Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
0:00:00.8 MATT PRADOS: Alright, hello. Welcome everyone. This is
Matt Prados, CEO of Chiro Traffic and today I get t o
interview another chiropractic superstar. Uh, I’ll
tell you it’s, it’s not often in life when you meet
somebody, and just instantly uh, you jump in and yo u
go I like this guy he, there’s something about him and
then you start, I started talking to Dr. Matt. The
more I got to know him the more he impressed me doi ng
uh, really what he does to give back to the profess ion
and the uh, levels of his success that he’s been ab le
to achieve in his practice.
0:00:29.74 So today what we’re going to do is bring is bring out
Dr. Matt Hubbard and get into it and find out, you
know, what it is he does and how he runs his office ,
how he runs his life, how he creates the success he
creates and uh, hopefully uh, listeners, you guys c an
pick up some jewels here and apply them in your lif e
and achieve the success that you want.
0:00:45.9 So, Dr. Matt Hubbard, welcome to the call .
DR. MATT HUBBARD: Hey, thanks for having me Matt.
Uh, I’m excited to be here, I can’t wait to uh, hea r
how this thing unfolds.
0:00:55.4 MATT PRADOS: Yeah, let’s jump into it. Let’s see
what’s going on. So, uh, we, w e first met a few months
ago and we ended up talking and uh, you said someth ing
that was interesting to me, which was uh, uh, you g et
so many new patients that you’ll actually refer som e
of them out to other chiropractors in the area.
3
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
Now this is a, a something very, very rare I would say
in today’s economy and with uh, 99% of the
chiropractors out there. So why don’t you tell us a
little bit about uh, your practice, your life, how you
put it together to uh, be able to have that type of
success.
0:01:27.6 DR. MATT HUBBARD: Wow. I got to narrow it down, huh?
0:01:32.5 MATT PRADOS: That’s right.
DR. MATT HUBBARD: Let’s see. Yeah, we did meet a
couple of months ago and uh, I remember saying that I
won’t want to be, you know, that I will always
receive, I do not ever want to shut that down, I wi ll
always receive new patients and I can always see, s ee
and serve more.
But, I specifically, what happens is I really beli eve
in uh, writing down the people that I want to take
care of. Meaning what does my ideal patient or
practice member look like.
0:01:58.7 And some people have maybe heard that, bu t they think
it’s kind of funny, so they don’t really do it. And I
take that in all seriousness. And so, what happens is,
just like my qualities that I was looking for in my
wife, I wrote down, I prayed about them, I read the m,
I knew who I was looking for in a woman and when I met
her I immediately knew.
0:02:16.5 So I know what I do want and I know what I don’t want.
4
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
The same principles that I applied when I was looki ng
in search for my wife and hopefully she was searchi ng
for me, is the same principles I do in practice.
Meaning, I, I do have patients that come in. And w here
I can always see more new patients, I’m very um,
serious and structured about the patients that I wi ll
accept under care in my office.
0:02:40.7 And because I have set such a high standa rd, I can
maintain a high energy and a fun filled practice
exactly the way I want, because I don’t have
negativity in there. I don’t have complainers. I do n’t
have whiners. I don’t have people that are sucking the
life out of me.
Which is, what I realized in chiropractic is they will
take anyone because there’s such a lack mentality,
that they have no standard set for themselves. So
there is no standard then set for their practice.
Which means there’s no standard which their team ca n
play at a higher level.
0:03:11.8 And uh, I just know that I don’t want to be a one hit
wonder. I want a big practice one day and, or I see 80
new patients or whatever the case may be. If I see 20
new patients in a month, but they are high quality,
referred patients that want to be there, want to
participate in health, guess what? My life is so mu ch
more enriched and I get pumped to be there on Monda ys
and I am bummed when it’s Fridays.
0:03:37.2 If you ever come to my practice and you a sk one of my
5
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
patients what my favorite day in the office is, eve ry
single one of them unequivocally will tell you,
Mondays are my favorite days in, in the practice,
’cause I am rocking and ready to set the tone for t he
week.
