MasterTag started creating bar coded labels in orderto assist retailers in increasing speed and accuracyat the checkout register.

Ludwig "Lou" Schmidt startedMaster Products Company with the purpose of making smallinjection molded plastic parts. His first product was a line offishing bobbers, called Master Float, which he designed.

A line of plastic horticultural labels forgreenhouse growers wasintroduced to replacewood labels, at thesuggestion of HarryWeesies of Weesies Greenhouse.

By rebuilding old equipment himself, Mr.Schmidt was able to print plant varietynames on the labels.

Master Products Company developed a labelwith a full color picture of the plant. Familymember Richard K. "Dick" Hughes joined thecompany as Master Products became one ofthe first producers of full, four-color processprinting on plastic.

Current owner Richard K. "Rick" Hughesjoined the company and brought thetotal employment up to six people. Thisyear, a new plastic sheet extrusionprocess was implemented.

The picture label line wasredesigned to better matchcustomers' needs and wasnamed the Master Tag. Thischange also sparked acompany name change fromMaster Products Company tosimply, "MasterTag."

Today, MasterTag offers managedinventory services, merchandisingprograms, creative new label designsand sustainable options to best servean ever changing marketplace.

A new headquarters buildingwas constructed to helpfacilitate office and productionoperations.

It has been said that people like change, but nobody likes to be changed.

The greenhouse industry has certainly gone through change since my grandfatherproduced the first plastic plant tags 58 years ago. We have seen a change from woodstakes that were difficult to write on to high quality labels and merchandisingsignage. The rate of change has increased recently in our industry like every other,and where appropriate for our customers, we have tried to be leaders of that change.Yet, we have stayed true to the core principles that have guided us to help make ourcustomer more successful, make MasterTag an enjoyable place for our employees towork and make a fair and honest profit. Additionally, we have sought to be positivecontributors to our community and environment.

MasterTag estimates we willuse almost 1 million pounds ofrecycled plastic that could otherwise end up in alandfill. This means less use of petroleum based raw materialresources that must be extracted from the earth to produce.Can I order this new sustainable label in otherMasterTag standard shapes like the ones I currentlyuse? Since the substrates are key differentiatingelements for a an environmental statement or newprogram, the materials are available on the evo stake,DN1320, and the classic Master Tag only, at this time.

I currently buy a custom shape. Can I have thiscustom shape made of the sustainable material?Yes, this can be done within the specification of use.Custom shape non-locking stake labels can be madefrom the Recycled/Recyclable material. However, thereis currently not a sustainable option for locking labels.

I currently buy a custom design on a MasterTagstandard shape like a DN1241. Can you put thisdesign onto the new substrate? Yes, we can placeyour custom design onto the new substrate as long asit is printed on the new shape introduced for sustain-able labels.

an evolution in horticulture labeling

How much of this product is made fromrecycled material? We have engineeredthe material to be a balance of new andrecycled material. The proportion is selectedfor this application to utilize as muchrecycled material as possible whilemaintaining the label’s functionalperformance.

Are there any special requirements torecycle these labels myself? Dispose inany local recycle program that handlesrecyclable plastic.

Because of the use of recycled material,will I notice any difference in the qualityor finish of my labels? They are fullytested to provide no change in quality orperformance.

Why is the back of this label a differentcolor than it used to be? The back is thevisible part of the recycled material used inthese more earth friendly tags.

Do you offer any of your stock labels inthis recycled/recyclable material? Yes, theMaster Tag shape is now produced on thisrecycled content completely.

Will the score strength change?No, it will not. We have adjusted ourmanufacturing processes to allow usto provide the quality you havelearned to expect from our products.

Should I expect a change in mytagging efficiencies? No, thetagging machine performance shouldremain at the level of efficiency youhave come to expect from ourproducts.

RECYCLED/RECYCLABLE Stake LabelsThe plastic used in the production of this product is 100% consumer recyclable in manycommunity recycling programs. It provides growers, retailers and consumers an opportunity to participate in sustainableactions by ensuring that material is put back into the production stream, reducing the need for raw material resources.
