St. John the Evangelist tells us about a man born blind that everyone discounted because his blindness (handicap) must be the result of some sin. Jesus was aware of this disconnect. He went up to the blind man and turned his handicap (blindness) into an opportunity. Not only an op- portunity to physically be able to see, but also the man born blind was spiritually able to see. How many people get sick or a tragedy happens and they start thinking about how they may have offended God? The good news that we hear in the gospel reading is that handicaps should not be a sign of sin; they should be seen as opportunities. A disability, although humbling, can lead some to become more dependent on God. A mental illness can become an opportunity to surrender. A shortcoming in one’s personality can lead one to be more upright. Whatever our handicap, I believe that God is constantly wanting to heal us, to help us to see. Let us continue to pray that we will be open to allowing God to take our handicaps and turn them into opportunities for his grace; opportunities to turn to Jesus, like the man born blind, and say “I do believe, Lord” (Jn 9:38).

Handicap or Opportunity?

In the astounding story of Jesus’ healing of the blind man (Jn. 9:1-38), Jesus’ helps us to realize that when we accept Him as “the light of the world” (Jn 8:12) that handicaps become opportunities. St. John the Evangelist tells us about a man born blind that everyone discounted because his blindness (handicap) must be the result of some sin. Jesus was aware of this disconnect. He went up to the blind man and turned his handicap (blindness) into an opportunity. Not only an op-portunity to physically be able to see, but also the man born blind was spiritually able to see. It is so easy to set back and judge the people of Jesus’ time as crazy. But, we too associate handicaps, misfortunes, illnesses or even death as a result of someone’s sin.

St. Jude is saddened by the announce-ment that Fr. Joseph Le will be leaving us as an associate on Saturday, April 22nd to become the full time Catholic Chaplain at St. Dominic Hospital. In his short time with us we have been

most grateful of the many ways he has shared his gifts and the sacraments with us. We pray that God will bless him infinitely as he responds to Bishop Kopacz’s call to enter into this new ministry.

Stewardship Thought The blind man was willing to let Jesus minister to him and

willingly did all Jesus asked of him. The Pharisees were more resistant to His message, spending their time and en-

ergy to disprove the miracle. Which am I more like, the man

born blind or the Pharisees?

Please remember in your daily prayers the sick and

suffering of our parish family.

LIGHT AND SHADOW

In faith there is enough light for those who want to believe and enough shadows to blind those who don’t.
