Endangered Animal: Ostrich
Impact on other organisms, the environment and us.
• The Ostriches are the largest of the birds standing at 8ft tall and weighing around 280lbs.
• Living in the dry African grasslands where they have to run many miles for food.
• Ostrich’s have many enemies including Jackals and Hyenas. Around only 15% are likely to survive.
African Wildlife Foundation
• The African Wildlife Adoption Center cost is 25 dollars to adopt an ostrich.
• The money provided to the foundation goes to help protect the ostrich population in Africa.
• The foundation helps to keep ostrich eggs from being hunted.
• After adopting the species from African Wildlife Adoption Center, they follow you up by sending you information on the animal and there progress.
Ostrich Characteristics
• Ostrich is one of the largest birds on the earth.
• They will feed on grasses, shrubbery, berries, seeds an also small insects.
• Can be up to 8 ft tall.
• Weigh between 240 and 300 pounds.
• Life span around 40 years.
• Found mostly in northern Africa.
• Ostrich feathers very popular.
Why Ostrich’s are Endangered
• In the 18th century, ostrich feathers were so popular in ladies fashion that the ostrich disappeared from all of northern Africa because of hunting.
• In 1838 Ostrich farming began decreased the number of ostrich’s.
• Today Ostriches are farmed for their feathers, meat, skin and eggs.
