HOW TO SOLVE PROBLEMSWhen solving time problems, it is important to remember the facts on the previous page. You need to use a number line to solve the problems, or make sure you convert your numbers so that they are in the correct format.
For example, 180 minutes is really 3 hours.
Take a look at these to help:

SOLVE THE PROBLEMS:
1. What time is 45 minutes after 11:30am?
2. How many minutes are there from 11:50am to 12:25pm?
3. What time is two and a quarter hours from 3:55pm?
4. Year 5 have a 60 minute Maths lesson every day. In one week at school, how many hours are spent in maths?
5. Charlie cycles for 2 hours. How many minutes did he cycle for?
6. Ben started revising when he got home from school. He was revising for 150 minutes. He finished at 6:30pm. When did he start revising?
7. How many minutes and hours are there from 14:42 Tuesday to 10:15 Wednesday?
8. Emily wanted to catch a bus to Bluewater. The buses came every half an hour starting at 12:00pm.
The journey from Stanford-Le-Hope to Bluewater takes three-quarters of an hour. What time should she catch the bus if she wants to be there at 3:30pm? Explain your answer.
ANSWERS 1. 12:15pm
2. 35 minutes
3. 6:10pm or in digital time 18:10
4. 5 hours (Don’t get tricked – we only go to school for 5 days a week!)
5. 120 minutes
6. 4pm
7. 19 hours and 33 minutes (definitely use a number line here! Go to the nearest hour, then to midnight, then to 10:15. Add up the amount of time jumps made)
8. She will need to catch the 14:30/2:30pm bus to get there for 15:15/3:15pm, if she gets the 15:00/3pm bus she will be too late and will arrive at 15:45/3:45pm. (Don’t forget your fraction knowledge – three-quarters of an hour is 45 minutes!)

REAL LIFE MONEY PROBLEM SOLVING
1. How much do Mr and Mrs Smith earn in a week together?
2. How much money do they have left each week?
3. Bus fares go up by £2 per day. The kids use the bus to get to school. How much does the bus cost now per week?
4. How much money do they have now?
5. If Mrs. Smith lost her job, would they have enough money?
6. What would you tell them to cut out of their budget?
Each week they pay the following bills:
Food – £95
Bus fares - £30 (£3 per child per day)
Clothes - £35
Make-up - £20
Water - £15
Rent - £95
School meals - £18
Gas and electricity - £35
Each month they pay the following bills:
Petrol - £60
TV licence - £12
Car insurance - £64
House insurance – £68
Wifi and TV - £40
Mr. Smith earns £420 per week and Mrs. Smith works part-time and earns £800 per month. They have two kids.
Use the
average four
weeks to one
month to
calculate.
ANSWERS:1. How much do Mr and Mrs Smith earn in a week together?
They earn £620 a week. To calculate Mrs Smith’s weekly earnings divide her monthly income by 4.
2. How much money do they have left each week?
Add up all their bills. Don’t forget to add the monthly bills by dividing them by 4. Their bills come to £404 a week. So £620 - £404 = £216 left over.
3. Bus fares go up by £2 per day. The kids use the bus to get to school. How much are they now?
£5 per child, per day. £5 x 5 school days = £25 x 2 children = £50 a week
4. How much money do they have now?
Bills now come to £424 (£404 - £30 + £50). So after bills they have £196 left.
5. If Mrs. Smith lost her job, would they have enough money?
No, Mr Smith earns £420 a week, so he would be £4 short on the bills and would have no money left over.
6. What would you tell them to cut out of their budget?
Clothes and makeup as they are not essential. They could just spend that amount monthly or when needed.
