the magazine that has little to do with surveying but lots to do with surveyors

THE VIEW FROM THE CHAIR...WELL IT’S only 5 months into my role as Chair and yet there seems to have been so much going on in such a short time. Outside of London, Manchester is the most active matrics branch in the UK and it certainly feels that way. My official duties kicked off shortly after my appointment with the annual Pub Golf – an event from which I still bear very vivid scars from a very painful 24 hour hangover! I confess to remembering little about the event but seem to recall everyone was in a very jovial mood. I do, however, recall that it will be a very very long time before I can ever face a pint of cider again, if indeed at all!

June saw the Castlefield Cruise take place on a disappointingly damp typical British “summer” evening. However, the on-board bar got everyone into good spirits and the mood kept flowing as the festivities spilt into Dukes ’92 once the boat had docked (though yet again my memory fails me at this point….there seems to be a recurring theme here…!!).

Enter July and the clay pigeon shoot. My enthusiasm for this event was not particularly high as I crawled out of bed at some ridiculously early hour prior to 8am on the Saturday morning but on arrival at Cloudside Shooting Grounds you can’t fail but to be blown away by the breathtaking views of the surrounding Peak District. The arrival of bacon and egg butties and hot coffee soon improved the mood (and energy levels!) before we were led down to the shooting range. I surprised myself by making a surprisingly good start with several accurate shots which blew the clays to smithereens (although I confess much of this had to do with visualising the clay as an ex-boyfriend). However, sadly old age got the better of me – aiming a rifle is none too comfortable while wearing glasses and when I abandoned my visual aids my failing eyesight took hold as shotgun pellets rained over the High Peak countryside!!

By the time this goes to press the Summer Social will have taken place (another hangover no doubt), as will the Golf Competition (where I will probably end up being shouted at by some harlequin designed jumper adorned, four-plus wearing old bloke for teetering about the green on high heels) and the autumn CPD programme will be well underway.

Of course, then comes the Ball on 16th October and I hope to see many of you there for what promises to be a fun filled night (I see another hangover looming….). We have got some terrific auction and raffle prizes for the night and I really hope we can have a successful night raising much-needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Relief’s Manchester Million Appeal. ■

The witching hour draws nearerPREPARATION FOR this year’s Charity Ball are now well underway. The event will take place at the Jarvis Piccadilly Hotel on Saturday October 16th. As usual the dress code is Black Tie or Fancy Dress with this year’s theme being “Halloween” so there is still plenty of time to start planning those costumes, as they’ll be prizes for the best fancy dress!

The Ball is being kindly sponsored once again by Judd Farris and Windmill Demolition Co. and the committee are grateful to them for their continued generous support of this event.

All proceeds will go towards Macmillan Cancer Relief’s Manchester Million Appeal. who will invest the money raised to support local projects. Over 13,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in Greater Manchester each year. Macmillan Cancer Relief would like to be able to offer help and support to everyone who needs it, from diagnosis throughout their illness.

However at the moment they cannot meet the increased demand for their services. The Manchester Macmillan Million Appeal has recently been launched to raise funds to extend and enhance local cancer care in Greater Manchester.

There will be a Charity Auction on the night, with one of the Lots being the chance to “blow up a building!” kindly donated by Control Demolition. In addition there are numerous other prizes available for grabs in the raffle so remember to bring those business cards with you.

Anyone wishing to book tickets or a table should contact the Chairman, Louisa Brown at Roberts & Roberts on 0161 477 4212 or [email protected]

Last year’s event raised the phenomenal sum of £10,000 for Christie’s Against Cancer so let’s see if we can do as well this year. ■

Sunny Manchester hosted this year’s finals as last years winners Jones Lang Le Salle were the representatives of RICS matrics Greater Manchester. They were joined by another 10 teams from across the country who had won their Local or Regional Competition (including Pinepeak of Manchester), at the JJB Soccer dome at the Trafford Centre on Saturday 17th July and despite three weeks of solid rain the weather decidedly improved for our guests visit.

The competition was a well fought and a surprisingly sporting contest given the fact that the title of National Champions was at stake. The competitors lined up as follows:-

Harry Taylor & Co Scotland

Pinepeak Manchester

Sanderson Weatherall North East

Gerald Eve Birmingham

Durnien Northern Ireland

GVA Grimley Bristol

Cooke & Arkwright South Wales

Pinders BOB

East of England East of England

Cumbria Cumbria

Jones Lang Le Salle 2003 National Winners

The top two teams from the group stages went through to the semi finals which saw Pinepeak take on Cooke & Arkwright of South Wales and Durnien of Northern Ireland take on last years winners Jones Lang Le Salle.

Pinepeak progressed winning through the dreaded penalty shoot out with Durnien progressing through an injury time winner 2-1.

The final as always was a tight affair with the trophy finally lifted aloft by Durnien from Northern Ireland winning 1-0.

RICS matrics National 5-A-Side Finals

One or two beers were consumed in the hostelries of Manchester and the Winners were last seen in Branagans heading for a group of ladies on a hen night dressed as bunny rabbits. As Elmer Fudd once said “I’m hunting wabbit”.

RICS matrics would like to thank everyone who attended and RICS matrics Hon Tresurer Phil Cooke of Roberts & Roberts and Hayley Britton from the RICS matrics Office in Great George Street for organising this years event.

AT 6PM on 11 June 2004 RICS matrcs Greater Manchester set sail from outside Castlefield Arena with decked with surveyors and other reprobates on the second annual RICS matrics Greater Manchester cruise.

The social event, kindly sponsored by Judd Farris and catered for by the management of City Centre Cruises navigated the waterways of the Bridgewater Canal towards Pamona Dock where a lock connection later and a height differential of some 8 meters we were on the River Irwell, soon to arrive at the once decadent industrial hinterland of Salford Quays.

The graceful movement of the vessel was complimented by the artful backdrop of the Lowry Theatre, which signified the return to

Questions & Answers…

MEMBERS OF the Committee frequently get asked the following questions, so here’s something which may help:

Q: How do I receive details of matrics events in the Manchester area?

A: send your full contact details through to the Branch Secretariat, Gill Edmeston ([email protected]) and ask her to add you to the Manchester Branch mailing list

Q: Some of my colleagues receive details of events by e-mail. How can I arrange to be added to the list?

A: In addition to the branch mailshots which are sent out by post by the Branch Secretariat, the current Chairman, Louisa Brown, regularly e-mails details of events. If you would like to be added to her list please contact Louisa at [email protected]

Q: Are CPD certificates issued for attending matrics seminars?

A: No. All matrics events are run and organised by volunteers who dedicate as much time as they are able to, in addition to undertaking their normal day-to-day working roles. Issuing CPD certificates would simply take up too much time. Instead a record is kept of who has attended each CPD event.

Q: I attended an event 2 weeks ago but have still not received a VAT receipt?

A: VAT receipts are usually issued by the Branch Secretariat after an event has taken place and once all cheques have been banked. Cheques are not banked until after an event to ensure that they can be returned in the unlikely event that it becomes necessary to cancel an event. VAT receipts will only be issued to those people who request them on the booking forms. On average we have over 100 attendees at the majority of our events so please be patient – if you have requested a VAT receipt you will get one in due course! ■

Ahoy There!

Castlefield. The last hour and a half was spent in reverse scenery for the nautical ensemble. Judging by the condition of those firmly attached to the bar the reversion had already truly set in.

RICS matrics Greater Manchester would like to thank the participants for their attendance, Judd Farris for their sponsorship and Rebecca Best of Edmond Shipway for her organization. ■
