An ordinary way of marking a change or a big day is to wear new clothes – wedding clothes, the vestments at ordination, the new school uniform or a new outfit to celebrate a birth-day. John the Baptist is introducing the new life of Jesus, and he dresses differently. At baptism we robe the child in the baptismal garment, with the joy of something new. We get ready for the NEW that is to come. We prepare the way. This is the gift of Jesus. Receiving a gift is a sort of challenge to change. We don’t know what it might be; it says something intimate to us; our life is different – something new has arrived. A present of a lawnmower means I might have to cut the grass. We may not always want to accept – a friend of mine gave me the money for a book once which I meant as a gift. He felt beholden to the giver, not just responding in thanks or in love – and we are gifted in love by God. He wants us to take the gift of his Son – and not feel obliged forever. Gifts do change our lives! The Christmas gift is a person – the Son of God, Jesus the Son of Mary. The one who lives our life, dies our death and is raised from death. This gift is the center of the church and brings with it our hope in Jesus. All of us can find Christ at the center in different ways – in friendships and marriages we share love and live in real love; In our time of prayer we give time to Christ. He is at the center and with him are the central people and concerns of our lives and of the church. The gift of Advent is both a comfort and a challenge to our lives.

St. Agatha Parishioners Santa Needs Your Help!

This year, poor Santa has so many children on his list, that he can’t get them all. Santa is so sad because so many little boys and girls on his list will be missed. Please help Santa by giving these little boys and girls a Christmas to remember! This past weekend, the St. Agatha Adopt a Family for Christmas Ministry started distributing the names of the families that need to be adopted for Christmas. When you adopt a family it means that you buy a gift for the family and donate a supermarket gift card and return the gifts and gift card by December 20. If you do not want to adopt a family, we also have the Angels. You take an angle(s) and buy a gift for the age that is printed. If you take an angel, please NO CLOTHING as gifts. We will also accept gift certificates from stores, supermarkets or $$$ do-nations and will be distributed to the families that do not get adopted. Please see Gloria after Mass if you are interested in adopting a family, taking an angle or making a donation.

Gracias. Bendiciones.

A New Year Day of Reflection

Presenter: Josephine Broehm, MA

New Seeds For a New Time: A Newness Will Sprout Within Us Unknown From Before

Saturday January 5, 20019 from 9:30 am—3:00 pm

At each year’s end, we experience a myriad of emotions as we process what has come before and what has yet to be. We may weep or brood over what is gone or that which we have had to let go. We may find ourselves hesitating at the threshold of the new, anxious at the thought of the unknown. Our hands empty yet reaching for the unseen, we may feel internal flutters in anticipation of what will thrive in this new time.

Our day together will include presentation, contemplative reflection, journaling, and sharing. Bring writing materials and a blanket or mat for resting time. For our prayer altar, bring something reflecting the “old” we honor and the “new” we are opening ourselves up to receive.

Questions may be sent to the facilitator at [email protected]

Fee: $50.00 with lunch / $40.00 without lunch (Pre-registration required by January 2, 2019)
