PROGRAMME STRUCTURE & CONTENT

The Master’s Degree programme is managed by a professional programme management team at Kaplan Higher Education Institute. The team ensures that in addition to classes, students will receive regular programme newsletters via email, academic support via email or other online resources and study notes. Programme managers will also provide assistance with scheduling, study group formation, Kaplan City Campus library membership, assignment and examination management, student liaison and organisation, and others.

This programme is supported via internet access to Murdoch University’s online library & resources and faculty visits. Each unit of study is supported with 24 to 48 hours of in-classroom contact conducted on weekdays evenings and weekends.

A typical trimester is a 4-month period covering a full study load of 12 credit points (each unit carries either 3 or 6 credit points) though students have the flexibility to allocate their study load whereby they can study less than 12 credit points. However, any reduction in the number of units studied in the trimester will increase the length of study.

UNIT OUTLINE

Business Finance

This unit examines the financial management issues of a business entity. The tools used by financial managers are introduced and applied in a variety of long and short term financing and asset management contexts. Topics include financial mathematics, capital budgeting, risk and return relationships, cost of capital and working capital management.

Accounting for Managers

While this unit provides an introduction to accounting issues relevant to both preparers and users of business reports, it predominantly explores the principles of financial and management accounting from a user perspective. The focus of the unit is on decision-making providing a practical understanding of how to analyse information obtained from the accounting system to assist in management decision making.

Organisational Behaviour and Management

This unit introduces students to concepts and theories of organisational behaviour useful to managers. The unit considers behavioural impacts at the individual, group and organisational levels. Topics include motivation, job attitudes, stress, issues of group processes and relations, leadership, communication, power and conflict, and organisational structure and design. Theories of how to manage the organisation during times of change and development will be a focus. The unit combines lectures and tutorials and has a practical, problem solving and experiential approach.

This unit explores the development and management of start-up enterprises and social ventures, focusing on commercialisation of new business ideas and technologies. Topics include opportunity recognition and evaluation, Operations-related and exit strategies, innovation and creativity, financing and entrepreneurial networks. The complexities of technology management, innovation strategies and planning are also covered. Students will work in small groups developing a feasibility plan to launch a new venture and learn how to pitch and sell their new business.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management

Strategic Research in International Markets

Research in international marketing provides information about market needs in various countries. It contributes information for all aspects of marketing and shapes an entity’s overall international strategy. Research in International Markets provides students with an in-depth overview of the role and importance of research in international marketing, and the processes of undertaking that research. This includes qualitative and quantitative research methods used to understand and answer specific research questions relevant to businesses, government entities and not-for-profit organisations.

Global Business in the Asian Century

This unit addresses key issues about managing global businesses in the 21st century - often called the Asian century. It examines accelerated globalisation and the rise of Asia, and discusses how managers make decisions on firm strategy, market entry, alliances, marketing, R&D, production, supply chain management, and human resource management in a changing global business environment. The unit places you in the role of decision makers, developing your ability to innovatively apply theories to resolving problems in challenging international business situations.

This unit addresses key issues about the relationship between business, society and the environment in order to foster a critical understanding of the role of firms in contemporary societies. It will pay special attention to the interplay of markets, politics, sustainability science and ethical reasoning in order to foster responsible management-and-governance approaches. It supports the school’s commitment to the United Nations PRME initiative.

Master of Human Resource Management

This unit presents an overview of the management of human resources from the perspectives of HR practitioners and line managers. It examines practical and theoretical aspects of strategic and operational Human Resource Management. Topics such as recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management and remuneration for the organisation’s most valuable asset are covered. Changing views on Human Resource concepts, processes, applications and evaluation will be canvassed. (MHRM students are advised to select this unit early in their course).

Human Resource Management Perspectives

This unit provides an understanding of the linkages among an organisation’s vision, values, strategic planning and human resource management practices relating to recruitment and selection. It outlines HR systems that can be used to bring an organisation’s operations into line with its vision. Techniques relating to planning, recruitment, selection and decision-making will be explored and applied.

