiende que la palabra, aparentemente efímera y pasajera, cuando es pronunciada por el Dios fiel, se convierte en lo más seguro e inquebrantable que pueda haber, en lo que hace posible que nuestro camino tenga continuidad en el tiempo. La fe acoge esta Palabra como roca firme, para construir sobre ella con sólido fundamento. Por eso, la Biblia, para hablar de la fe, usa la palabra hebrea ’emûnah, derivada del verbo ’amán, cuya raíz significa « sostener ». El término ’emûnah puede significar tanto la fidelidad de Dios como la fe del hombre. El hombre fiel recibe su fuerza confián-dose en las manos de Dios. Jugando con las dos acepciones de la palabra —presentes también en los correspondientes términos griego (pistós) y latino (fidelis)—, san Cirilo de Je-

rusalén ensalza la dignidad del cristiano, que recibe el mismo calificativo que Dios: ambos son llamados « fieles ». San Agustín lo explica así: « El hombre es fiel creyendo a Dios, que promete; Dios es fiel dando lo que promete al hombre ».Un último aspecto de la historia de Abrahán es importante para comprender su fe. La Palabra de Dios, aunque lleva con-sigo novedad y sorpresa, no es en absoluto ajena a la propia experiencia del patriarca. Abrahán reconoce en esa voz que se le dirige una llamada profunda, inscrita desde siempre en su corazón. Dios asocia su promesa a aquel « lugar » en el que la existencia del hombre se manifiesta desde siempre prometedora: la paternidad, la generación de una nueva vida: « Sara te va a dar un hijo; lo llamarás Isaac ». El Dios que pide a Abrahán que se fíe totalmente de él, se revela como la fuente de la que proviene toda vida. De esta forma, la fe se pone en relación con la paternidad de Dios, de la que procede la creación: el Dios que llama a Abrahán es el Dios creador, que « llama a la existencia lo que no existe » , que « nos eligió antes de la fundación del mundo… y nos ha destinado a ser sus hijos ». Para Abrahán, la fe en Dios ilumina las raíces más profundas de su ser, le permite reconocer la fuente de bondad que hay en el origen de todas las cosas, y confir-mar que su vida no procede de la nada o la casualidad, sino de una llamada y un amor personal. El Dios misterioso que lo ha llamado no es un Dios extraño, sino aquel que es origen de todo y que todo lo sostiene. La gran prueba de la fe de Abrahán, el sacrificio de su hijo Isaac, nos permite ver hasta qué punto este amor originario es capaz de garantizar la vida incluso después de la muerte. La Palabra que ha sido capaz de suscitar un hijo con su cuerpo « medio muerto » y « en el seno estéril » de Sara, será también capaz de garantizar la promesa de un futuro más allá de toda amenaza o peligro.”¡Recemos por el Papa y por los peregrinos a la Jornada Mun-dial de la Juventud Rio 2013!

Back to School Supplies Needed!

We are collecting School Supplies for needy children K-12 in our community. Backpacks, paper, pens, cray-ons, rulers, calculators, paste…these are just some of the items we need. Please bring the supplies to our Parish Office. The donation deadline is August 3rd.

Registration for School Supplies - we are registering needy children in our community for school supplies on July 27 and August 3 at Barry Hall 10:30 - 12:00.The child must live on Miami Beach. and be present for the school supply distribution on August 10.

Save the date! Respect Life will be holding a fundraising luncheon on September 28 at 11:30 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the North Dade Pregnancy center that sevices our parish. The Door Prize is a stay at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas. More information coming soon!

Estamos recolectando útiles escolares para los niños necesitados de nuestra comunidad entre pre-escolar y 12 grado. Mochilas, papel, plumas, lápices, reglas, calculadoras, crayones, etc...estos son algunos de los elementos que necesitamos. Por favor lleve los útiles escolares a la Oficina Parroquial. El ultimo día para hacer la donación es el 3 de Agosto.

Inscripción para útile escolares - estamos registrando a los niños necesitados de nuestra comunidad para los útiles escolares el 27 de Julio y el 3 de Agosto en Barry Hall de 10:30 a 12:00 pm. Los niños deben vivir en Miami Beach y estar presentes el día 10 de Agosto cuando se distribuyan los útiles escolares.