Most mentality is Mondays are the worst day for
everybody. Well, that’s why I’ve reversed that in m y
practice and so my patients have something to look
forward to.
0:03:58.0 And so I’ve just set this standard that w hen I have
someone that comes in that I know isn’t the right f it,
I will let them know that there is a chiropractor o n
any, every corner and I know some great chiropracto rs
right down the street, that this office isn’t the
perfect fit for them. But I know one of these offic es
will. And I personally call them and talk to the
doctor and send them right over there.
0:04:18.5 Now, sometimes I’ve had people come back and say, “I
want to know you know, what it was, why’d, your
referred me out?” And I’m, I’m totally honest with
them. And I’ve had, I had one lady that was, had a
real negative attitude to everything and I just tol d
her that this wasn’t the office for her. She was al l
offended and said she’ll change her attitude. She
realized that she has been that way for so long and
it’s ruined relationships, it’s ruined her health,
it’s ruined everything that she’s willing to change ,
that she will be coachable and she didn’t want to
leave my practice.
6
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
0:04:43.2 And so, I was like…
MATT PRADOS: Wow.
DR. MATT HUBBARD: Wow, alright, you know what? I
respect that, I mean you don’t tell a 60 year old
woman that without her telling you what’s on her mi nd.
And I said “absolutely”. And she changed her whole
life and my team loves it when she comes in.
0:04:58.7 So I, that’s happened a lot and, and I th ink what was
happening at the time is, I had heard that from a
mentor that, you know I went to a seminar, I heard
that, I am like, yeah I am going to try that. And w hen
I let my first patient go, like saying this wasn’t the
office. I sat there going, “What did I just do? Oh my
gosh! What did I just do?”
0:05:15.9 But I knew it was the right thing to do. And when she
walked, you know, walked out the door my uh, team w as
like, “What happened?” and I told them and I said,
“We’re setting a, a new bar and it is going to be s et
high.”
0:05:25.2 Literally, that day I had four new patien ts call and
schedule within an hour! Just totally, their intere st
was random. But I knew it’s because I did the right
thing. And those four new patients were amazing and
ever since then I have tracked it.
I just sent someone, someone out last week to anot her
practice; my buddy’s practice is right down the
street. And the other night at CORE he thanked me,
7
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
“Say hey, thanks for the referral.” And I said,
“Absolutely.”
0:05:48.8 You know, and, and that’s what it’s about , because not
everyone’s going to resonate with me or my practice ,
but I want to make sure the people that do, we are
always in excellence.
And the number one thing I hear from all my patien ts,
I do surveys, I do everything, is they say “This
place, when we pull in the parking lot we’re lookin g
forward to walking in the door, because there’s
something special about it.”
0:06:09.5 And the only difference is I’ve set a hig h standard of
the people that want to participate in health care. So
I know it’s kind of a long answer, but it, you know I
think it’s just good to clarify ‘cause you know, I
don’t send all new patients out the door. I love
receiving them. It’s just gotta be, it’s gotta be t he
right new patient.
0:06:22.8 MATT PRADOS: Absolutely. Now, that’s, that’s
incredible advice and you know, obviously uh, we’ve
heard things like that before in this industry and
other industries.
Let’s get down to some brass tax. How did you actu ally
come up with what your ideal practice member was? A nd
uh, why don’t you roll through the exact specific,
perfect practice member for you, so that our listen ers
uh, understand, when you say “the bar is set high”
what you actually set it at.
8
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
0:06:47.4 DR. MATT HUBBARD: Yeah, Okay, well that’s great.
Well I, just like I believe people change, you know ,
I’ve changed. So when I was young in practice of
course I wanted to take care of the athletes and the,
you know that’s where I was at the time.
