Math VocabularyBy : Kandice SmithIntegerA number with no fractional part. Includes the counting numbers {1, 2, 3, ...}, zero {0}, and the negative of the counting numbers {-1, -2, -3, ...}

Rational NumbersAny number that can be made by dividing one integer by another

Scientific Notation A method of writing or displaying numbers in terms of a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10.

Perfect squarePerfect square is a number that has a rational number as its square root

irrational numberA real number that cannot be written as a simple fraction

real numbersA number that is rational or irrational, not imaginary

Density PropertyDensity is a physical property of matter, as each element and compound has a unique density associated with it

Adjacent anglesTwo angles are Adjacent if they have a common side and a common vertex (corner point), and don't overlap

CoefficientA number used to multiply a variable

Distance FormulaThe distance formula can be obtained by creating a triangle and using the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse.

DomainThe set of all possible values of an independent variable of a function

HypotenuseIn geometry, a hypotenuse is the longest side of a right-angled triangle, the side opposite the right angle

Legs of a Right Triangle the sides opposite to the acute angles

Rational Numberany number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction p/q of two integers, with the denominator q not equal to zero

RangeThe difference between the lowest and highest values

Slope The word slope is used to describe the measurement of the steepness of a straight line. The higher the slope, the steeper the line

Scientific Notationa way of writing numbers that are too big or too small to be conveniently written in decimal form.

Prisma prism is a transparent optical element with flat, polished surfaces that refract light. At least two of the flat surfaces must have an angle between them.

Scatter plotA graph of plotted points that show the relationship between two sets of data

Slope Intercept FormEquation of a line in slope intercept form, as well as how to find equation given slope and one point.

Absolute Valuea term used in mathematics to indicate the distance of a point or number from the origin (zero point) of a number line or coordinate system.

Exponent : The representation of a number in the form: X y. where x and y are integers is called an exponential representation

Productthe result of multiplying, or an expression that identifies factors to be multiplied

Pythagorean Theroma2+b2 = c2. Note: c is the longest side of the triangle; a and b are the other two .

Acute TriangleAn acute triangle is a triangle whose angles are all acute (i.e. less than 90).

Probability something likely to happen:something that is likely to happen or exist

Factorquantity multiplied with others

Variableinconsistent or uneven in quality or performance

Evaluate find numerical value of something

Quotient result of division

Acute angleany angle that measures between 0 and 90 degrees

Congruent two triangles are congruent they will have exactly the same three sides and exactly the same three angles.

Reciprocalgiven, performed, felt, etc., in return

vertexis a special kind of point that describes the corners or intersections of geometric shapes.

polygona plane shape with straight sides.

Diameter any straight line segment that passes through the center of the circle and whose endpoints lie on the circle

sumAn amount obtained as a result of adding numbers

Dividend The amount that you want to divide up

Divisora divisor of an integer n , also called a factor of n , is an integer which divides n without leaving a remainder.

Medianthe numerical value separating the higher half of a sample, a population, or a probability distribution

Meanused quite regularly to determine final math marks over a term or semester.

ModeSimilarly, for a data set (2, 4, 9, 6, 4, 6, 6, 2, 8, 2) (right histogram), there are two modes: 2 and 6. A distribution with a single mode is said to be unmoral.

Pyramida structure whose shape is roughly that of a pyramid in the geometric sense; that is, its outer surfaces are triangular ...

Quadrilateral a polygon with four sides (or edges) and four vertices or corners.

Parallelogram A 4-sided flat shape with straight sides where opposite sides are parallel.

Rectangle any quadrilateral with four right angles

Reflectionthe change in direction of a wave front at an interface between two different media

Rate, in which two measurements are related to each other; Rate of travel, or velocity Naval rating or rate

Trapezoida convex quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel sides is referred to as a trapezoid

Cylinder a closed solid that has two parallel (usually circular) bases connected by a curved surface

Octagona regular polygon that has eight sides

Pentagonany five-sided polygon.

Right TriangleA triangle in which one angle is a right angle (that is, a 90-degree angle).

Rhombusis a simple (non-self-intersecting) quadrilateral whose four sides all have the same length.

Lowest Termswhen the numerator and denominator have no common factor other than it and itself

X-Axis and Y-AxisThe x-axis is a horizontal line and the y-axis is a vertical line
