Prof. Dr. Kurt Biedenkopf

Chairman of the Board of Trustees

It is my great pleasure to present to you the Hertie School of Governance’s fourth graduating class of Master of Public Policy students. They will receive their degrees in May 2010. With this booklet, the School proudly introduces its graduates to an increasingly competitive labour market. As ambassadors of the Hertie School of Governance, the students have been educated to complete policy analysis, grounded in both academic excellence and a practical, problem-solving approach. These features pave the way for career paths in the private, public, and civil society sectors. The increasing openness between these sectors is a challenge that the Class of 2010 is ready to master. Their expertise ranges from quantitative and qualitative methods to strong intercultural awareness.

The Hertie School of Governance defines itself through its deliberate pursuit of interdisciplinarity and openness. I have confidence in the School’s high standards and am sure it will continue to increase the internationality of its student body and faculty.

We strive to meet the claim of being a leading professional school for public policy. The graduates are the School’s assets in this endeavour. I invite you to have your personal assessment of the Hertie School of Governance shaped by the high quality of the individual profiles of the gradu-ating students.

Sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Kurt Biedenkopf

The Master of Public Policy Programme

The Master of Public Policy Pro-gramme at the Hertie School of Governance offers advanced teach-ing on governance tasks in the pri-vate, public, and civil society sectors. Upon completion of the two-year programme, students receive the Master of Public Policy (MPP), which is an internationally-recognised de-gree. The curriculum combines an ex-cellent interdisciplin ary academic ed-ucation, focusing on real-world issues with training in various practical and analytical skills. The core principles of the MPP Programme are carried out through different concepts:

Interdisciplinarity and a problem-solving approachAlthough the curriculum of the programme builds on the academic disciplines of political science, law, economics, and other social sciences, it offers more than mere training in multiple scientific perspectives. At

the core of the programme, interdis-ciplinarity, a real-world orientation, an emphasis on case teaching, and the simulation of decision-making situations convey the theoretical and analytical instruments required for innovative political governance.

Practical orientationThe programme’s practical orienta-tion includes training in analytical skills such as management and negotiation techniques. In addition to the academic courses, MPP students are offered the opportunity of ex-change with leading decisionmakers. An internship and a master’s thesis, in which the students work closely with a client organisation, are also part of the curriculum.

Internationality and a trisectoral approachThe curriculum of the programme takes various political levels and actors from all parts of society into account. The MPP specifical-ly con centrates on new forms and processes of governance, such as public-private partnerships or mod-els of transnational self-governance. An international faculty teaches the classes in English.

Academic excellenceAs a professional school, the Hertie School prepares its students for a specific field of work: steering, organising, and managing complex decision processes in the three sectors of state, business, and civil society. The Hertie School measures its suc-cess in terms of academic excellence and first-rate research and offers its students professional training that is based on cutting-edge research and scholarship.

Career Services

Career Services at the Hertie School of Governance supports students and alumni in making a successful transi-tion from student to professional life and in changing career paths. Grad-uates of the Master of Public Policy Programme will be equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed as players in modern gov-ernance structures. They will have the opportunity to pursue careers in a wide range of occupations within or across the public, civil society, and private sectors.

The Career Services team provides the resources and strategies to help students develop their career plans, as well as find internships and job op-portunities. At the same time, they act as liaison between the Hertie School and institutions or companies who would like to know more about the students. This enables Career Ser-vices to help these institutions and companies to recruit excellent young professionals for internships and pro-fessional positions.

Career Services takes great care in building personal and alumni net-works in the public, civil society, and private sectors. This enables the Hertie School to open doors of oppor-tunities all over the world for current students and graduates.

The Hertie School of Governance offers different tools in order to build a platform for exchange between students, alumni, and future employ-ers. The Profiles of the Class of 2010 are one of them.
