Master of the Order’s Latest Letter Excerpt and Link Here is a link from the Master's latest letter (Feb 2, 2015). http://op.org/en/content/dominic-government-spirituality-and-freedom Even though it's centered on consecrated OPs, there's still so much in there that is applicable for the Laity. Note the Master’s last paragraph.

On the annual theme of the Jubilee, I would like to mention one last spiritual principle of govern-

ment in the Order, that of unity and communion. Here again, it is by the criterion of the mission that

we can move forward. It is to the extent that we patiently take the means of common deliberation

which directs the ministry of preaching that individuals, communities, provinces and all the entities

of the Dominican family enter into the dynamics of integration in a single unity. Each of these is of

course invited, summoned, to bring to the common good their own identity, personal, cultural, ec-

clesial. But because of the common reference to a founding enthusiasm which has consecrated us,

all together, to preaching, our desire is to respond together to this sending. Or rather, what is even

more demanding, we ask the Spirit to make of us a preaching communion. We make this demand

along with the incessant prayer that the Spirit of communion might open in this world the horizon of

salvation; establish in our hearts the hope of the new creation. Above the door of the Basilica of

Santa Sabina, given to St. Dominic by Pope Honorius III, the mosaic representing the Church of the

Circumcision and the Church of the Gentiles recalls this first horizon of the preaching of the Order:

the Word of truth obliges us to serve, through preaching and through witness, the promised com-

munion. This is why we are sent. And on the door of the same basilica, as we know, the representa-

tion of the crucifixion recalls that this preaching will lead us to become disciples of Him who,

freely, gives his life so that all might be gathered together in unity.

President’s Letter named as “Consultor to the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization” by His Holiness, Pope Ben-edict XVI and “peritus” (expert) to the Synod on the New Evangelization in October, 2012.

A flyer and registration form is included in this issue of eLumen. You will also be able to regis-ter online beginning March 19th. Just go to our website: www.laydominicans.org and check out the “What’s New” section. Major credit cards will be accepted through PayPal options when you reg-ister. PLEASE NOTE: your hotel room reservations are separate from your Congress registration. Check out the flyer for specific information and rates.

I hope you will join us in this once-in-a-lifetime Dominican community event. With so many outstanding speakers and events, this prom-ises to sell out quickly (our capacity is 250), so please make your reservations early. Let’s join to-gether and show the world why we’re DOMINI-CANS: Praising … Blessing … Preaching … 800 years and forevermore!

I humbly ask that you keep the success of the Congress in your prayers. Know that you all continue to be remembered in my daily prayers and good works.

God’s blessings always,

Dear Brothers and Sisters, By God’s Providence, the Order of Preach-ers will be opening the 800th Anniversary Year of the Order’s founding in November, 2015. By (and with) God’s Grace, the Laity is opening the 800th Anniversary Year for the Province of St. Joseph in conjunction with our 10-year Congress. This is a monumental occasion; and I pray you will join your brothers and sisters in this joyful, prayerful event. The Congress theme is “DOMINICANS: Praising… Blessing… Preaching… 800 Years and Forever-more!” I would like to see you there.

As you know, the Order has been cele-brating Jubilee years highlighting the various mem-bers and missions of our Dominican family. All these events in the recent years have been the pre-cursor leading up to the Order’s 800th anniversary. For the Jewish people, a Jubilee was a time of joy and renewal when “you shall return, every one of you, to your property and every one of you to your family” (Lev 25:10). For us, this Dominican Jubilee invites us back to the origins of our Order and, par-adoxically, reminds us how these origins were a “sending out” by St. Dominic. With this in mind, our Congress carries an emphasis on this “sending out” – how each of us is called to evangelize in our unique circumstances. Speakers from all walks of life will introduce and inspire us to consider unique avenues for evangelization.

As a special honor, the Master of the Order, fr. Bruno Cadoré, O.P., will join us in our opening celebrations and liturgies. With the presence of the Master, there will be an opportunity for those in formation preparing for advancement to be Re-ceived into the Order or make one’s Promise to the actual descendent of St. Dominic. To find out more information about this wonderful opportunity, please contact Kathleen Desrosiers at [email protected].

Added to our list of great and inspiring speakers (Lay and Consecrated), is the internation-ally known speaker, author, and Catholic media personality, Dr. Ralph Martin. Dr. Martin was

From the Provincial

Promoter’s Desk

Fr. Bede Shipps, O.P.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Saint Dominic,

Blessings to all of you as we continue the journey of Lent, remembering that the price of our redemption was noth-ing less than the complete faithfulness and the Passion of the Son of God. The Lord Jesus "loved the Church, and gave himself" to save us from sin and eternal death. As disciples we ask now for the grace to follow in the Lord's foot-steps, his way of sacrificial love. We rededicate our-selves to accepting, day by day, what Bonhoeffer (a German theologian who preached against and was ultimately mar-tyred by the Nazis) called "the cost of disciple-ship." We join Saint Paul in marveling at "the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." We refocus on our call to be holy and our call to serve one another.

This month has involved travel--one trip to Durango, Colorado to see my dad and step-mom, who are in their nineties, and a second trip to help out at Saint Louis Bertrand parish in Louisville, Kentucky. The last night in Colora-do, as I was packing, a call came to my motel. Dad had fallen and was being taken in an am-bulance to the hospital; my stepmom Roberta had ridden with him. Could I drive down to the hospital and stay with them? The long drive seemed endless. I wondered what I would find. The emergency room staff got me into the examining room quickly, and there was Dad, his head bleeding, and Roberta, as always, bringing calm and kindness to the situation, and now clearly concerned about how Dad was doing. Hours went by, and after tests, stitches, cleanup, and hydration, Dad would be OK, and I was able to drive my folks back to the assist-ed living center where they live. We were very fortunate---good care and good outcome. So

Fr. Bede Shipps, O.P., Provincial Promoter

many people pass through emergency rooms every day! So many families watch and wait and hope. My Dad's trip to (and, let us be thankful, trip home from) the hospital is a re-minder of our Christian call to support the sick and their families by visits, letters, and prayers.

