Material relating to Irish clergy in England in the

late Middle Ages Introduction

The following material is intended to make a contribution to the history of a

group of late-medieval Irish clergy

who spent some time during their career as

absentees in England. The first and most substantial block of material relates to

Irish clerics ordained to priesthood and other clerical orders while in England. The second, lesser corpus of material concerns those

clergy granted exemption

from late fourteenth- and fifteenth-century statutes aimed at

tackling the prob

lem of clerical absenteeism.

Irish clergy ordained in English dioceses

The loss of episcopal registers for medieval Irish dioceses, except Armagh, means that it is difficult for the historian of the medieval Irish church to find

material relating to the careers of individual Irish priests. However, some valu

able material survives in the printed Calendars of Papal Registers for the period. Additional, less well-known sources for clergy are to be found in the episcopal

registers for English dioceses. These often contain ordination lists, which form an integral part of many late-medieval bishops' registers. They are the formal

record of the diocesan ceremonies for ordination to the subdiaconate, diaconate

and priesthood and to the more important minor orders, such as the order of

acolyte. These ceremonies were usually held quarterly by bishops or their suf

fragans. The lists include information about Irish-born men who chose to be

ordained while in England. As well as the date and place of the ceremony, they record the candidate s diocese of origin and his means. In cases where Irishmen

were ordained to more than one order while in England, it can be possible to

trace their movements there.

The lists include clerics from all strata of society, from the educated who

had travelled to England to attend university at Oxford or Cambridge to

unbeneficed migrants who were being ordained as the first step in a clerical career that might offer them some economic security.

A study of English ordination lists has enabled the identification of a group of over 200 Irishmen who were ordained in England in the late Middle Ages,

primarily between the Black Death and the Reformation.1 From the point of

view of the historian interested in Irish clergy in England, the English episcopal ordination lists offer an opportunity to identify a particular group of Irishmen

abroad, specifically those who found themselves in England at an early stage in

their clerical careers and were ordained there.

Ordination lists normally record details of the men who were ordained to

the major orders -

subdeacon, deacon and priest -

and to the higher minor

orders, such as acolyte.2 Tonsure and other minor orders (janitor, lector and

exorcist) were not usually recorded, but there were occasional exceptions.

Canon law stipulated minimum ages for ordination, although papal dispensa tions often waived these requirements. The normal expectation

was that men

presenting themselves for ordination to the priesthood would be twenty-four years old. The minimum age for deacon was nineteen, for subdeacon, seven

teen, and for acolyte, thirteen. Candidates for the priesthood were

suppossed to

leave a reasonable gap between ordination to the various orders. For many in

the late Middle Ages, however, orders were received not progressively as the

candidate for priesthood reached the minimum canonical age for each, but

rather rapidly, at successive quarterly intervals, following their decision to com

mit themselves to a career in the church. They could thus be raised from lay to

priestly status in under a year.

Ordination ceremonies were conducted by diocesan bishops or their suffra

gans regularly on the four Ember days, that is, the Wednesday, Friday or Saturday

following the first Sunday of Lent, Whit Sunday, September 14 and December 12. Additional ceremonies might take place for admittance to minor orders.

The place of the celebration varied: major ceremonies might well take place in

the cathedral church of the diocese, but this was not always the case. Local

parish churches, the churches of religious houses or episcopal chapels were all

used. A bishop, however, could not ordain beyond the boundaries of his own

diocese unless he had obtained the permission of the ordinary of the diocese in

which he proposed to conduct a ceremony. None but a bishop could ordain to

the priesthood. The alphabetic lists that follow give the names of the Irish ordinands fol

lowed by their diocese of origin. Forenames have been standardised, but the

spelling of surnames is as given in the original. Details are then given of the

orders to which they were ordained while in England, including the name of

the order, the date of the ceremony, the diocese in which it took place, the place where the ceremony was held and the reference to the episcopal register,

whether manuscript or

printed. The references have been abbreviated, and the

full bibliographical details for these registers can be founded in Appendix I. At

the end of each individual's entry, the details of his 'title' or means are given.

