Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

“I’ve got a ton of paperwork facing me back at the office.” “He’s a zillionaire with no money worries.” “It was hot as hell

today at the ballpark.” We know not to take statements like these literally. They, and a raft of others like them, are exagger-

ations meant to make a point in conversation. All of us make them without a second thought in the belief that they will help

us make our point more forcefully. A message with punch in it. Bear in mind that the language Jesus spoke in His earthly

life had no superlative degree, as English does. So Jesus exaggerates as He lays out the main condition for being His disciple.

Just listen again to His responses. “I have nowhere to rest My head.” “Let the dead bury the dead.” “Nobody using a plow

should ever look back.” Jesus would have had no disciples at all if people took those answers literally.

But His meaning is clear nonetheless. Being a disciple, as we well know all these centuries later, demands being open to a

radical change in our thinking from whatever philosophy happens to hold sway at a particular time and place. Our lifestyle

is likely to be different from others as an outward expression of this mindset. Besides, it often takes a giant leap of faith into

the unknown on our part. What makes that ultimately possible, of course, is love. In our case, that is love for a person, not

for a philosophical principle.

On one level, we can compare this love to that in a happy marriage. When a man and woman give their “yes” to each other

for life, they do so with no idea of what’s ahead for them or how it will all turn out. There are no guarantees. Except for

their trust in each other and deep love, the risk would be overwhelming. The same could be said for persons who answer the

Lord’s call to priestly or religious vocation. Trust and love are paramount.

All this is equally true for those who commit to the Christian way of life. Following Jesus does not give one an address on

“Easy Street.” Once we set out to live our decision, we know that looking back with any regret is counterproductive.

Why would a person be tempted to do so? Chiefly because Satan, our number one enemy, does not want us united to

Christ. He is a highly skilled salesman who knows our weaknesses better than we do. When we slip up by sinning, he is de-

lighted. But when we come to our senses and turn back to God it’s something like a new lease on life. We are at peace.

At this time of year, when gardening is at its peak, here’s a bit of true wisdom: “A person’s character and his/her garden

both reflect the amount of weeding that was done during the growing season.” And that’s no exaggeration!

First Reading: I Kings 19:16b, 19-21

Elijah, wishing to resign his mission, is told by God to anoint Elisha as his successor. Elisha must leave behind his family as

well as his old life in order to follow Elijah.

Second Reading: Galatians 5:1; 13-18

St. Paul makes a necessary distinction between genuine freedom and license. The law of the Spirit is summarized in service

to and love for our neighbor.

Gospel: Luke 9:51-62

Jesus begins His journey to Jerusalem and His “exodus” back to God the Father. He meets up with opposition from un-

friendly Samaritans. Then He uses hyperbole to jolt His listeners out of their former lifestyle to become His disciples.

COMMUNITY ALLIANCE PROGRAM FOR

HOLY FAMILY Boiling Springs Savings Bank is providing us with a spe-cial opportunity for fund raising. The program is called the Community Alliance Banking Program, and Boiling Springs will make a quarterly donation to Holy Family based on the average balances in all members’ designated accounts. Eligible accounts include checking, savings, CDs, Premium Checking, Money Market and Individual Retirement accounts. Both new and existing accounts are eligible. When you open a new account, inform the Customer Ser-vice Representative that you would like this account to be part of the Community Alliance Program for Holy Family. If you already have an account, visit one of their branches to fill out an enrollment form designating the accounts to be included in the Community Alliance Program for Holy Family. All account information is kept strictly confidential with Boiling Springs and no one from Holy Family has any knowledge of any member’s account information. We en-courage all parish members, teachers and parents to enroll because the more members we have the larger the quarterly bank donation becomes. No money comes from members’ accounts.

Any questions, call Chairman Ralph Aurilia, 973-951-6508.
