KIND OF GRAPHS

Graphs are especially useful for presenting quantitative data. So often, a graph is a visual form of data

from a table. A graph can make it easier to analyze and interpret the information you have collected. That

is, it is easier to see what is happening and what trends or patterns there are. Graphs are ideal for

communicating scientific information. Also, we can consider graphs like pictures that help us understand

amounts. These amounts are called data. There are many kinds of graphs, each having special parts. The

most common are: pie graph, bar graph, picture graph and histogram.

Underline the unknown words and look up their meanings

PIE CHART

A circle graph is shaped like a circle. It is divided into fractions that look like pieces of pie, so sometimes a

circle graph is called a pie chart. Many times the fractional parts are different colors and a key explains the

colors.

BAR CHART

A bar chart (or bar graph) is a chart with rectangular bars with lengths

proportional to the values that they represent. Bar charts are used for

comparing two or more values that were taken over time or on different

conditions, usually on small data sets. The bars can be horizontally

oriented or vertically oriented (also called column chart). Sometimes a

stretched graphic is used instead of a solid bar. It is a visual display used

to compare the amount or frequency of occurrence of different

characteristics of data and it is used to compare groups of data.

Examples

PICTURE GRAPH

A picture graph uses pictures or symbols to show data. One picture often stands for more than one vote

so a key is necessary to understand the symbols. Example:

HISTOGRAM

Histograms look similar to column graphs but are different because each

column represents a group of related data. The height of the column

shows the number of individuals counted, like a column graph. But the

columns in a histogram are touching to show that the data represented

by the columns is related.

Choosing a graph type

Each time you need to draw a graph, think about the different kinds of graphs. Decide which kind of graph

will make your data the easiest to analyze and interpret. Sometimes there are several kinds of graphs that

would be suitable. For example, usually you can use a bar graph, a column graph or a pie graph to

present the same kinds of information. A line graph and a histogram can show the same data.

1. Draw different examples of each kind of graphs.

Let’s make some graphs using a survey about food.

1. Ask the question to _60_ people

>Survey. What is your favorite kind of food?

a. Colombian food: ______________________________

b. Chinese food: ________________________________

c. Italian food: __________________________________

d. Mexican food: ________________________________

e. American food: _______________________________

2. Write the corresponding information (data)

a.________ people chose Colombian food

b. ________ people chose Chinese food

c. ________ people chose Italian food

d. ________ people chose Mexican food

e. ________ people chose American food

3. Draw the pie chart

4. Use the data to draw a bar chart

Let’s create a survey about hobbies to draw graphs

Pie Chart

1. Invent a survey (free topic) and draw two different kinds of graphs.

2. Take into account the data of the last survey and make a graph in your computer, then print the graph

and paste in your math notebook.

3. Invent a survey, create the data and draw a pie chart, and a picture graph.

ASPECTS TO EVALUATE

YES

NO

I didn’t have any difficulty along the development of the worksheet.

I developed all the activities in order and dedication.

I felt myself comfortable doing all the activities.

I reinforced and acquired new knowledge to the activities planned in the

worksheet.