But to where I’m at today, my ideal patient is som eone
that is, I don’t care where they’ve been in their p ast
as far as health, but they’re willing to draw a lin e
in the sand that’s, that’s it, I’m going to do
whatever it takes to be healthier in the next five
years than I am this year.
0:07:15.5 So not only one, uh, right now I’m attrac ting
families, especially, you know I have a lot of moms
that come in, that just say, “that’s it, this year is
than next year. I want to commit to it, I am commit ted
to bringing my husband in to get checked.”
If I, if they have kids they’re committed to bring ing
their kids in and getting checked and they’re
participating, one year at a time, ‘cause they know
it’s not a one hit wonder, or a quick fix and they
will engage on whatever it is.
0:07:40.9 Whether it’s um, emotional, physical or c hemical
stress in their life, they’re willing to write down
their commitments, because I have a commitment page .
They’re willing to dedicate time, repetition and
energy.
0:07:52.8 And I go through what those three, those three things
9
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
are with them. And I, you know my team knows, “time ”,
“repetition” and “energy”. They’re going to dedicat e
some time to their health. They’re going to put ene rgy
into it. And they know that it’s going to take
repetition, whether it’s inside or outside the offi ce.
My “ideal patient” is, the forefront of their mind
it’s not the five minute they are in my practice, i t’s
the 23 hours and 55 minutes, the rest of the day th at
they are consciously aware of habits they either ne ed
to break, change or slowly let unwind in their life ,
to create new ones.
0:08:20.3 And you know what? It, it overflows into not just
chiropractic and health, their whole life starts to
change. So it’s not just a one dimensional deal, an d,
and we go there, right off the bat.
So we have a list of, you know, we want patients t hat
“stay, pay and refer” and that in their first two
weeks, we know immediately how committed they are.
0:08:41.0 You know, you can, we, and during the res ults of our
tests or report of findings, whatever you call it, we
get the commitment just to see where they’re at.
Now I’m not into to “scare care”, I’m not into uh,
“telling them what they want”. I literally believe,
people are intelligent. People don’t like to be sol d
to or manipulated or, you know, kinda maneuvered. T hen
just say, “Hey my job is easy, this is all the thin gs
that I want to share with you about chiropractic, y our
job is the tough one, you tell me what you want to do
10
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
about it.”
0:09:08.2 I put it all on them. I want them to make the
decisions, almost like a take-away. And I said, “Yo u
let me know how you want to participate and if this is
the office, if things that I said that make sense t o
you, this is, these are the different things that w e
can do to operate in that.”
0:09:21.7 And they always go, “Yeah that’s what I w ant.” And if
finances are ever a problem, I always ask them why
they made their choices.
Finances are always usually number one issue if
someone doesn’t take full commitment to care. And I
always say, “You know, we have not spoken about
finances and in a perfect world if finances weren’t an
issue what would you do?”
0:09:39.9 “Oh, I’d do this for sure.” “Well great, let’s act as
if and let’s do what you want, not what you don’t
want. And now let’s get you on a care plan that we can
work for you, ‘cause any care in this office is bet ter
than no care. You let me know. Maybe you’re going t o
have to make some sacrifices for what you’re willin g
to do.”
0:09:51.7 So it’s people that are willing to sacrif ice their
latte for better health care in the future.
So you know what, it’s just really communicating I
think on a different level. But what I want, are
people that are committed. And not because I told t hem
11
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
they’re committed but they told me, they’re committ ed.
Is that good?
0:10:08.9 MATT PRADOS: That’s incredible. Absolutely love it.
Those, those are definitely great words of advice t hat
uh, our listeners can live by.
Now let me ask you this. You know there was, you k now
you, you’ve been in practice for, you know, so many
years, there was, you know, points where you didn’t
have these viewpoints. There was, there’s now
obviously now these points where you do. What uh, w hat
was the important factor for you to be able to expa nd
and grow uh, as an individual and as a practice own er
to allow you to achieve this type of success?