Acquisition of Human Resources

This unit is about law relevant to the recruitment, performance and termination of employment relationships in Australia. It investigates the legal relationship between an employer and employee. Coverage of federal legislation is a focus, with a study of contractual rights and obligations, legislated minimum standards, awards, enterprise bargaining and dismissal.

Human Resource Management Law

This unit will focus on the integration of performance appraisal, training, management development and career management systems that form the nucleus of an overall performance management system in an organisation. Such systems need to be mutually reinforcing to achieve the accountability, development, maintenance and motivation of human resources in the enterprise.

Managing, Evaluating and Developing Human Resources

This unit focuses on the role of the consultant or change agent (internal and external) and the applications and limitations of established change consulting approaches in different contexts. Broad approaches or planned interventions explored include: Organisational Development (OD); Organisational Transformation (OT); HR Interventions; Knowledge Management and Organisational Learning, ICT implementation and Business Process Re-engineering (BPR).

Organisational Change, Management and Consultancy

Non-profit organisations operate in areas including welfare, education, community development, health, sport, arts, tourism, politics and the environment. Run by community groups, faith-based organisations, large bureaucracies, entrepreneurs and committed citizens, their contribution to the economy is incalculable, and the variety in their forms and operations vast. This unit will explore leadership and management of non-profit organisations, their context, the theory surrounding their existence and operation, and consider practical aspects such as marketing, financing, governance, and people management.

Leading and Managing Nonprofit Organisations

This unit provides a generic approach to project management and is applicable to any project. You will gain a solid understanding of the various elements of project management including: planning, organising, controlling, scope management, meeting project objectives and attaining project success. You will be able to analyse the performance of a project during the execution phase; describe the major functions of project management and how they are applied.

Project Management

This unit explores the employment relations environment in Australia and uses comparative analysis to study other countries in the region. Topics of interest include various approaches to employee relations, the role of the state, unions and employers, collective bargaining, and industrial conflict and co-operation.

Employment Relations and Asia Pacific Contexts

In this unit, students are introduced to common HR data, metrics and analytics that guide decision-making in order to support strategic organisational goals. The first part of the unit focuses on understanding the role of data in decision-making; the second part of the unit focuses on analysis techniques and data interpretation pitfalls, and the final part of the unit focuses on communication of results to enact change.

Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded the prestigious Master of Professional Accounting. The degree will be the same as that awarded to on-campus students of the university. Graduates will be allowed to use the title Master of Professional Accounting (Murdoch) after their names.Graduation ceremonies are held twice a year in Singapore and once a year in Perth. Graduates are encouraged to attend the degree convocation in Perth with their families whenever possible.

This course allows you to add an accredited accounting qualification to your qualifications from any other discipline. Accounting is vital in the management of any organisation. In this course, you’ll learn how to make the kind of decisions that affect an organisation’s planning, control and performance. You’ll learn about buying and selling company shares, lending funds and providing goods and services. This Master’s degree is eligible to ACCA F1-F9 exemptions.It can be completed in 16 months.

UNIT OUTLINE

This unit provides an overview of the multifaceted governance framework of business in Australia. It gives an introduction to the governance requirements relevant to business within an Australian context with particular reference to business transactions, ethical and fair business practices, the establishment and operation of business associations, including partnerships and corporations, and the rights, duties and obligations of various stakeholders in these business associations.

Principles of Business Governance

This is an advanced unit in financial accounting which focuses on issues that arise because a business is incorporated. The topics include those that have a high degree of specific relevance to large public companies and include share issues, tax-effect accounting, consolidations, asset impairment and intangibles, leases, extractive industries, accounting for foreign currency and accounting for associates. These topics will be discussed in the context of the law, International and Australian Accounting Standards and generally accepted accounting practices.

Corporate Accounting

Master of Professional Accounting

This unit examines the financial management issues of a business entity. The tools used by financial managers are introduced and applied in a variety of long and short term financing and asset management contexts. Topics include financial mathematics, capital budgeting, risk and return relationships, cost of capital and working capital management.

Business Finance

This unit introduces students to the technical aspects as well as the underlying concepts involved in the accounting cycle from recording financial transactions to the production of relevant financial statements in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards. Topics include balance-day adjustments, accounting subsystems, reporting and analysing assets, liabilities and equity. Students will also be instructed in QuickBooks to enhance their understanding of computer based accounting.

