From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers With this column we bring to a conclusion our reflection on three words that can help form us as disciples and missionaries of Jesus Christ: Stillness, Beauty, and Trust. Our God desires an inti-mate relationship with us. In our baptism we become sons and daughters of the Father, disciples and missionaries of the Son, and temples of the Holy Spirit. Stillness, leisure, can help us find our identity in this relationship with God. Beauty can retrain our eyes to see the deep reality of God’s love unfolding before us. To accept and surrender to that love, we must trust. We live in a wounded society that has created a culture of suspicion – a culture of fear. People who are used to seeing only the superficial are not likely to desire to look deep within themselves nor allow others in. They wear masks, even with their friends. Because of wounds many people react by building walls around their heart and are much more likely to expect someone to harm them than to wish them well. These walls are harmful to interpersonal and spiritual growth. An opposite reaction is naiveté, which can also be harmful, as there are sins of defect as well as excess. We are called to be discerning, certainly, but being discerning and open is quite different than being automatically suspicious, fearful, or naïve. To be open to an emotionally and spiritually intimate relationship with someone requires vulnerability and the capacity to open one’s heart. While entering into an intimate relationship with God requires the act of the intellect to assent to God’s will in faith, it too is a relationship of vulnerability that is augmented by the more psychological assent of trust. To grow in our capacity for trust requires a growth in self-knowledge. It is necessary to look within and name the wounds or patterns that are holding us back from trusting. For many this is a scary suggestion. Like the Israelites walking toward the Promised Land through the challenges of the desert, there are those who choose to stay within prisons of their own making because they have been there so long. St. Teresa of Avila, however, exhorts us about the importance of self-knowledge say-ing, “let us strive to get to know ourselves better and better, even in the very smallest matters.” Though patterns of mistrust may be ingrained in us, with our own desire, the help of others, and God’s grace, we can change and move forward toward freedom. The psychologist Carl Rogers says, "The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and change." The Sacrament of Reconciliation, intercessory prayer for healing, psychological counseling, and spiritual direction can all be aides to growth in our capacity to trust. Christ-centered friendship is also an important step in the process of learning to trust God. It should be clarified that not all whom we love should be received into friendship with us. We are called to love our enemies. We are called to love those who struggle with vice. Scripture warns us, though: “Be not a friend to any angry man, and do not walk with a furious man, lest he become a snare for your soul” (Proverbs 22:24). Aelred of Rievaulx, in his classic text, “Spiritual Friendship,” adds “not only men of excessive anger but also the fickle and the suspicious should be avoided in the selection of friends.” Love can be present without friendship, but friendship can never be authentically present without love. Aelred teaches that “a friend ought to be chosen with the utmost care and tested with extreme caution. But once admitted, he should be so born with, so treated, so deferred to . . . [that] he is yours and you are his, in body as well as spirit, so that there will be no division of minds, affections, wills, or judgements.” He continues: “Love is the source of friendship, not love of any sort whatever, but that which proceeds from reason and affection simultaneously, which indeed, is pure because of reason and sweet because of affection . . . the foundation of friendship should be laid in the love of God.” We cannot follow Jesus alone. We follow in community; we follow as a people of communion. To enter into relationships of communion we must make the most of the various ways to learn to trust, including authentic, spiritual friendships. Through such growth, we are all the more capable of receiving the intimate love God desires to share with us. We enter into an inti-mate friendship of communion with Him. Such a relationship is the life of a disciple and missionary. To be a witness in the midst of the world is not easy. There are many challenges. To follow the Lord means to embrace the cross. As St. John of the Cross has said, at times walking with the Lord means “to close one’s eyes and follow in the dark.” If one has only an intellectual or academic understanding of the faith but has not encountered the Lord in a deep and intimate relationship, the rough waters of discipleship may be impossible to bear. The disciple and missionary must have trust in God. The Venerable Fulton J. Sheen says: “Trust Him when dark doubts assail thee. Trust Him when trust is small. Trust Him when simply to trust Him is the hardest thing of all.”

Together, We Change Lives

A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who made a commitment to the 2016 Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD). To date, 151 families and individuals have responded generously, con-tributing $168,530. That is 35 percent to the goal. However, we need the support of all members of St. Augustine Church and Catholic Student Center if we are to be successful in reaching our parish com-bined goal of $476,456. If you have not yet responded to the 2016 ABCD, please make a gift by using the pledge envelopes available in the pews or by making a gift online at www.isupportabcd.org. Thank you for all that you do and the spirit in which you do it!