0:10:37.0 DR. MATT HUBBARD: Man that’s uh, that’s awesome. The
number one thing for me is cutting off um, dead wei ght
in my life. Meaning, I love chiropractors, I love
hanging out with them. But the truth is, I won’t ha ng
out and I won’t uh, participate or be around
complainers, whiners. Anything that I don’t tolerat e
as a, a practice member or a patient, I’m not going to
tolerate in a chiropractor. And I just believe that
when we sit around and keeping talking about the sa me
thing all the time, we end up, that mentality chang es
us.
0:11:07.8 I mean sitting on the board of the CCA an d being
involved with that, doing CORE for so long, I can t ell
you that the number one thing I hear all the time i s,
“You chiropractors just love to talk about all the
12
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
‘can nots’”. I want to talk to, to all the young
people that are out of school, still fresh and
passionate. And then I want to find out the docs wh o
have been in practice 25 years plus, that are still on
fire and passionate.
0:11:28.1 Anything in between to me doesn’t make se nse. I don’t
want to hear anybody about a struggle, ‘cause I kno w
it’s, it’s out there, but I don’t need to hear abou t
it. I want to hear about the people that aren’t
struggling. What in my philosophy, what you focus o n
expands.
I only want to hear the best of the best. So I choo se
to listen to things differently. And ever since I c ut
out dead weight and I, I had a mastermind group wit h
three of my buddies that I went to college with, an d I
love them as friends. But we were having breakfast
burritos, I’ll never forget, every, you know on Sol ano
Beach, every uh, you know, Tuesday morning and it g ot
depressing. And one day I felt like, it was probabl y a
God thing you know, but I just felt like, you know
what, I got to be honest with these guys.
0:12:05.2 So I went up there and I said, “Hey, you know I don’t
mean to hurt your feelings, but I’m not coming on
Tuesday mornings anymore.”
And you know, I’ve said this before but, and they’ re
like, “What do you mean?”
And I said, “’Cause all we do is complain about what
we’re not getting, instead of what we need to get,”
and I said, “I am changing my thing as of today.”
13
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
0:12:20.9 And from that point on, my whole practice shifted. And
I, I flew around; I spent a lot of money. People
called me a seminar junkie the first two years of
practice. And it wasn’t ‘cause I needed seminars, i t’s
like I was scouting out the best of the best at eve ry
seminar.
12:34.6 And I, you could see them tangibly wal king around. The
way they held themselves, I would want to go hang o ut
with them. I’d want to go and listen to them. I’d, I’d
be like the kid next to them. I probably looked lik e a
stalker. But I always just wanting to glean somethi ng
from them.
0:12:48.0 Just like how I met you Matt, I was looki ng at
companies that had a glow about them. That somethin g
was different. That there is an air, there, there i s a
confidence. That they wanted to help chiropractors go
to the next level. And I immediately saw you and I’ m
like, dude, that, that company right there, I’m
watching them.
0:13:03.0 You know, and so, it’s always having that mindset of
awareness of “who’s doing it”, “who’s not”. I don’t
want to be with the “who’s nots”. I want to be, I
want to be with the “who’s doing it”.
MATT PRADOS: Absolutely.
You know a lot of people “talk about it”. But not a
lot of people are “being about it”. And I’ve learne d
that I want to “be about it” and “being about it” t o
14
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
me is getting around the people that are, that are
“doing it”, so…
0:13:23.4 MATT PRADOS: Right and uh, obviously thank you for
those kind words.
0:13:26.4 Now the “dead weight” uh, wouldn’t just b e
chiropractors, it would be anything and everything in
your life that would be negative or uh, not positiv es,
right?
0:13:35.1 DR. MATT HUBBARD: Ab- Absolutely, absolutely. It’s
like, how often do we do spring cleaning? You know we
clean out our closet. We clean out our car once in a
while. You know, we get it detailed and we feel so
much better about it.