Louisville was terribly cold, with more than the usual amount of snow on the ground. The welcome, there, however, was very warm. I had been assigned to the parish in the mid-1990's, and it was wonderful to see old friends. There had been changes. Young parents in 1995 were now grandparents; people I remem-bered as little children were finishing grad school, getting married, or juggling all the tasks of parenthood. Other aspects of Louisville, though, had not changed at all. The Dominican Laity, with whom I got to meet, are as dedicat-ed, prayerful, and enthusiastic as they have al-ways been. Their skill in putting together a pot luck has not diminished, either. It was a treat to see old friends and make a few new ones.

Do take care of yourselves. Let's keep each other in prayers as the whole Christian people draws near to Christ our Savior.

Wishing you every blessing,

Fr. Bede

The Father’s Love

"Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing;

for whatever he does, that the Son does likewise. (John 5:19)

Every parent whose child unexpectedly

delivers some startling vocabulary under-

stands this saying. It is also startling to see the

mystery of the Trinity disclosed in this homely

way. The Son, though God, is yet God from

God. Subordination does not conflict with con-

substantiality.

The Son regards the Father in complete

love: "I do as the Father has commanded me,

so that the world may know that I love the Fa-

ther." (John 14:31)

What makes this work? How is the Son

not a puppet? The Father's Love makes it

work: "For the Father loves the Son, and shows

him all that he himself is doing; ..."(John 5:20)

Jesus' remarkable personality shows love en-

hancing and developing individuality.

So, how are we doing? The family met-

aphor of the Most Holy Trinity applies to the

Dominican family. We are called to a certain

subordination, to the Rule and its summons

"to bring Christ's living presence to peo-

ple...,"(Rule: I.1 ) and to our leaders. And our

leaders owe us the love that the Rule shows in

depicting our call and, indeed, the same sort of

love the Father shows the Son — a love which

fosters, guides, and develops individuality.

We are called to be generously loving to

the lost. I will try to be generously loving to

you. Join me?

Preaching on the International Bridge By Ms. Alexandria Faiz, O.P.

St. Mary’s Chapter New Haven, Connecticut

““Ultimately, it is up to concerned citizens,

women and men, to bring the seedlings of

‘equality, development, and peace’ to full flow-

er, and to protect them from

the encroaching culture of

death. Fortunately, we do

not garden alone. Not only

are we surrounded by a

cloud of witnesses, but di-

vine grace is always operat-

ing in the world, inviting us

to cooperate with it in build-

ing the civilization of life

and love.”

Above is an excerpt from a

First Things article, “What

Happened at Beijing,”

written by Dr. Mary Ann Glendon, former U.S.

Ambassador to the Holy See and currently

serving as vice-chair of the U.S. Commission on

International Religious Freedom. March marks

the twentieth anniversary of the United Na-

tions Fourth World Conference on Women in

Beijing, an event that many non-governmental

organizations consider pivotal but leaving be-

hind many unfulfilled commitments.

Dr. Glendon led the Vatican’s 22-member dele-

gation to the Beijing conference, making her the

first woman to head an official Vatican delega-

tion. Her appointment was often seen as a

“conciliatory gesture to avoid driving the Vati-

can into isolation in Beijing,” as The New York

Times reported in 1995. This conference, after all,

occurred just over a year after Saint John Paul

II penned the apostolic letter Ordinatio Sacer-

dotalis (“On Reserving Priestly Ordination to Men

Alone”).

In his letter to women for the Beijing Confer-

ence, John Paul II referenced his earlier apostol-

ic letter from 1988, Mulieris Dignitatem (“On

the Dignity and Vocation of Women”):

“Women will increasingly play a part in the so-

lution of the serious problems of the future: lei-

sure time, the quality of life,

migration, social services,

euthanasia, drugs, health

care, the ecology, etc. In all

these areas a greater pres-

ence of women in society

will prove most valuable, for

it will help to manifest the

contradictions present when

society is organized solely

according to the criteria of

efficiency and productivity,

and it will force systems to

be redesigned in a way

which favors the processes of humanization

which mark the ‘civilization of love’” (letter, n.

4).

These documents have recently received a

great deal of attention as the media pursues

Pope Francis’s every move. As usual, though,

few people read the inspired words them-

selves. The Holy Spirit moves through those

syllables, eventually lifting up the letters on a

page to become social and political movements.

That we know.

Earlier this year, a Dominican—Sister Donna

Markham O.P., Ph.D.—was named as the first

woman to lead the 105-year-old Catholic Chari-

ties USA. She will assume that position on June

1. Like Dr. Glendon’s appointment twenty

years ago, Sister Markham’s new role has been

rumored to be a conciliatory move, with her

being called simultaneously a “highly regard-

ed” and a “rarely regarded” Dominican.

In a 2008 interview Sister Markham gave on

leadership, she revealed one of the reasons Lay

Dominicans cite for why they’re drawn to the

Order. “Our tradition of participative govern-

ance and our long-held belief that true authori-

ty resides in the communion of the members

position Dominicans well in this historic peri-

od. We have known since our mediaeval foun-

dations that authoritarian models of leadership

are generally not effective. Dominic envisioned

a different way. While we may not be con-

sciously aware of how these ancient values re-

sulted in a leadership style that differs from

many other religious Orders, my rather biased

sense is that it has resulted in healthier and

more mature group functioning in the service

of our preaching mission.”
