Game 106 | Road Game 46 (27-18) | Night Game 76 (52-23) TV: ESPN | Radio: AM 570 (Eng.); 1020 AM (Span.)
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: With the July 31 trade deadline in the
rearview mirror, tonight the Dodgers begin a 10-day, nine-game road
trip with the first stop coming at the brand new SunTrust Park in
Atlanta. Los Angeles is currently riding an eight-game winning
streak, its third run of at least eight games this season, having
previously won 10 in-a-row (June 16-25) and 11 straight (July 4-19).
According to Stats LLC., the last time the club had three winning
streaks of at least eight games was 1955 (10, 11, 8). The Dodgers’
extra-inning victory on Sunday ran their record in extras to 7-2, and
was their 31st come-from-behind win. It was their Major League best
ninth walk-off triumph. Los Angeles also won its’ 52nd consecutive
game when leading at any point, extending the Major League record.
Following this series, the Boys in Blue head to New York this
weekend (3 games) and Phoenix next week (3 games).
As the calendar turns to August, there are very few teams
that can historically better Los Angeles:
MLB, Most Pre-August Wins in a Single Season
2001 Seattle Mariners 76 Lost in ALCS
1998 New York Yankees 76 Won World Series
2017 Los Angeles Dodgers 74 ???
1931 Philadelphia Athletics 74 Lost in World Series
1927 New York Yankees 73 Won World Series
*The Dodgers are 19-2 since July 4, with their two losses
coming against the Braves. SOURCE: STATS, LLC
The 14.0-game lead in the NL West represents the Dodgers’
longest since also being 14.0 games up after play on Aug.
2, 1977 over the Cincinnati Reds. The club hasn’t been
more than 14.0 games ahead since 1955.
The Dodgers own the best record in baseball with a 74-31
(.705) mark, 5.0 games better than the Houston Astros, and
also hold the best record in the National League through
105 games since the 1944 Cardinals, who went 77-28
(.733). Los Angeles is also 43 games over the .500 mark for
the first time since Sept. 27, 1962 (101-58).
The Dodgers have won 39 of 45 since June 7, which is the
best 45-game stretch in franchise history and the best in the
Majors since the 1941 Yankees, who went 39-6 from June
7-July 26. Since June 7, the Dodgers have been truly
dominant:
Dodgers’ Numbers and Ranks – Since June 7
Home Runs 85 – 1st in MLB
Team ERA 2.96 – 1st in MLB
Opponent BA .221 – 1st in MLB
R/G 5.53 – 1st in NL (2nd in MLB: HOU – 6.46)
OPS .872 – 1st in NL (2nd in MLB: HOU - .910)
SOURCE: STATS, LLC
The Dodgers are currently riding a five-game road winning
streak and their .600 winning percentage (27-18) away from
home is the second best in the NL, trailing only the
Washington Nationals (34-19, .642).
The Dodgers’ +185 run differential is the best in the Major
Leagues, 17 runs better than the Astros. The club just
finished the best July in franchise history (20-3, .870).
KENTA-SAN: Dodger pitcher Kenta Maeda tonight will make his
17th start of the season, looking to become the 14th pitcher in the
National League to record at least 10 wins this season. Since May
10, Maeda is 7-2 with one save and a 3.16 ERA (20 ER/57.0 IP) in
12 games (10 starts), while holding hitters to a .236 average. During
that span, Maeda has struck out 49 batters against 15 walks, while
posting a 1.14 WHIP. Maeda has one-career start against Atlanta,
beating the Bravos on June 3, 2016, 4-2, at Dodger Stadium.
TRADEWINDS: Yesterday, the Dodgers swung three separate
trades just before the 1:00 p.m. PT non-waiver trade deadline,
acquiring four-time All-Star Yu Darvish from the Rangers as well
as left-handed relievers Tony Watson (Pittsburgh) and Tony
Cingrani (Cincinnati) to bolster the National League’s best bullpen.
Of the three, Watson was the only player activated to the roster
today. The 32-year-old lefty was acquired for two minor leaguers
and this season he has posted a 5-3 record with 10 saves and a 3.66
ERA (19 ER/46.2 IP) in 47 relief appearances with the Pirates. Since
2013, Watson has been one of the top relievers in the NL, ranking
among the best (min. 250 IP) in wins (24, 1st), strikeout-to-walk ratio
(3.72, 290 SO/78 BB, 3rd), ERA (2.42, 4th), WHIP (1.05, 4th),
opponents’ batting average (.227, 7th), opponents’ OPS (.623, 7th)
and saves (30, 9th). The Sioux City, Iowa native was selected in the
ninth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of the University
of Nebraska and his 450 career appearances rank seventh in Pirates’
history. When Watson is activated, he will wear No. 33.
SEAGER SMOOTH: Dodger All-Star shortstop Corey Seager
went 3-for-4 with two walks on Sunday and ended up reaching base
safely in 20 of 22 games in July. In July, Seager recorded five three-
plus hit games and batted .333 (30-for-90) with 12 runs, eight
doubles, six home runs and 14 RBI along with a 1.010 OPS. He
currently leads NL shortstops in runs (68), hits (108), doubles (27),
home runs (18), RBI (53, T-1st) and walks (53, 1st ML) this season,
while ranking second in batting average (.303), on-base percentage
(.396) and slugging percentage (.531).
STILL BUZZING: As this special season rolls on, no one will soon
forget the walk-off two-run double that Kyle Farmer collected in
his first Major League at-bat Sunday night with his family looking
on. Tonight, Farmer (and fellow Georgia Bulldogs Alex Wood and
Josh Fields) returns to the Peach State a celebrated hero for
becoming the first Dodger since at least 1920 (when RBI were first
tracked) to hit a walk-off in his very first plate appearance. The last
big leaguer to collect a walk-off RBI in his big league debut was Paul
Janish on May 14, 2008, however, Janish’s run-scoring single came
in his second at-bat. According to Elias, the last player to deliver a
walk-off RBI in his first big league plate appearance was the Blue
Jays’ Tomas Perez on May 3, 1995 vs. the Chicago White Sox.
Interestingly, there were four Hall of Famers in that contest (Roberto
Alomar, Paul Molitor, Tim Raines and Frank Thomas) and six
former Dodgers (Mike Devereaux, Shawn Green, Roberto
Hernandez, Mike Huff, Robin Ventura and Devon White).
GOOD NIGHT: The Dodgers lead the Major Leagues with a 3.09
ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, a .224 opponents’ batting average and 10
shutouts (tied with STL), while leading the NL in strikeouts (991).
Los Angeles, which has allowed the fewest walks in the big leagues
this season with just 275 free passes, would be just the fourth team
to lead the league in ERA, opponents’ average and allow the fewest
walks since 1913, which is when earned runs became an official stat.

belated birthday to the club’s Director of Player Development Gabe

is in his third season with the Dodger front office.
