Master’s Degree in Heritage Science
Careers
1 - General presentation
> The Master’s Degree in Heritage Science Careers includes the course History Civilization Heritage
of the Graduate School in Heritage Intelligence (ESI-Pat) offered by the UFR Centre d’études
supérieures de la Renaissance at the University of Tours. It is based on the experience acquired by
the CESR in the field of the Heritage Science over the past ten years.
> Linked to the regional Heritage Intelligence programme, it is also based on the expectations of
professionals in a changing socio-economic context in the tourism, culture, publishing, libraries,
education and research sectors. It emphasizes the decisive contribution, for these different sectors,
from basic and practical research in humanities and social sciences and coordinated with other
scientific sectors.
> The course provides training in project management of digital culture and technological tools,
such as publishing, publication and communication of high value-added content. It opens on an
expert knowledge in the preservation, exploitation and development of heritages.
> It prepares doctoral students to develop new fields of research, as well as managerial
responsibilities that require a critical culture of historical and heritage knowledge, expertise in data
acquisition and processing, and digital documents related to these sectors. Based on the acquisition
of transversal skills, it prepares students for integration in the professional world by acquiring
adaptability, responsiveness and ability to lead a team.
> The Master’s Degree in Heritage Science Careers also offers an optional specialization in Written
Heritage and Digital Publishing, which more specifically prepares students in the preservation,
development and digital processing of written heritage (libraries, archives, research projects).
This optional specialization resulting from the MSP Master’s Degree is enriched by some adapted
courses from the Master’s degrees in Cultures and Heritages of the Renaissance and Digital
Mediation of Culture and Heritage.
2 - Admissions
> The course is open to all students capable of pursuing a Master's Degree with a focus on humanities
and social sciences. It is open to students resuming their studies, in continuing education, according
to procedures to be determined on a case-by-case basis.
> The application will be open from 23 April to 15 May 2018 and submitted online through the
University of Tours website.
> The application file must include the following documents: to apply for Master I,
undergraduate’s, transcripts, and to apply for Master’s II, the Master’s I transcripts; a resume
without a photo; a cover letter in which will be specified the research project envisaged and
desired career. The research project developed in the application will not necessarily determine
which one will actually be developed during the training.
> For students from universities outside the European Union, a specific registration procedure is
to be followed. For more information, go to the international portal of the University of Tours and
Campus France portal (http://www.CampusFrance.org).
> Please note: this procedure has a specific timetable and requires C1 level in French.

3 - Organization of the programme
> The full course is divided into four semesters, three specific semesters and a fourth semester of
specialization devoted to professional skills in the form seminars (50 hours), internships and training
workshops to and through research according to a modular organization, depending on the
student's choice.
> During the three semesters students will follow:
two modules specific to the programme per semester, i.e. 6 modules
a module per course semester as part of the History Civilization Heritage
programme
one reinforcement module per semester devoted to digital literacy and
technological tools
> The knowledge acquisition modules are organized into thematic seminars that can be led by one
or more teachers. Each of them is subject to a specific assessment according to methods specified
at the beginning of the semester by the teachers.
> Internships can be carried out as an option in first year (short internship outside training dates)
and second year (long specialization internship - from 3 to 6 months).
This programme also offers courses in the form of workshops in M2. They are organized in an
intensive form of one or two weeks and highlight the results of interdisciplinary research with a
practical learning that will take place, wherever possible, in the field. They will familiarize students
with the new methodologies and research manufacturing procedures and will be geared towards
student professionalization, in liaison with public and private partners of ESI-Pat.
> During these two years of training, students develop a supervised research on a specific topic
determined in close cooperation with their Research Director. At the end of M1, this project gives rise
of a pre-research thesis defense supported by a practical learning if it is accompanied by a short
internship. This work exposes the chosen topic, research approach and sources used. The work
continues in M2 and gives rise to the writing of a complete thesis argued before a jury.
> The language of instruction is in French but courses can be given in another language, in particular
English, in partner universities or in Tours, if necessary.
4 - Careers
> The course aims to train students capable of conducting research in the field of food studies by
mastering the methods of at least one disciplinary approach among those taught in the program
and of integrating or carrying out a research or development project.
> The training leads either to the continuation of training through research as part of a doctorate or
research studies, development and project management for the various actors in the development
of cultural and natural heritage: public and para-public organizations (associations, trade unions
and local authorities), companies or associations.