You have to do that in our life too. Even with, ev en
with people. But what I’ve learned is us as
chiropractors, ‘specially, in, in what I do and the
people I surround myself with, sometimes we care so
much about what other people think ‘cause we have t hat
“servant mentality” that we stop caring about what we
think.
0:14:02.4 We put everybody else’s needs before ours and we
realize, “You know what? No, I need to be a little
selfish with my time, a little selfish with who I a m
and who I hang out, out with, because I’ve got to
serve so many people”.
0:14:14.2 And the more selfish you are, in like pro tecting
yourself from the you know, people that are drainin g
15
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
you, the more people you’re going to see because yo u
have more energy, more love, more stuff to give the m.
And I think that it’s so important that we just kin d
of skip around like a little “foo foo”. But you kno w
what, I’ll take that 20% metro and turn it into
something good.
0:14:31.5 MATT PRADOS: That’s right. I love that uh, “spring
clean your life” guys. I love that uh, that concept .
Get rid of dead weight and uh, get on with the
positives and really be able to influence lives.
Now, Dr. Matt when you talk about uh, influencing
others and helping others, it uh, it’s expanded fro m
just your practice and your practice members uh, to
now you’re actually running a group called CORE.
0:14:52.7 For our listeners that don’t know what CO RE is why
don’t you uh, give us the low down on, on what that
group is and what it’s all about?
0:15:01.7 DR. MATT HUBBARD: So Okay. The run down, the brief as
it gets here, as good as it gets, is CORE stands fo r
“Chiropractors on the Road to Excellence”. And how it
even birthed was, I knew some friends that were goi ng
to different philosophy groups.
There was COPS in Chicago. There was all these lit tle
ones, Peter and Patty out in, where is it, shoot,
Boston, way out on the other side somewhere over
there, Massachusetts, I can’t, who, wherever, the N ew
England Patriots are from. I am a San Diego Charger s
fan. So I mean, way over on the other side. And the n
16
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
Randy Bays up in Washington.
0:15:31.7 So these, these people had some really in credible,
inspiring groups that I started going around and
interviewing, and watching. And, and I was in San
Diego and I had some great mentors at the time and I
was asking, “What about this?”… “Oh we had this”, “ We
had that”, they all fell by the wayside. I’m like
“huh”.
0:15:50.0 So I went and interviewed everybody. Foun d out what
worked, what didn’t work, where the trials and
tribulations were and I said, “That’s it, I am
starting it.”
I could not handle another depressing state
association meeting as much as I believe in support ing
state associations. At the time, I, I couldn’t,
couldn’t handle another meeting. I felt depressed w hen
I left and I said, “That’s it, I want something.” A nd
my theme is “move, touch and inspire.” That’s reall y
what CORE’s theme has always been.
0:16:13.2 Is to, you know like that old BJ quote, “ Coming
together is a beginning, keeping together is a, you
know is progress, and working together is success.”
0:16:20.3 And I said, “That’s it. I’m doing it”. An d uh, myself
and a few others kicked this thing off. And then I’ ve
been running it for the last 5 years solid. We’ve b een
going since 2003. We’ve never missed a month, we’ve
been solid. We’ve had so many speakers.
17
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
But here’s the bigger, here’s the bigger thing. I’ ve
had chiropractors pull me aside saying they are
shutting down their doors, they were giving up and
they came and then something sparked on the inside of
them.
0:16:43.4 I had a gentleman that was sleeping in hi s car, sent
his family to live with his parents and was taking
showers at the gym and going to his office. He was on
his last thread, and some CORE doctors poured into him
and he turned it around, got his practice back on i ts
feet and got his family back.
0:16:59.0 And to me that’s, that’s what you know CO RE’s about.
CORE’s about coming together to help each other fin d
CA’s, to help each other, it’s about camaraderie, i t’s
about “iron sharpens iron”, it’s about uh, holding
each other accountable, doing chiropractic with
integrity. It’s about coming there getting dipped,
it’s not about the speakers, even though they’re
incredible, you know. But it’s about coming togethe r
in a safe place to help each other, you know, get t he,
get the wheels hitting the asphalt and moving forwa rd.
