I would like to welcome new and returning MBP students for what promises to be an ex-citing 2016-2017 academic year with many new developments in store. We are thrilled to welcome a class of 34 new students from 9 states, 5 countries, and 30 undergraduate institutions.

It is bittersweet to report the departure of Erin Riley as Teaching Lab Coordinator and Head TA. We wish Erin all the best with her new opportunity in Madison, Wisconsin, but will miss her organizational skills and com-mitment to the MBP students and labs. We were fortunate to attract Holly Hattaway to take Erin’s place (see the article introducing Holly).

William (Bill) MillerDirector of MBP and Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering

The biggest development over the summer was the relocation of the MBP laboratory to Tech EG17-EG27. As described in more detail by Arthur Felse and Holly, the 20% increase in lab space and the new lab layout has allowed us to add another biological safety cabinet, as well as state-of-the-art new equipment. The MBP student interaction space will move to NG20, while MBP staff and faculty offices will be located in NG13-NG19.

The number of South Africa internships has doubled, with four second-year students going to Cape Town this fall. Biotechnology Day will be held in Evanston on November 10 with MBP Industrial Advisory Board member Francisco Rausa as the keynote speaker.

Many professional development events are planned for the coming year, including a site visit to California and a mixer with MBP alumni in Evanston. Please see the newsletter for more details on these and other activities.

NEW AND IMPROVED LAB FACILITIES

Renovations on the MBP teaching lab are now complete!

T he MBP teaching lab moved to a bigger and better space within the TECH building this quarter. The new lab space is custom-designed to meet the unique needs of a sophisticated biotechnology laboratory. With 20% more space and additional lab bench-es, the new facilities will allow for a comfortable student ex-perience and the possibility of adding advanced equipment. Our new lab space will be used to teach MBP’s Molecular Biotech-nology and Bioprocess Engi-neering laboratory courses.

Concomitant with our move to the new space, we added new equipment to the teaching laboratory. MBP students will now receive hands-on training in several advanced experimen-tal methods using state-of-the art, industry-standard equip-ment. New additions include flow cytometry (Gauva), automat-ed Western Blot (SimpleWes), multi-array metabolite analysis (CedexBio), bioreactor off-gas analysis (BlueSens), and a semi-automated tangential flow filtration system (Cogent TFF).

rooms for microbial and ani-mal cell experiments, thereby eliminating the possibility of cross-contamination during experiments. The curriculum for MBP laboratory courses has been updated to include training in advanced experimental methods. Overall, the new lab space will provide an enhanced and superi-or educational experience for our students.

Since the new lab space was renovated from the bottom up without constraints to work around preexisting work surfac-es or other built-ins, we were able to tailor the laboratory lay-out to accommodate new equip-ment and implement a floor plan which will improve student flow and learning experiences in the lab. The new lab facilities also allow us to dedicate separate

Renovations in progress over summer and fall quarters.

used on professional develop-ment opportunities for current and prospective master’s stu-dents.

Biotechnology Day will con-clude with an open networking session from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, which you are most welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

We hope to see you there!

INTRODUCING HOLLY!

Holly Hattaway is our new Teaching Lab Coordinator

H olly joined MBP in the summer of 2016 after having worked in research for many years. She began her love of research as an undergrad at Northeastern Illinois University where she studied the effects of folic acid intake on develop-ing mammalian embryos. After graduating, Holly began working at Northwestern in a microscopy research lab where she studied HIV transmission. Later, she went on to research genetic factors pertaining to pancreatic cancer.

Currently, Holly is enjoying meeting and working with all of

the new and continuing MBP students at Northwestern. She is a volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America, where she shares her love of science and math with junior high age children. She lives in her native home of Chi-cago, where she enjoys talking about the World Champion Chi-cago Cubs, tinkering with cars, and teasing Svetelana in her free time.

Although Holly may not be a huge fan of writing in the third person, she can be persuaded to do so for the right people.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK SITE VISIT

MBP students visit largest research park in USA

T he Master of Biotechnol- ogy Program (MBP) coordinates site visits with the purpose of educating students about the inner workings of small, medium, and large phar-maceutical and biotechnology companies. Additionally, visits provide an excellent opportunity to interact with industry profes-sionals.

This summer we visited Re-search Triangle Park (RTP), one of the largest research parks in the United States. RTP is lo-cated in North Carolina in the Raleigh-Durham area and is home to 220 life science com-panies that employ over 46,000 professionals. RTP began in the 1960s with one company (IBM), but by the early 2000’s, the park had grown in both territory and companies. The park was con-structed to revitalize the area’s struggling economy. There are plans to add housing and ameni-ties that will attract young pro-fessionals to the North Carolina area.

On July 18th, our first stop was the Research Triangle Park (RTP) headquarters, where we learned about the history of the RTP park. The presentation giv-en by Abby Gingrich, Business Development Coordinator, was insightful and educational.

We then visited KBI Pharma, a contract manufacturing or-ganization (CMO) that focuses on developing and manufactur-ing therapeutics. We received a comprehensive tour of their upstream, downstream, and an-alytical development areas, led by Sigma Mostafa, Vice Presi-dent of Process Development. Additionally, we participated in a career panel that included MBP alumni and others.

Next, we visited bioMONTR Labs, a startup laboratory de-veloping assays and diagnostic tests for infectious diseases. We ended our day at the North Car-olina Biotechnology Center. This facility aids RTP biotechnology companies by providing research and funding support.

On July 19th, we visited Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnol-ogies, a CMO of biologics and vaccines. Our host, Min Zhang, Senior Principal Scientist, ar-ranged a tour and career panel for our group. Next, we visited Galaxy Diagnostics, a startup diagnostic company that orig-inated at North Carolina State University. The company per-forms diagnostics for borrelia and bartonella bacterial species.

The last stop of our trip was Biogen, a large scale biopharma-ceutical company that produces medicine for multiple sclerosis (MS) and is making strides to tackle neurological conditions and rare genetic disorders. We were impressed with their 250,000 square foot large-scale manufacturing plant, which con-tains 90,000 liters of bioreactor capacity.

We look forward to our next site visit to sunny California during Spring Break 2017!

ORIENTATION WEEK 2016 New students build spaghetti towers and collaborate on team flags

Insight / Fall 2016 8

First-year MBP students engaged in a spaghetti tower building activity. It involved putting together a freestanding structure made of 30 spaghettis (connected with small marshmallows) capable of supporting a big marshmallow on the top. This and similar activities, such as creating flags to represent their lab groups, are designed to promote team cooperation and prototyping. The winning spaghetti structures measured at 20+ inches.
