Question 1 : Finances

1.1. Appendix A shows the Income and Expenditure Statement for Stellenbosch University

(US) in 2013/14. Study the table and answer the following questions:

a. Give the full amount for the following:

i. The total income in 2013

ii. Staff costs in 2014 (4)

b. Write the total expenditure in 2014 (R 3 903 621 000) in words. (3)

c. What word in the statement informs us that the US is making a profit? (2)

d. The profit is divided between two parties, namely, “Attributable to holder” and

“Attributable to non-controlling interests”. What percentage of the profit in 2014

goes to the holder? Show all working. (3)

e. The US will issue its employees with an IRP5 form. What will the employees use

this form for? (2)

1.2. Camille wants to borrow R 120 000 from the bank to start up a Hoodies business for

US. She has a loan repayment of R 2 200 per month. Answer the following questions:

a. The bank requires a 15% deposit. Calculate the deposit amount.

b. Use the deposit to show that the loan amount is R 102 000.

c. Use the Factor Values table below to determine the factor for a 5 year loan at

an interest rate of 11,5%.

Question 2 : Measurement2.1. Camille’s workroom in the ‘Hoodies’ factory requires a concrete workbench with the

following design:

b. If a worker needs at least 1 m2 space to work, would it be possible for 3

people to work at this workbench simultaneously (at the same time)?

Question 4 : Data Handling4.1. A recent study (August 2015) was carried out on 2 400 registered voters for the

municipal elections. The 2 400 adults form a sample of the wider population of

registered voters (26 333 353 people) The research produced the following key

findings:

a. What percentage does the sample form of the wider population of registered

voters? Round your answer off to 4 decimal places. (3)

b. Name two characteristics that a person, who took part in this study by answering

the questionnaire, would have (e.g. the person is at least 18 years old). (4)

c. Read through Key Finding no. 5. Write a question and answer options for a

questionnaire to the public that would provide this type of information. (4)

d. Read through Key Finding no. 6. If you had to gather any 10 South African

registered voters, will it always be so that 6 persons will disapprove of the way

their local government councillors did their jobs over the previous 12 months?

1. One in four South Africans (24%) say they attended a campaign rally in the last national election in 2014.

2. Less than half of South Africans believe that elections ensure that their views are represented (44%) or

enable them to remove non-performing leaders from office (36%). Both measures have decreased from

previous surveys.

3. Seven in 10 respondents (72%) say that elections in South Africa are “completely free and fair” or “free

and fair, but with minor problems.” Two-thirds say that elections guarantee they have genuine choices

(68%) and that votes are “often” or “always” counted fairly (66%).

4. Less than one in six South Africans say that elections are “always” or “often” marred by opposition parties

being prevented from running (16%) or voters being threatened (13%).

5. In a hypothetical national election in August-September 2015, 48% of respondents say they would vote for

the ANC and 32% for opposition parties.

6. Six of 10 South Africans (61%) disapprove of the way their local government councillors did their jobs over

the previous 12 months.

7. Support for the idea that it is voters’ responsibility to make sure that councillors do their job is still a

minority view (28%) but has doubled since 2008.
