Chapter1.WelcomeandPurposeofthisHandbookWelcometotheDepartmentofNutrition,FoodScience&PackagingatSanJoseStateUniversity(SJSU).Wewishyousuccessateverystageofyouracademicjourney.ThepurposeofthisstudenthandbookfortheMSprograminNutritionalScienceistoprovideyouwithimportantinformationthatwillfacilitateyourprogresstothemaster’sdegree.ThishandbookdescribestherequirementsforapplyingtoSanJoseState.Italsoprovidesinformationaboutgraduateschool,ingeneral,andrequirementsfortheMSinNutritionalSciencedegree,inparticular.Theappendixincludessamplesofimportantformsthatyouwillneedtofileduringyourprogression.Wehavemadeeveryefforttoprovidecompleteandaccurateinformationinthishandbook,butuniversitypoliciesoftenchange.PleasenotethatdepartmentpoliciesarealwayssubordinatetothosedescribedontheGraduateAdmissionsandProgramEvaluations(GAPE)websitewhichcanbefoundhere:http://www.sjsu.edu/gape/current_students/

Whatdoesitmeantobeagraduatestudent?

Graduateschoolisaspecialtimeforstudentsandfacultymentors.UnderstandingthatgraduateschoolisnotsimplyacontinuationofyoursenioryearasanundergraduateisthefirststeptosuccessfulcompletionofyourMSdegree.Asagraduatestudent,notonlywillyoubeexposedtodifferentmaterialfromundergraduates,butmoreimportantly,youwillbeexpectedtogoaboveandbeyondthatofanundergraduateinyourlearning—specifically,youwillbeexpectedtousetheinformationinnew,creativeandsophisticatedways.Afterallyouarebecoming“masters”ofafield.Itisalsoexpectedthatyouwilltakeresponsibilityforyourprogressthroughtheprogram.Yourfacultyadvisorandothersareheretohelp,butyoursuccesswilldependonyourownpersonalcommitmenttoexcellence.Learningismorethanjustgettinggoodgrades.Itishopedthatyouwillself-engageinthemanyfacetsofscience—includingreadingtheliterature,conductingresearch,analyzingandinterpretingdata,andpossiblyparticipatinginconferencepresentationsandpublishing.Asprogramfacultyweareheretoexposeyoutotheory,techniques,andexperiences,whichmakeupthescienceofnutrition,foodscienceandpackaging.Whatyougetoutoftheprogramisultimatelyuptoyoureffortsandcommitmenttoyourgraduateexperience.

TipstoSuccessinGraduateSchool

1.Takeadvantageofprofessorsandothercontactsaroundyou.Chancesareyouwon’tfindyourselfinanotherresearchpositionlikethisonewhereyouhaveaccesstosomeofthebestandthebrightestinyourfield.Youmayneedthosecontactsforyourfirstjobafteryougraduate,too,soitisbesttocultivaterelationshipsearlyonandnotjustwhenyou’rereadytoaskforrecommendations.

2.Reviseyourapproach.Startinggraduateschoolwiththeattitudethatitwillbeabreezejustbecauseyouwereastellarundergraduateprobablyisn’tthebestidea.Pursuinganadvanceddegreewon’tbethesameaspursuingyourbachelor’s,norshoulditbe.Gointotheexperiencewithhighexpectationsforyourself,andtheattitudethatyou’llneedtodevotemoretimetoyouracademiclifetobesuccessful.

3.Getorganized.Muchofwhatyoudoonthegraduatelevelwillbeusefuldowntheline,whetherthatmeansanassignmentwillbecomeapartofaportfolioortheresearchyoudowillfindaneventualplaceonyourresume.Comeupwithasystemwhereyoucancompileanythingyoumayreturntoaftergraduation,separatefromanythesismaterialsyoualreadyknowyou’llneed.

4.Takeinitiative.Thereisn’tmuchhandholdingingraduateschool,andyou’lllargelybeexpectedtofigurethingsoutonyourown.Ifyoudohavequestionsabouttheprogram,financialaid,orjustaboutanythingforthatmatter,it’suptoyoutofindtheanswer.Yourprofessorswilldefinitelyappreciateyoucomingtothemsoonerratherthanlater.

5.Focusontimemanagement.Ifyoustruggledwithtimemanagementinthepast,you’llneedtothinkabouthowtobestmanageyourtimeasagraduatestudent.Comparedtowhenyouwereanundergraduate,assignmentswillbemoreinvolved,examsyoutakewilltakemorepreparation,andyou’llbespendingtimeonresearch.Everythingalwaystakeslongerthanexpected!It’smuchhardertoprocrastinateongraduatelevelworkthanitmayhavebeenwhenyouwereanundergraduate,sostayontopofyourstudies.Keepacalendar,to-dolist,orwhateverwillhelpkeepyouontrack,becausethecourseworkandassignmentsexpectedofyouwillbemoreintensethanthoseyoumayhavebeenusedtoasanundergraduate.

6.Prioritize.Therewillbealotthrownatyoufromtheminuteyoustartgraduateschool,andit’suptoyoutofigureoutwhat’smostimportanttodonow,andwhatcanwaituntillater.Don'tprocrastinate.Bigprojectsmayneedtobetackledpiecebypiece,andyou’llberesponsiblefornotlettingallofyourotherworkandresponsibilitiesslideinthemeantime.