Accounting Processes

While this unit provides an introduction to accounting issues relevant to both preparers and users of business reports, it predominantly explores the principles of financial and management accounting from a user perspective. The focus of the unit is on decision-making providing a practical understanding of how to analyse information obtained from the accounting system to assist in management decision making.

Accounting for Managers

This unit introduces students to concepts and theories of organisational behaviour useful to managers. The unit considers behavioural impacts at the individual, group and organisational levels. Topics include motivation, job attitudes, stress, issues of group processes and relations, leadership, communication, power and conflict, and organisational structure and design. Theories of how to manage the organisation during times of change and development will be a focus. The unit combines lectures and tutorials and has a practical, problem solving and experiential approach.

Master of Professional Accounting

The objective of the unit is to develop a theoretical and legal background to the role and responsibilities of the auditor and the audit process. Topics include the scope and limitations of the audit; the legal background to audit responsibilities and duty of care; auditing standards; accepting and planning audit engagements; evaluating audit risk; internal control; audit evidence; audit procedures and audit reports.

Auditing

Increasing competition and rapid technological change mean that, more than ever before, managers must have a sound understanding of the economic fundamentals of business enterprises, the operation of markets and the role played by governments. In this unit particular emphasis is given to the role of innovation and productivity in driving higher output growth.

Economics and Business Strategy

This unit introduces students to essential elements in research preparation. Topics covered will include the development of a literature review to expound research questions; the decision-making process as it relates to research methodology; the legitimisation of data collection strategies and analyses and the essentials in writing up research for scholarship and practice.

Research Preparation for Business

Almost all managers will use descriptive and inferential statistics as part of their work to explain and interpret information. This unit introduces data analysis and decision making tools for managers. Students will be able to identify situations in which quantitative analysis can support problem solving and decision making. They will also gain experience in applying decision analysis technique and statistical packages in management contexts. Includes the modelling of organisations and business problems, descriptive measures of quantitative data and statistical inference.

Quantitative Research for Business

This unit provides an overview of the concept of value and the standards, concepts and principles of valuation and their application in the financial and corporate world. It gives an introduction to valuation theory together with practical skills in business valuation. Different approaches to business valuation will be explored together with outcomes that are theoretically sound and legally defensible in practice.

Business Valuation

The unit considers the principles of Australian income tax law as they apply to all taxpaying entities. The emphasis is on learning general tax rules and how those rules apply to broad categories of business and financial transactions, rather than on the myriad of specific provisions and exemptions. Teaching of this primary tax unit at graduate level is based on the supposition that students will approach tax law as an integrated component of a complex economic and business environment.

Taxation Principles

This unit focuses on providing accounting information to internal management. The topics include advanced costing methods and systems for services, products and overheads; information for managing resources for performance evaluation and tactical decision making. In addition contemporary approaches to measure and manage performance using non-financial indicators will be discussed.

Management Accounting

The focus of this capstone accounting unit is on the theories that underpin contemporary accounting issues and accounting standards. Topics include accounting theories, measurement alternatives, governance and ethics, triple bottom line and social responsibility reporting and the importance of understanding user needs and impediments to transparent financial reporting.

Accounting Theory and Governance

The modern enterprise engages with all quarters of society as it pursues its goals. The core of the engaged enterprise is its people. It is these engaged people who execute strategy with intent while continually exploring new horizons. This unit focuses on fostering and engaging with staff by distributing leadership at all levels of the enterprise, leveraging the power of groups and reaffirms the strategic role of human capital development in learning to innovate new responses to organisational challenges.

Leading the Engaged Enterprise

This unit enables students to investigate how firms and organisations design and execute effective strategies. Exploring relevant issues: macro-globalisation, market competition, environmental, sustainability, information communication technology, meso-government regulatory frameworks, shareholder and stakeholder needs, and micro-resources, leadership and organisational culture and climate. Students investigate the application of Game Theory to strategic thinking and decision making. Students analyse recent case studies and ‘hot topics’ in strategy drawn from the media and business journals.