0:17:25.2 And the biggest thing now is we’re doing huge
community events. We threw, last year, our first go lf
charity tournament. It was so powerful.
This year we’re doing our second annual golf chari ty
tournament. We’re sponsoring main events. We blocke d
uh, Kaiser from their Thrive campaign at a major go lf
show function and we became the main sponsors. And we
used CORE doctors just to rally everybody under one
18
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
auspice.
0:17:48.3 Now we’re going to do a major um, campaig n on
billboards. It’s going to be San Diego top doctors,
who all ran through CORE.
0:17:57.8 So CORE becomes a vehicle to do things to gether on a
big level. So we can, you know, pool our money, poo l
our resources and make big things happen.
So that’s, that’s what I love about CORE. It’s lik e
one big family. I know every doctor that’s a part o f
it. I know the ones that participate full on. I kno w
the ones that come and go and they’re you know,
they’re there for the speakers, and that’s fine too .
But it’s really about doing bigger things, in every
city.
0:18:21.1 My goal is to have a, you know, really 10 0 this year,
but I’d love to get 1,000 COREs nationwide and that ’s
my 2020 vision. So by the year 2020 we have 1,000
COREs with the membership of 200 doctors on average
and we can just do big things.
0:18:38.4 So could you imagine that sort of platfor m and that
power and all the money goes back into the communit y,
raising money for Oklahaven and who knows what.
0:18:46.7 But I mean, the vision’s big. And I try t o keep a
cutting edge, do videos, we have a YouTube called C ORE
San Diego, it’s a channel. People can stay updated.
You know, so it’s just, it’s fun. It’s not taking
ourselves too serious, but it is about leadership.
19
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
‘Cause who’s going to carry the next, I mean you kn ow
all the leaders in the profession.
MATT PRADOS: Yup.
MATT HUBBARD: What’s the next generation? Who is the
next generation?
0:19:07.3 They call the generation that’s being rai sed up right
now of kids, the “hero generation”. Why can’t
chiropractors be the “hero generation” to health ca re?
And so that’s my big auspice thing with it.
0:19:18.0 MATT PRADOS: Yeah, that’s incredible. I’ll tell ya,
you know, CORE, uh, you know really the concepts an d,
and the fact that you uh, basically are donating yo ur
time and not charging, you know, not making it some
sort of practice management group, but just giving
back to the profession is, is obviously very, very
impressive and very noble.
0:19:35.0 Now you talked about all these COREs, how would
someone who doesn’t have a CORE in their area, how
would they open one? What would they do? How do the y
contact you?
0:19:44.5 DR. MATT HUBBARD: Yeah, that’s awesome Matt. Thanks
for asking. You know that, honestly this is what I
tell people. Make sure your practice, there’s two
things that happens. When you become a leader and y ou
start doing things like CORE it does stir, it does
stir yourself, it stirs the “vacuum” as I call it a nd
your practice gets busier just by serving and pouri ng
20

back into something you love.
0:20:02.5 Um, that’s what people don’t understand. They think,
“Oh, it’s going to take away from my practice.” No, it
might actually stirs it. But I need you to have a
philosophically based practice, because you can’t h ave
a pain practice, even though I, you can have whatev er
practice you want.
0:20:17.2 CORE is about “routed in philosophy”. So if you’re
going to lead it you, you know, let’s start with,
let’s, let’s be in congruency with that first.
Because, it is based off the principles of
chiropractic, you know, but and I want you to have a
successful practice.
0:20:30.2 Success in your mind means that, you, you know,
there’s balance, you spend time with your family, t hat
you’re doing well enough, that, this isn’t going to
be, you know, shooting yourself in the foot.
