The Princess of Fire

There was once an incredibly rich, beautiful, and wisePrincess. Tired of false suitors who were onlyinterested in her money, she announced that shewould only marry whoever managed to present herwith the most valuable, tender, and sincere gift of all.

The palace filled up with flowers and gifts of every kind.Among all these wonderful gifts, she found a pebble, asimple dirty pebble. Intrigued, she demanded to seewhoever it was who had offered this gift. Despite hercuriosity, she pretended to be highly offended by thegift when the young man was brought before her. Heexplained it to her like this.

"Dear Princess, this pebble represents the mostvaluable thing one can give - it is my heart. It is alsosincere, because it is not yet yours, and it is as hard asa stone. Only when it fills with love will it soften and bemore tender than any other."

The young man quietly left, leaving the Princesssurprised and captivated. She fell so in love that shetook the little pebble with her wherever she went, andfor months she entertained the young man with giftsand attention. But his heart remained as hard as thestone in her hands. Losing hope, she ended upthrowing the pebble into a fire. In the heat of the fire, the sand crumbled from around it, and from out of thatrough stone a beautiful golden figure emerged. Withthis, the Princess understood that she herself wouldhave to be like the fire, and go about separating whatis useless from what is truly important.

During the following months she set about changingthe kingdom, and devoted her life, her wisdom, and herriches to separating what is truly valuable from what isunimportant. She gave up the luxury, the jewels, theexcess; and it meant that everyone in the kingdom nowhad food to eat and books to read. So many peoplepraised her and they started to call her 'The Princess ofFire'.

And as with the pebble, the fire of her presence meltedthe hardness of the young man's heart. And just as hehad promised, he became so tender and consideratethat he made the Princess happy till the end of herdays.

(*Imagine yourself as the princess in your own lifestory. What is the pebble in your life? What helps youseparate what is very important for you from what isuseless?)

WAIKOUAITI OUTDOOR BOWLING CLUB

The Waikouaiti Outdoor Bowling Club held its AGM in Juneas usual. There was a good turnout of members who wereavailable and the election resulted in the main officerscontinuing as before namely – C. Lee as President andTreasurer, J. Dempster as Vice President and E. Hammondas Secretary. The meeting included the presentation ofawards and afternoon tea.

At the time of writing it has been yet another gloriouslysunny winter’s day. Oh, if only we had enjoyed thiswonderful weather last Spring instead of the weeks ofdreich, miserable drizzle which caused us to cancel some ofour bowling days! We will resume bowling in lateSeptember/early October but until then there is some workto be done. It has been suggested that our clubhouse needsa good cleaning and re-painting so probably someone willorganise a working bee for that. Our green is still a work inprogress but is looking good and we are grateful to thoseable volunteers who come out and lend a hand and also foranyone who turns up and makes a cuppa for the workers!

The President recently received an interesting letter fromthe DCC concerned that we were maintaining our ‘lightingpoles’! After all, they are our club’s responsibility and part ofour lease agreement etc., etc. Of course, we don’t havesuch things as lighting poles overlooking our bowling green.Someone got us mixed up with the Rugby club! But younever know, if we become fanatical enough…!

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the Waikouaiti Volunteer Fire Brigade report for June 2019. We have had a busier month this month with 8 calls.• Fire x 5• Medical x 1• MVA x 2

Congratulations I would like to congratulate Anthony Nally on his 40 years’ service in theWaikouaiti Volunteer Fire Brigade and his service to the Waikouaiti community,Anthony was also Chief Fire Officer for 13 years. This is a huge commitment tobe part of a volunteer organisation for this length of time.

I would also like to thank Anthony’s family for putting up with the interruptionsto meals and family outings when the siren has gone off and Anthony has hadto stop what he is doing to go and help those in need. Well done Anthony onyour service to our community you can be proud of what you have achievedduring this time.

Electric BlanketsWorn and old electric blankets can cause an electric shock, fire and possiblyeven death• At the first sign of wear have your electric blanket checked by a qualified

electrician.• Replace your electric blanket every five years with newer heat protected

models, which are safer.• Don’t place heavy objects on the bed while the blanket is on.• Make sure the blanket is always flat on the bed and that controls or Cords

are not twisted or caught between the mattress and the base of the Bed. Twisted cords are a common cause of electric blanket fires.

• Roll your blanket when you store it for the summer. Don’t fold it.