7.Becomeanexpert.Takeadvantageofresearchopportunities.Talktoprofessorsandfindoutwhatthey’reinvolvedwith,andaskifyoucanhelpout.Whenelsewillyouhaveaccesstothecaliberofacademicprofessionalsandmaterialsthatyou’llhaveingraduateschool?Gettingmoreinvolvedinresearchinyourfieldmayopenupdoorstofellowships,grants,andassistantshipsthatareoftenbasedonyourexperienceandwillingnesstoconductresearch.

8.Budgetwisely.Itmaybedifficulttosavemoneywhileingraduateschool,butitshouldbeyourgoaltolivefrugally.Youprobablyhavestudentloandebtwaitingforyoufromyourbachelor’s,soyoushouldn’trelyonloanstocoverallofyourcollegeexpenses.Findsomepart-

timeworkthatplaystoyourstrengthsorlooksgoodonaresumeandsticktoabudget.

9.Branchout.Eventhemoststudiousamongyouneedstoleavethelibrarysometimesandgetacquaintedwiththerestofyourgraduateschoolclass.Makesuretotakeadvantageofwhatyourschoolhastoofferfromtimetotime,whetherthat’salectureseries,astudentgroupaffiliatedwithanissueyousupport,orfreepizzainthestudentlounge.Evengraduatestudentsneedabreaksometimes.

Leaveofabsences

Asastudent,youcantakealeaveofabsenceforoneormultiplesemestersofenrollment.Whenyoureturn,youwillstillbeclassifiedasanactivestudentandwillnothavetore-apply.However,inordertotakealeaveofabsence,youmustfollowverystrictrules.GraduateStudiesallowstwotypesofleaves:theone-semesterleaveandtheofficialleave.

Onesemesterleave:Onceagraduatestudenthasenrolledandcompletedthefirstsemesterinwhichtheywereaccepted,theyareconsideredactivegraduatestudents.Agraduatestudentthenhastheoptionofmissingonesemesterwithouthavingtofileanyleaveform.Thestudentmustenrollandcompletethesubsequentsemesteraftertheironesemesterleaveortheywillbediscontinuedandwillhavetoreapplytotheprogram.Thereisnolimittothenumberoftimesastudentcantakethisonesemesterleave.Summersessiondoesnotcountasafullsemesterandcanbeautomaticallyskippedwithouthavingitcountasaleaveofabsence.Graduatestudentswillstillreceivearegistrationnoticeforthesemestertheyaresupposedtoreturnanddonothavetofileanyspecialreturnforms.

Officialleaveofabsence:Graduatestudentsmayqualifyforaleaveofabsenceiftheywishtomissmorethanonesemesterwithoutpenalty.Toapplyforanofficialleaveofabsencepleasecompletetheofficialform(foundontheOfficeofAdmissionsandRecordswebsite).Astudentmayonlytakealeavefor4semestersbeforereturning.OnceastudentknowswhentheywillreturntheyshouldnotifyAdmissionsandRecordsasearlyaspossiblesoregistrationwillnotbejeopardizedinthereturningsemester.

Returningafteranon-leaveofabsenceWhenagraduatestudentwantstoreturnaftermissingmorethanonesemesterandisnotonanofficialleaveofabsence(asdescribedabove),thestudentisnolongerconsideredagraduatestudentandwillhavetore-applytotheUniversity.Agraduatestudentmustfollowthesameapplicationrulesanddeadlinesasotherprospectivestudents.Onceastudentisre-admitted,theirpreviousacademichistorywillcontinuetobeusedfortheirgraduatecareeraslongasitisnotolderthan7years.

ContinuousenrollmentIfyouhavecompletedalltherequiredcourseworkandonlyhavetocompleteyourprojectorthesisand/orinternshipyoumustenrollinaspecialclasscalledNuFS290R.Failuretoenrollmayjeopardizecompletionofyourdegree.

TimelimitforcompletionofdegreeSection40510(b)(2),CaliforniaCodeofRegulations,Title5,Education,requiresthatcoursesforcompletedmaster'sdegreeprogramsbenoolderthansevenyearsatthetimeoftheawardingofthedegree.Thismeansthatnomorethansevenyearsmayelapsebetweenthetimeyoucompletethefirstcourseinyourprogramandthedateyouactuallycomplete(notregisterfor)thelastcourseontheprogramandcompletetherequirementsforthedegree.If,afterreadingthecataloginformationonthe7-yeartimelimit,youstillhavequestionsregardingthetimetocompleteyourdegree,email/calltheEvaluatorlistedforyourprogram.

YoucanearnyourMSdegreebyfollowingEITHERPlanA,whichincludes30unitsofcourseworkincludingthesiscompletionanddefenseORplanB,whichincludes30unitsofcourseworkincludingprojectcompletionanddefense.Forcompletionofthedegreeyouarerequiredtoshowcompetencyinyourgraduateobjective,maintainaGPAof3.0orhigherinallclassesatSJSU,andreceiveatleastaCinallclasseslistedonyouradvancementtocandidacyform.Aminimumof15unitsof200-levelcoursesisrequiredforyourgraduateprogram

4. HowsoonwillIhearabouttheacceptancedecision?10-12weeksfromthesupportdocumentdeadline.

ArethereprerequisitesforcoursesanddoIneedtocompletethembeforeapplying?Yes,thereareprerequisites.Pleaseseethecoursecataloguefortheseprerequisites.Becauseofthedifficultyoftakingundergraduatesupportcourses(outsidetheNUFSdepartmentatSJSU),allstudentsarestronglyadvisedtocompleteprerequisiteclassespriortoenrolling.Consultwithastudentadvisorregardingwhichprerequisitesarerequiredpriortoadmission.