We want people to lead this that can “inspire and
touch” people. All the basics, listen I have every
domain name bought probably in the United States fo r
CORE. Putting a website up is already done. Talking to
you, about you know, making it happen on a bigger
level with that and getting CORE out there is proba bly
what I need to do.
0:20:55.9 But all of the backdoor and the backe nd stuff is
already laid out for the foundation of CORE. If you
want to get involved, you can just go to CORE San
Diego, there’s a “contact me” on there. You can jus t
21
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
send me a direct email.
0:21:07.5 But really look at the DNA. You know, loo k, read the
CORE site from top to bottom. Look at the videos,
they’ve done, been videos for the last year and a
half. Look at current events. Look, just see if
something resonates on there with you. And if it do es,
and you feel like you want to bring chiropractors
together in your community, I always recommend find ing
one or two like-minded, or two to three like-minded
individuals that can help you, because it takes the
team, a team to really get the traction going.
0:21:33.1 Once you kick this off and after three mo nths of doing
this, it runs itself. All you got to be is a little
organized but everything is done for you. It’s not
complicated. It’s not tough. It’s just about laying
the foundation, which has already been laid and hav ing
the inspiration to inspire others with the “why”, w hy
do chiropractors need to be there. And if you can h it
the switch in your town, yeah it’s you know, it’s
awesome.
0:21:56.1 MATT PRADOS: That’s great. That‘s just so incredible
that you can think of, you know having 1,000 groups ,
like the one in San Diego out there, really inspiri ng
and, and changing lives. Because you, it’s so obvio us
with you Dr. Matt that it’s not just about uh,
subluxation, it’s about flourishing in life and
really, you know 100% health, uh, success and
happiness through every aspect of your life.
0:22:18.4 Uh, you know I see on the social media, I see you
22
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
spreading positive messages. What, what uh, what wo uld
you say uh, to our listeners who maybe, you know,
don’t have that much positivity in their, in their
life?
They do not have a CORE, you know, what suggestions
could you give them on uh, you know, maybe they’re a
little over weight right now. Maybe they’re not eat ing
as healthy, maybe their practice is a little rough.
What, what would be the first thing you would tell
them to do in order to get on the road to success?
0:22:46.9 DR. MATT HUBBARD: You know, to me, energy is
everything. Meaning if you are feeling out of shape
and not good about yourself and all that stuff, wel l
that, that has to do with dietary choices. I mean i t
all starts with the little things.
I literally, literally just went on a fast. You kn ow,
a 10 day fast, and got just a huge amount of energy
back. That abled me to start thinking bigger, have
bigger visions to do the things that we want.
0:23:10.8 I have an incredible pastor. I actually h ad him speak
for CORE last month on leadership. So I mean I
download his sermons all the time, just to keep me
juiced. Whatever it is for you, if you know someone
that you, that someone inspires you, download their
stuff.
0:23:25.5 I mean Demartini, that guy. Maybe you lis ten to him he
is, he’s inspiring. But there are people in their l ife
that they sat down and wrote a list, that lifts the m
23
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
up, that inspires them, that stokes them in some wa y.
They just need to get their fire stoked.
0:23:39.1 The best way I can explain it to you, is if there was
an ember that fell out of a fire place, it will glo w
and it will burn okay. But it‘s going to go out pre tty
quickly if it’s sitting in front of the fire. But i f
you grab that little shovel, grab that little ember
and threw it back in the fire, guess what? It’s goi ng
to light right back up.
0:23:58.7 You’ve got to stay in the fire, you’ve go t to stay in
the mix of it all, and everyone’s individually goin g
to have to write down who those people are and get
around them.
0:24:06.7 Energy’s contagious, being around uh, bus iness like-
minded people is, you know, contagious. I was just
over at this gentleman who invited me to dinner. Al l
this guy wanted, you know, was to meet and bring, h e’s
not even a chiropractor. I went to his house and I was
looking on his fridge. And I was looking at this ma p
on his fridge, and it said “53% of a million dollar s.”