Electrical Safety Overloaded electrical circuits, faulty electrical equipment and misuse ofelectrical equipment are common causes of fire.• If you have any concern about the performance of appliances like electric

blankets, heaters, air conditioners or fans, have them checked by a qualified electrician.

• Do not overload multiboards with double adaptors. Remember – one appliance per wall or multiboard socket.

• Ensure that leads on appliances are in good condition and not frayed.• Extension cords are not designed as permanent replacements to your

home’s internal wiring. Never put them under carpets or mats or use them while they are tightly coiled.

• Turn off and, where practical, unplug appliances when not in use.• Keep electrical appliances clear of water.• When buying second hand appliances ensure that they have been tested

by a licensed electrician or gas fitter and have been certified as safe.• Do not place fans, heaters, televisions and electrical equipment in areas

with restricted airflow as overheating may occur.

Smoke alarmsWaikouaiti Fire Brigade can supply and install smoke alarms into your home orrental property. Please give us a call on a Wednesday night to see which alarmwould suit your home.

We now have purchased smoke alarms for the elderly or those who needsupport, in the Waikouaiti area. If you think you or someone you know mayneed smoke alarms then please give us a call at the station on a Wednesdaynight to discuss the application process.

EAST OTAGO HEALTH

NEW PRIME Dedicated VehicleEast Otago Health, has been fortunate enough to recently purchase a dedicated Primary Response In Medical Emergency (PRIME) vehicle after receiving a donation from the South Link Education Trust. Our PRIME response team are called upon to respond to the more serious 111 calls within our region, which covers Hampden down to South of Karitane and inland to Macraes. Our 5 PRIME Nurses (from photo inset) are from left Briar, Clare, Liz, Jane (absent Michelle). These registered nurses are highly professional, specifically trained in PRIME’ary response.

Until now they have used their own private vehicles for responding. We are very grateful to the South Link Education Trust’s board for this donation, and wish to extend a large thank you to them in having helped the practice in providing this specific vehicle, kitted out for emergency response, including a flashing green roof light and 4 roof mounted spotlights for any night vision requirements. Flu VaccinesDue to the National Shortage of Flu Vaccines this year we now no longer have any in stock, and there are none available to order. We have been told a few pharmacies may have the Flu Vaccine in store in which case you would need to phone around to find out which ones had any available.

WAIKOUAITI COAST HERITAGE CENTRE

Now who among us does not remember the Union Steam Ship Company? Once the biggest shipping line in theSouthern Hemisphere, it was New Zealand's largest private sector employer and survived right up till the end of thetwentieth century. It began life right here in Dunedin in 1875 by Wellington born but Dunedin raised James Mills. Hewas only 28 years old. In 1869 Mills tried twice to float a Union Steam Company of New Zealand Limited, but failed toattract enough interest from local investors, until he found backing from a Scottish shipbuilder named Peter Denny.Denny agreed to invest in return for Union Steam Ship Company orders for ships built at his Dunbarton shipyard. Firsttwo Denny built ships, the Hawea and Taupo, large by local standards, arrived mid 1875 and entered service. JamesMills' Union Steam Ship Company took over the Harbour Steam Navigation Company, once owned by the late JohnnyJones and now by his son John R. Jones, who became a director of the Union Steam Ship Company along with Mills. The company was so successful it became known as the 'Southern Octopus', due to its monopoly on trans Tasmantrade.

James Mills was a valued and trusted employee of our own Johnny Jones. He started as a shop assistant and workedhis way up to managing Jones" Harbour Steam Navigation Company which served parts of Dunedin, Port Chalmers, and Oamaru, even trading with Hokitika on the West Coast. When Jones died in 1869, James Mills was his leading trustee, evidence of the high regard Jones held him in.

James Mills connection to Waikouaiti doesn't end there. He represented the district on the Otago Provincial Council in 1870 and 1873-1876, later representing Port Chalmers in Parliament from 1887-1893 when he retired. HAWKSBURY LAGOON UPDATE

I seem to have been fielding a number of emails lately, several aboutthe beautiful and elegant White Heron (Kotuku) which has made itselfat home on the Lagoon over the past few weeks, appearing in arange of different areas including nearby residential gardens. We arevery privileged.