It should be noted that candidates admitted to acolyte were not required to

produce titles: these were required by canon law only for men proceeding to

major orders. These titles were recorded mainly to protect the bishop, who was

supposed to satisfy himself that those elevated to Holy Orders had adequate means of support and would not be obliged to beg or engage in other activities

likely to bring the Church into disrepute. However, the titles, as recorded in

episcopal registers, were often broadly defined. Acceptable titles included pos session of a benefice, with or without cure of souls,3 private

income or 'patri

mony, sponsorship from a lay

or religious person or attachment to a

collegiate institution. Many men are listed with titles described as deriving from a named

religious house, and there has been debate as to the meaning of these titles.4

They do not appear to reflect a commitment on the part of the house named to

sustain the ordinand, but rather refer to an administrative procedure whereby

the house concerned certified that a candidates title was acceptable. This sort

of title came to predominate in the later Middle Ages among English candi dates and was popular with the Irish too. Unfortunately, such titles hide the real means of the candidates and make it difficult to discover how they supported

themselves. On occasion, however, we do get hints of real means, more often

for Irishmen, who, unlike their English confreres, were not

always aware of

administrative procedures and may have turned up for ordination with the

evidence of their real title rather than the certification of a religious house. We

know, for instance, that William Russell's title was granted by Gerald

FitzMaurice FitzGerald, the fifth earl of Kildare (see below). For many English ordinands, in cases where their precise origins

are known,

it is clear that they had their titles certified by local religious houses. Irishmen, on the other hand, rarely cite a religious house in Ireland for certification of

their title.5 Some English houses, however, seem to have offered certification of

titles to Irishmen seeking ordination, and this on a fairly regular basis. The

procedure is likely to have required at least one visit to the house by the

ordinand in question,

to allow an officer within the house to examine the proof

of title and to certify its adequacy.6 Among the houses most commonly cited by Irish candidates for ordination were two in London, the Augustinian priory of

Holy Trinity Aldgate (cited by seven) and Clerkenwell Augustinian nunnery (cited by nine). Religious houses in Oxford, including St Frideswide's Priory,

Rewley Abbey and Osney Abbey, were cited by a further seventeen. What is

striking is the wide geographic range of the houses cited by the Irish

ordinands.7

The history of the Irish clergy in England remains to be written, and the

ordination and orders lists are only one source for it. These could be used in

conjunction with Oxbridge collegiate material, with the papal records and with

those of central government to construct a more complete picture of Irish

clerics in England. Even on their own, the ordination lists provide a valuable

snapshot of a group of largely Anglo-Irish clergy in England at the beginning of

their ecclesiastical careers.

Section 1: Irish clergy ordained in English dioceses

Diocese of origin is

given after the name. Details are given of the order to

which the candidate was ordained, the date on which the ordination took

place, the diocese, the place of ordination and the reference sources. This is

followed by details of the title cited at ordination by the ordinand. Other

biographical details, where known, are given

in the footnotes. The references to

the episcopal registers have been abbreviated. Full bibliographical details of the

registers are given in Appendix I.

Section 2: Secular clergy exempted from late-medieval absentee acts

The 1390s saw the most forceful attempt by the government of England to

enforce legislation against absentees. Indeed, from the mid-century, successive

governments had attempted to reduce the level of absenteeism. In 1394, prior to

his first expedition to Ireland, Richard II ordered that all Irish-born living in

England were to return home by the following autumn.71 Despite the apparent

stringency of these measures, it was

possible to

gain exemptions on payment of

a fee to the exchequer. This applied to clerics as well as to

lay men and women.

The following material has been extracted from the printed patent rolls to

provide a picture of the Irish clergy, beneficed and unbeneficed, who sought to

remain in England. Members of the Irish-born secular clergy who were granted

protections to remain in England from 1391 onwards are listed. They paid 6s 8d

for the privilege,

unless another sum is given. Those who can be traced in

the episcopal ordination lists (and are therefore listed in Section 1 above) are

marked with an asterisk and shown in bold type.
