Religious Education - A Fresh Approach to Formation “Understanding the Mystery of the Christmas Season”
The most marvelous exchange is not the gift giving or receiving that often accompanies this holy season. It is what takes place in us through grace, thanks to the incarnation - Jesus Christ being born among us. Thanks to the most extraordinary birth in human history, we become by grace what Christ is by nature.
Consider this profound reality: Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, the Son of God, the Omnipotent, Omniscient, Almighty, and Ever-Present Living God forgoes heaven’s throne to enter human existence as a babe born into obscurity and found resting in a lowly manger. The Church stands in awe of this, naming this mystery “the marvelous exchange.” Help inspire your children and prepare their hearts for the coming of Christ with quotes from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC).
In the Christmas season the Liturgy of the Hours chants: O marvelous exchange! Man’s Creator has become man, born of the Virgin. We have been made sharers in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share our humanity (Antiphon 1, Evening Prayer, Jan. 1; CCC, 526). Being sharers of God’s divinity is almost beyond our human comprehension. Yet the wisest saints have beckoned us through the ages to believe it.
The apostle and first pope, St. Peter, taught that Jesus took on flesh to make us “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4; CCC, 460). St. Athanasius, a feisty fourth-century bishop of Alexandria, spent his whole life in and out of exile defending the Incarnation. He wrote passionately about this exchange: “For the Son of God became Man so that we might become God” (CCC, 460). St. Thomas Aquinas, the prolific 13th century Doctor of the Church, repeated it: “The only-begotten Son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that he, made man, might make men gods” (CCC, 460).
Is this great exchange still happening today? Yes, through the grace of baptism that makes us children of God. (Creative Catechist)
Upcoming Events: Sunday School Classes (K3 thru GR12): Classes - December 14; January 4, 11, 18, 25. No classes on December 21 & 28.

Ever think about getting more out of church? Tired of rushing to run errands between masses? Take time for yourself - spiritually and physically! We discuss the Sunday readings including historical context, how they relate to us in present day, and seek ways to apply God’s message to our daily lives. For more information, contact Tom & Elsbeth Germanson at 205.565.3456.
Adult Bible Study St. Martin Room
We are all familiar with the famous stories of the Bible, but what do they all mean? Where do they fit in the larger picture of God’s plan of salvation for His people? Discover how all these pieces fit together into one cohesive narrative. Please invite a friend! For more information, please call Carl Matzke at 205.317.1605.
Popes, Saints and Infidels St Monica Room
This study is a unique look at key people who influenced major events and developments during the 2000-year history of the Catholic Church. Facilitated by Mike Brown and Sonya Phillips.
