The Master in “Prevention and intervention strategies in traumatic experiences”, coordi- nated by prof. Massimo Ammaniti, has been es- tablished taking into account the increasing number of stressful and traumatic experiences to which the individual and the community face. In this sense, the most recent epidemiolog- ical research has revealed that the percentage of the general population who have experi- enced traumatic events is quite high, ranging from 40% to 75%. The students of the Master, through theoretical and practical experience will explore the con- cept of trauma seen as an event that is gener- ally outside normal human experience and that poses a threat to the physical integrity of self and others; this definition highlights as the term trauma should be considered an objective and identifiable event (accident, physical violence, sexual abuse, diseases), which refers to general stressful an/or negative experiences. A specific knowledge will be gained on the possible link between having experienced traumatic expe- riences and the psychopathological symptoms, whereas in 70% of traumatic events do not cause lasting symptoms. However, it was also estimated that 30% of cases the immediate and long-term consequences of maltreatment, abuse and other traumatic experiences (like being involved in natural disasters and situa- tions of violence) lead the post-traumatic stress disorder. Therefore, a specific area of learning shall be es- tablished on how to respond to stressful and / or traumatic experiences, which must be as- sessed within a complex network of variables: presence / absence of specific events, objective characteristics of events (duration, frequency and intensity), individual perception and inter- pretation of such experiences. Through the acquisition of competences on psy- chodynamic and neuro-cognitive most recent lit- erature, students will reflect on empirical evidence that in individuals who are victims of trauma several interferences occur in different areas related to: attachment, biological function- ing, emotional adjustment, dissociative experi- ences, behavioral control, cognitive functioning, and finally the concept of Self. Students will acquire specific skills on individ-ual symptoms, investigating the alteration ofneurobiological processes related to stimuladiscrimination and physical disorders whichare intrinsically linked to the inability toprocess the event. Much attention will be de-voted to intervention in traumatic situations,with specific reference to learning methodolo-gies and practices area of social intervention.The Master, through joint teaching dividedinto four modules, will enable students to ex-tend the theoretical and practical knowledgeof the potential traumatic experiences andtheir effect as well as possible areas of inter-vention.

Aims The aims of the Telematic Master “Preventionand intervention strategies in traumatic expe-riences” is to provide theoretical and appliedskills to assess the traumatic situations andplan possible interventions aimed at the indi-vidual and to the socio-cultural affiliation. Theinterdisciplinary nature of didactic schedulerises from the necessity of enhancing theknowledge of national and international liter-ature in clinical, dynamic, neurobiological, so-cial fields and its applications in traumaticcontexts.

The Master has the followingspecific aims:

1) to assess individual and social capacity tocope with traumatic events;

2) to intervene through skills empowerment inaddressing individual and social traumaticexperiences;

3) to intervene through structuring a socialnetwork to respond to emergency situations;

4) to intervene through the planning of targetedinterventions in relation to specific populationsand cultures of origin.

End-users and RequirementsThe Master is open to three-year and five-yeargraduates from all disciplines and practitionersof the helping professions (doctors, psycholo-gists, social workers, operators, police, banks,rescue units, nurses etc.. ) who want to explorethe issue of assessment and intervention in trau-matic situations. A good knowledge of Englishlanguage is required.

Educational structure The Master has a duration of one academicyear and is divided into video-lectures, semi-nars, tutorials, chat forums, virtual classrooms,labs (areas: child abuse, bullying, natural dis-asters, social violence and on women, immi-grants, refugees, robberies in banks orelsewhere, burn-out of operators), commentaryby sound recordings and video recordings, su-pervision meetings, focus groups, tutoring, bib-liography and scientific journal articles.

The Master is divided into four interdisci-plinary modules of three months each.

The first module “NATURE OF TRAUMATICEXPERIENCES AND ATTACHMENT” is intendedto provide specific training on the concept oftrauma, risk and protective factors in child-hood, adolescence and adulthood, on thePost-traumatic Stress Disorder and its epidemi-ology, the complex relationship betweentrauma and attachment systems, on issues ofabuse and maltreatment and on neurobiolog-ical and genetic-related related to trauma.

The second module “CLINICAL ASSESSMENTAND ASSESSMENT TOOLS ON TRAUMATICEXPERIENCES” offers specific training on per-sonality assessment in traumatic situations,evaluation tools, with particular reference toself-report questionnaires and interviews onclinical interview and assessment of the conse-quences on people who survived the torture,victims of terrorism, natural disasters and offersan interesting perspective on the traumaticconsequences for the child experiences in ma-ternal depressive framework.

The third module “PROGRAMS AND MODELS OFINTERVENTION IN TRAUMATIC SITUATIONS” isintended to provide skills in intervention, ad-dressing situations of natural disasters, social vi-olence, work with refugees and the specificcontext of eating disorders in childhood trauma.Special attention is given to treatment withEMDR, a specific technique internationallyused, which has interesting theoretical implica-tions and applications.

The last module “SOCIAL INTERVENTION INTRAUMATIC SITUATIONS: HUMAN RIGHTS ANDTHE PRINCIPLES OF SOLIDARITY” aims to givestudents the theoretical and practical tools tounderstand the management of interventionsaimed at communities, with special reference toissues of social exclusion, discrimination andcultures at risk.

Each module provides a number of tutors andprofessors, national and international experts.For each of the four modules that structure theplanned schedule of the Master verifications oneducational content learned are provided. Toachieve the final certification (to be issued bythe International Telematic “Uninettuno”) a finalthesis on a topic agreed with tutors in required.

DidacticsTeaching is provided via the Internet, in the“Master” section of the portal www.uninet-tunouniversity.net, the first portal in the worldwhich teach in four languages: Italian, English,French and Arabic.

The psycho-pedagogical modeladopted makes concretethe passage: � From the centrality of teaching to the central-

petitive and collaborative learning,� Students participate actively in their learning

process and have the opportunity to studyanytime, anywhere.

� The students, are supported in their trainingby a system of online-tutoring that can facil-itate learning and communication networksand to provide tools to address successfullythe study subject.

The On-Line Tutoring is organized into classes ofstudents with an advanced agenda to recog-nize the individual user, and then customizeand get the tracking learning activities and thequantitative and qualitative assessment of thelearning process of each student.

The Didactic CyberspaceThe didactic activity on the Internet unfolds in theWeb-based macro-area, called the Didactic Cy-berspace.In the Didactic Cy-berspace thelearning and de-v e l o p m e n tprocess is imple-mented and ac-cess profiles arediversified throughcustomized loginsand passwordsbased on the threedifferent rolesplayed by the ac-tors of the learningprocess: Professors,Tutors and Stu-dents. The system of dynamic bookmarks gives the In-ternet-based video lessons a hypertextual char-acter allowing different levels of navigation:from one lesson to the other one, among sub-jects of a single lesson, between the materialsreferring to the same subject.
