Lucy, who is the presenter, has spoken to me on a number of occasions about current events relating to the church. Today the show should be about the conviction for genocide of Ratko Mladic. You may be aware that I served as an Army Chaplain and spent 6 months in Bosnia and Croatia during the early part of that conflict. I saw, at first hand, some of the results of the so-called ethnic cleansing, in and around different locations in Bosnia. I also visited Sarajevo on several occasions and because it was considered too dangerous, I was never allowed to say overnight. On one instance, the only plane I could get took me to Zagreb for the night. Prior to my flight back to Split where I was stationed, I was driven around Sarajevo in an armoured Range Rover which had a 2 inch windscreen with a rifle bullet stuck in the middle of the screen. I have photographs of the Winter Olympics Training Ground which was converted into a graveyard. When I saw it again, about 2 months later, it was filled with hundreds of new graves. Ratko Mladic led and organised the deadliest of assaults on this city. When inhabitants left their homes and the shelter of the buildings to get food to eat, they ran for their lives between the junctions in the road. Each day, life was a struggle and fraught with danger. I well remember talking to representatives of the Intelligence Corp who were eager to gather evidence on the atrocities that were discovered; they were convinced that one day justice would prevail. This week in The Hague, it did. The power of evil can never ultimately overcome the power of Gods love and peace.
