From the Pastor…

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is impossible to explain color to one who has never seen it. Helen Keller, in her 50’s, published an article in The Atlantic Monthly (January 1933), titled “Three Days to See”. She wrote, “At times my heart cries out with longing to see... If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beau-ty must be revealed by sight. Yet, those who have eyes apparently see little. The panorama of color and action which fills the world is taken for granted. It is human, per-haps, to appreciate little that which we have and long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity that in the world of light the gift of sight is used only as a mere con-venience rather than as a means of adding fullness to life. How many of you, I wonder, when you gaze at a play, a movie, or any spectacle, realize and give thanks for the miracle of sight which enables you to enjoy its color, grace, and movement?” Have you ever tried to explain faith to someone who has never known it? It is every bit as much a free gift as Jesus gave to the man born blind. Taking our cue from Helen Keller, we might ask how many of us who do be-lieve use that gift consciously. How often do we give thanks for it? It is easy to take it for granted. Helen Keller suggests we should look at things as if in three days we would be struck blind. Applying that thought to faith, what if we had just three days to build up a store of faith, as it were, and then no more increase, no more deepening? How might we go about it? Today’s Re-sponsorial Psalm 23 might be a good start, but I suspect each of us would take a different approach. It’s an interest-ing concept. What did the man born blind do once he could see? He went back. Where? We don’t know. Why? Well, where else? John tells us nothing about his reaction to his new situation. He is totally unlike the lame man healed in Acts 3:8, “walking and jumping and praising God.” He was not even looking for Jesus, as far as we can tell. In the case of the faith of the man born blind, Jesus again takes the initiative. He seeks him out and asks him, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He adds the gift of faith to the gift of sight, bestowing an even greater gift on top of an already wondrous one. In a short story published in 1915 by Luigi Pirandello, the author encounters his recently deceased mother. She tells him, “Look at things also with the eyes of those who can’t see them anymore. It will make you sad, son, but that will render them more sacred and more beautiful.” Lent provides an opportunity for us to recognize the gift of faith and ask for more. Think of someone you knew who has died, but whose faith was strong and deep and remains an inspiration to you. Now that he or she is gone, look at life, at the world, at other people, with his or her eyes of faith. What a gift of sight that might be!

May the Lord always be at your side during this Lenten journey.

~Fr. Edison Bernavas I.C

Welcome to St. Francis of Assisi! We extend a special welcome to all our visitors and new parishioners who have come to celebrate Mass with us today! If you are new to our community, please introduce yourself to our clergy. If you live in this area and attend regularly, we invite you to join our parish of St. Francis of Assisi. Registration is necessary for better care of souls, more effective administration of sick calls, and matters pertaining to baptism, education, marriage and burial. Registration is very easy, and the cream “Parish Registration” cards can be found in the pam-phlet holder above the table in the lobby. After complet-ing, please place it in the Parish Drop Box, located in the door by the water fountain in the lobby.

Today’s Readings First Reading — As the prophet Samuel anointed David with oil, the spirit of the LORD rushed upon David (1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a). Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading — You who were once darkness are now light in the Lord (Ephesians 5:8-14). Gospel — The man who had been blind from birth pro-claimed: The one called Jesus made clay with his saliva, anointed my eyes with it, and told me to wash (John 9:1-41 [1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38]).

Safety Precautions in our Churches Recognizing that certain communities may have more risk factor or vulnerable populations, at this time, we want to enact certain measures within our church, such as: Temporarily suspending the distribution of the Precious

Blood, knowing that one receives the fullness of the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ in the Concentrated Host.

Temporarily suspending a physical sign of peace, such as a handshake or a hug and instead to bow one’s head or wave to offer peace to those around them.

Suspending the holding of hand while we do the Lord’s Prayer.

Lastly, receiving the Body of Christ in one’s hands in-stead of receiving it in the mouth.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding!

Stewardship Reflections “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appear-ance but the Lord looks into the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7) How often do we invest our time, talent, and treasure in creat-ing an appearance that does not matter at all to God? We strive to impress with our clothing, home, career, possessions, car, and other marks of distinction. But none of these illusions of greatness will impress God. Instead, He will look into our hearts to see how much we loved Him, how much we loved others and how we showed that love by the way we used our time, talent, and treasure here on earth.

2020 Parish Lenten Mission

Upon reflection we realize that the core experience of all life is expressed in relationships. This defines the inner life of the

Trinity itself. It is relationships that grow and mature us in our life journey; nothing escapes this inescapable reality.

It is within relationships that we experience the greatest joys of life and also the most bitter of disappointments. In the four presentations of this Parish Mission fundamental aspects of

spiritual development are reflected through the lens of relationships: Faith, Prayer, Conversions, and Community.

All four are intricately linked one to the other. The end result of this Parish Mission is a ‘spirituality’ that will enable us to

recognize God in each other.

Misiones Cuaresmales 2020

-Padre Edison Bernavas I.C
