THE CATHEDRAL PARISH AND CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINT AUGUSTINE ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA THE THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 5, 2017

Mission Statement of the Cathedral Parish St. Augustine, Florida

We are Christ’s eyes, ears, mouth, hands, and feet - sent out to do justice, especially for the

poor and oppressed, to minister to the needs of the community,

to be faithful stewards of God’s creation - awakening faith among the hopeless,

and promoting life even within the culture of death.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK You probably have noticed how bad our new pews

have become in such a short time (two years after we completed the Cathedral’s renovation)! Well, the compa-ny that manufactured the pews has admitted to poor quality of workmanship and product. They will begin work on Monday of this week (November 6) to repair/replace the pews. This is warranty work, so it will not cost the parish anything.

Most of the work will take place during the evening hours so the Cathedral will be accessible, as usual, during the daytime hours. However, there is a good possibility that some areas of the church will not be available for seating during the 7:00 a.m. Mass and other parts of the day. Please help us by being aware of areas that are roped off as well as signs that may be posted. These are for your safety.

Also, this Friday is our nation’s observance of Veteran’s Day. Please note that the rectory office will be closed and that there will be no Solemn Expo-sition of the Blessed Sacra-ment on November 10. To all our Veterans – Thank you for your service to our nation and its freedoms. Love, Father Tom

Important Parking Announcement!!! Please note that the City of St. Augustine has decided to ex-

tend its enforcement of parking rules to include Sunday morn-ings for illegally parked vehicles. While street parking remains free, vehicles parked illegally will be ticketed.

This includes any vehicle parked along yellow curbs, in spaces reserved for commercial vehicles, taxis or sightseeing vehicles, as well as vehicles parked in the wrong direction or on sidewalks.

These changes have been made by the City of St. Augustine. Any questions or concerns can be addressed to the City at (904) 825-1030.

Are you expecting the birth of a child? The Church shares your joy, and wants to bless God for His goodness to you! The Church’s Blessing of an Infant in the Womb will take place in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of the Cathedral on Saturday, November 4 at 6:15 p.m. and Sunday, November 5 at 10:15 a.m. Expectant parents and their families are encouraged to seek the Lord’s blessings and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Fr. Tom encourages Faith Direct enrollment Many of our registered parishioners should have received by now a letter from me asking them to either become a part of our Faith Direct offertory system or to, possibly, increase your regular, parish donations through Faith Direct. Besides making your donations automatically, Faith Direct also means relief from the hassle of locating your offertory envelopes as you get ready for Sunday Mass AND guarantees the Cathedral Parish will receive your contribu-tions even when you are away for the weekend or an extended time. Please consider enrolling in this program by using the form that was enclosed in the recent mailing. Or you can visit www.faithdirect.net to enroll securely online. Our parish code is FL 144.

Do you have a will or estate? If not, the state and courts will decide who gets your

assets after your death! Even if you have a will, estate or living trust, your future contributions to assist the Catholic Church remain a vital way for your religious faith to continue in the future. The Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of St. Augustine is offering a free estate planning workshop on Tuesday, November 14 from Noon to 1:30 p.m. with lunch provided. The seminar will take place at Santa Maria del Mar Parish, 915 N. Central Ave., Flagler Beach, FL.

For reservations, contact Julia at the Catholic Foundation – (904) 262-3200, ext. 105 or

[email protected]

The First Letter of St. John is a narrative masterpiece which contains the development of becoming perfect as the Eternal Father is perfect. This Apostolic writing is the fruit of the life of St. John the Apostle, the beloved disciple and of those in his Commu-nity. This letter can be seen as a miniature of the fourth gospel. The essential teaching is that the Son of God truly became one of us. Bishop Estévez sees this exploration as a gift in preparation for Christmas. This will be the 26th execution ordered by Gov. Scott, a new record for a Florida governor.

A prayer service will be held in front of the St. Augustine Beach City Hall, corner of A1A and 16th Street, St. Augustine Beach, Wednesday, November 8, from 5 to 6 p.m. Contact: Nancy O'Byrne, (904) 422-3618, or email [email protected].

Have any of you ever seen the movie “Night at the Museum”?

Well… something magical happens inside the museum once it closes for the evening.

EVERYTHING COMES TO LIFE!!!!! This year, on Friday November 17, our annual

Cathedral Gala will come to life in St. Augustine’s very own

LIGHTNER MUSEUM. This is also the perfect venue to celebrate Father Tom’s

60th birthday, although we are not implying that he is old enough to be considered a museum relic!... YET!

Come in costume and experience the delicious food, fantastic music, and an exciting live auction.

Let’s make this a successful event and an evening that FATHER TOM and our COMMUNITY will never forget!

For ticket details, please visit the Cathedral’s website:

"Through His Incarnation, the Lord has united himself for-ever with suffering humanity - not as an abstraction, but throughout history with each suffering person. Jesus is already at the peripheries. The question for us is whether He will be there alone or whether His disciples will be there with Him". - Supreme Knight Carl Anderson

Essays are due December 1. For entry guidelines and more in-formation, please email Youth Program Director Peter Merkle at [email protected].

Stewardship Reflection for the Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

There is no question that Jesus had a way with words. The Word of the Lord is filled with what we are very familiar with in our socie-ty: sound bites, if you will, which convey so much meaning. The last verses of today’s Gospel from St. Matthew contain one of those short statements which carry a more profound meaning. Jesus says, “The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be ex-alted.”

In those two sentences are found the key to a stewardship way of life, which revolves around service and humility. There is no question that these are powerful words. They reveal to us all that we need to understand to be true disciples of Christ. In his letter to the Philippians St. Paul wrote, “Though He was in the form of God, He did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but EMP-TIED HIMSELF, by taking the form of a slave, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, HE HUMBLED HIMSELF by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Phil. 2:5-8).

True humility ultimately will be exalted by God. Our society teaches us to strive to reach the top, but Jesus is reminding us that we need to regard others as more important than we are. We have two choices in life perhaps: to be self-exalters, or to be God-exalted. Is there any doubt as to which path we as Christians should pursue?
