MASTER OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN & DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

The Faculty of Environmental Design offers two unique thesis-based research degrees: the Master of Environmental Design (MEDes) and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Increasingly, natural, built and social environments are seen as intertwined, interdependent, and indeterminate, creating challenging conditions which must be addressed to achieve a sustainable future. Meeting this challenge requires environmental designers with exceptional leadership and visionary skills, who are able to inform, design, and manage interventions across the scales of human endeavour.

MEDes PROGRAM The MEDes Thesis program is intended for those wishing to expand their current professional or design-related backgrounds with advanced interdisciplinary practice-based research and study. Blurring traditional disciplinary definitions, students undertake their studies in one or more areas or disciplines included in EVDS. It is typically at the interdisciplinary synthesis of disciplines that environmental design is informed as a field of study and critical practice, is where the complex dynamics of environmental design problems exist, and in which design interventions must be implemented.

PhD PROGRAMThe PhD in Environmental Design (EVDS) allows master’s degree holders the opportunity to become a practitioner of interventionist, professional, and interdisciplinary environmental design. The program challenges candidates to conduct quantitative and qualitative research at an advanced level, developing and demonstrating knowledge and skills in interdisciplinary settings, synthesizing related research findings, and then communicating one’s findings to those outside the field who will use and apply them. Collaboration with the private sector, communities, and/or government organizations is expected.

FUNDINGWhile some financial assistance is available, students are strongly encouraged to seek funding through their own sources and other resources, as every student is responsible for their own funding strategy. Please consult the University of Calgary and Faculty of Graduate Studies Academic Calendars for information on some academic awards.

OUR STUDENTSOur MEDes and PhD students typically assume leadership roles in academia, research institutions, government, and the private sector, both in Canada and in other countries upon graduation. Successful applicants typically have excellent academic records, strong letters of reference, and a clear idea of their intended research topic. They have often already published scholarly work. A notable success factor in the MEDes and the PhD level is the correlation between the topic a student seeks to investigate and the research strengths and interests of our faculty members.