The other emails I have been receiving were to do with last month’sPOWA article in relation to the dumping of domestic rubbish. It isheartening to hear that other local residents are appalled by suchactions and have themselves directly contacted the authorities. Thankyou for your willingness to take action and do what you can tohighlight such offensive behaviour. There is a fine of up to $400 foranyone caught dumping rubbish like this. In future if you see anyonedumping illegally take a photo of the person/s and/or vehicle licencenumber and send to the City Council.

Last week I received another email outlining exciting news for theHawksbury Lagoon. Ever since Dugald McTavish completed ourWater Management Plan in 2013 we have wanted to progress hiswork. Recently, in partnership with Ngai Tahu an application wasmade to the Otago Regional Council’s ‘Ecofund’. The application wasto enable electronic water monitoring of different areas of the lagoon. The monitoring would be continued for a number of months (if notyears) and provide us with data as to water level, water temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen levels. In time we hope to be able tomanage the three main areas of the lagoon slightly differently toencourage a wider range of birds, fish and invertebrates to thewetland. The monitoring project would provide accurate informationas to what effect any changes we make in water management wouldhave towards meeting our goals. Our successful application wasgained against fierce competition, and we hope to have themonitoring equipment in place within the next six months. Matt DaleSenior Environmental Advisor – Freshwater Management for NgaiTahu will oversee the project, in consultation with the variousagencies that have an interest in restoring the health of theHawksbury Lagoon.

The bird monitoring group met for the first time a couple of weeksago, and there is still an opportunity for anyone else interested to join. The next monitoring session will be on Tuesday 9 July at 9.30am.

Waikouaiti still needs you to represent our town onthe Waikouaiti Coast Community Board

(And you'll get paid!)

The good news is that as well as the remuneration for your hard workon our behalf and mileage expenses to travel throughout the districton Board business it is now possible to claim a childcare allowancewhich should make it easier for someone in the younger generation toconsider standing.

According to the article in the ODT, at present, some sectors ofsociety - such as mothers with young children - are under-representedaround the council table, because childcare arrangements and costsare an impediment to standing for election. A childcare allowancewould make it easier for another group of potential candidates to ''puttheir hand up''.

Youhave to be a New Zealand citizen, on the electoral roll, and to havelived at your current (Waikouaiti?) address for at least a month.19 July (Friday) Nominations open, electoral roll open for inspection16 August (Friday) Nominations close at 12 noon, electoral roll closes20 September to 12 October Voting period12 October 2019 (Saturday) Election Day–voting closes at 12 noon

COMMUNITY BOARD UPDATE

Karitane SpitAt long last work is about to start this coming weekend in building a sandretention fence on the spit. This one will be built of natural materials - driftwood, slash from the forest, etc. It is quite dramatic to see how the sand spit hasmoved in a clockwise direction from where it used to be. It will be interesting tosee what happens over coming weeks and months.

Discretionary FundingNow that we are at the start of a new financial year, our Discretionary Fundstands at $10,000. You don't have to write poetryto join East Otago Poets - all you need to do is come with a love ofideas, words and an open mind.

We believe that the world is richer for poetry and that it can be apowerful way to connect people from all walks of life, with all sorts ofpassions. So, with that in mind, we're planning exciting events withartists, musicians, writers, schools, environmentalist and historians thatbring East Otago folk together and can help make our community ahappier, more vibrant place to live.

Your task1. Identify one type of plastic that you want to cut out2. Explain what makes it difficult to give up3. Work out an alternative that gets around that problem4. COMMUNITY SPRING SHOW

The spring show this year will be held on Friday 13th and,in conjunction with the POWA community fete Saturday14th September.

This show has been an institution in Waikouaiti for wellover 100 years. Now under the umbrella of the WaikouaitiGarden Club it continues to grow and is a welcomeintroduction to spring. The 2019 schedule is almost readyfor distribution and can be sourced through the usualoutlets in Waikouaiti, Karitane, Waitati and Palmerston aswell as on the new POWA website.

Cut flowers and daffodils feature strongly but there aresections in floral art, handcrafts, vegetables and preservesas well as the popular children’s sections. Entries weredown in the children’s section last year but we are hopingthat after the show’s higher profile with the fete last yearentries will be strong.

There are many many talented people out there in ourcommunity that need that extra prompting to get them toexhibit. It is as simple as bringing it along on the Thursdayevening or first thing Friday morning (see times onschedule). It is fun and a great way to showcase yourcraft, creation or green fingers.

Although under the umbrella of the garden club the show isrun separately as a community event. We are alwayslooking for volunteers to help with setting up and runningthe two day show.
