FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH Often when we think of the Holy Family; Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, we think about a family living in perfect peace and harmony.
We might imagine a home without conflict or strife or a home where pain and suffering are long-absent. If we prayerfully
reflect on the home life of Jesus we might be able see something more.
Tradition tells us that St. Joseph was considerably older than Mary: so, Jesus grew up in a home with a mature father who
certainly would have taught Jesus how to be a responsible man. Joseph would have taught Jesus his trade—Joseph would
have spent hours teaching Jesus how to be a carpenter. Jesus would have needed to learn how to cut the wood used to build
chairs, tables, and cabinets. Jesus had to learn to drive nails. Jesus would need to learn how to patiently finish the wood.
Someone had to teach Jesus how to read and write, how to tie his sandals etc.
Mary would have cooked and cleaned the house. She prepared meals and sewed clothes. Mary did all the things that any
mother did for her child. She comforted him if he was sick, she helped him dress, she selflessly attended to his needs. She
watched over the infant-toddler-adolescent Jesus and helped him to remain safe. She called him to meals and reminded him
to take care of his chores.
The family life of Jesus is not really recounted in the scriptures, but we do know a few things. The Gospel of Luke recounts the
story of Jesus becoming “lost in the temple” when Jesus remains behind in Jerusalem and his parents are unaware of his
whereabouts. Mary seems to challenge (correct) Jesus; “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been
looking for you with great anxiety.” It seems that Jesus had made a poor choice in staying behind without letting his parents
know. Remember, Jesus is twelve—poor choices for a twelve-year-old are not a sin—they are a natural part of growing up. This
is the last mention of St. Joseph found in the Gospel. It is assumed that St. Joseph died during Jesus’ later childhood So we
also know that Jesus experienced the sadness and grief that come from losing a parent. Something all of us eventually
experience in life.
Further reflection on the Holy Family allows us to see the real humanity of Jesus. We also can see that our own families are
perhaps a little more “holy” than we think. The time we spend in our families of origin is truly a gift from God. Let us pray for
the grace to live in peace and harmony as members of the family of God.