0:24:29.6 And I’m like, oh, that’s, that’s a cool n umber. And
then off this little circle were all these little
lines and I’m telling you, the most detailed, looke d
like a business plan. Like, it said, “men’s prayer
group”, it said, “connecting through here”, then ov er
here it said, “products” and “this” and “where to
process it” and “social media” and it had this whol e
list. And, I’m like, “Wow”.
24
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
0:24:45.9 So I looked at this guy and I said, “This is the most
incredible business thing I’ve ever seen, what is i t?”
And he goes, “Oh my 10 year old made that”.
I said, “What? Your 10 year old made that? That’s
most, that’s the most mapped out vision for a busin ess
I’ve ever seen, what is it?”
He said, “Oh he’s making little finger skateboards and
he’s selling them on eBay and Facebook, and yeah so
he, he wrote that whole thing out.”
0:25:08.7 I am like, “How did he do that?”
“Oh, he just, he hangs out with me and some of my
mentors and listens to how we do mind mapping and
stuff. And this is his mind map, ‘cause he said, ‘D ad,
I think if I do all these things on this piece of
paper right here, I will get 53% of a million
dollars.’”
0:25:23.4 And I am like, “Well what is the other, y ou know, you
know, 47%?”
And he goes, “Oh that was just faith, bel ieving you
can do it.”
I’m like, “What?” I’m like, I just learned the, th e
biggest business lesson from a 10 year old over one
night at dinner and it rocked my world. And that wa s
on Saturday night. So I’m like thinking to myself, I’m
going to go home and think about it, that clearly.
0:25:42.5 So this, you know just getting stuff dial ed in clear
25
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
like that I thought was so important and because he ’s
been around his dad he’s so positive and uplifting and
around all his dad’s friends, that’s what a 10 year
old gleaned from it.
I’m like, if a 10 year old can do that, I’ve got t o
step up my game a little bit. You know what I mean?
0:25:56.5 MATT PRADOS: Sure that’s awesome. Now let’s say uh,
let’s say these guys are out there, they’re in the
trenches, they don’t have a mentor immediately arou nd.
Or maybe they don’t have a positive person sitting
there, top three books, tapes, CD’s whatever, that you
know, you can recommend for them to listen to, to g et
back in the fire.
0:26:14.0 DR. MATT HUBBARD: Oh, my gosh! Are you kidding me?
That’s like, I, I’m a reading machine. Um, right, I
mean, I love reading faith stories man. Well Napole on
Hill, The Law of Success, I mean that book is so
thick, but you can’t flip it open and not get some
nugget out of it. So what I do, just to you know, l et
you know I spend 10 minutes every morning and I, I
read, you know, an inspirational thing. And then I
read um, one of, I’m going through this book right
here, so it’s on the front of my desk right here, T he
Law of Success, I just flip, I open it up and I rea d
it.
0:26:50.4 And then, I mean I read so many books it’ s crazy I
can’t believe you’re telling me. I honestly downloa d a
sermon, this is what I do, hey, if anyone wants it you
got to c3sandiego.com, download this guy Jurgen, fr om
26
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
Australia. The funniest most inspiring guy I’ve eve r
listened to in my life. And he rocks my world every
time I download one. But, I mean it’s just little
things that are doing it.
0:27:13.8 Like, um, Become Who You Were Born to Be that’s by um,
Brian Souza. S O U Z A. That book rocked my world and
you know who gave that to me, was a dentist! So I t ake
care of this dentist um, for Extreme Makeover and, I
mean I love chiropractors, but hey once in a while I
want to learn some good business stuff. I go to thi s
dentist, everything he does is excellent. And I go
“What, what’s this?” and he goes “Ahh, well one of my
patients just wrote this because I inspired him and
it’s really a really good book and it was Become Wh o
You Were Born to Be.
0:27:39.6 And I was like, “Oh my gosh”. I read it. I was on
fire. Uh, Millionaire in the Pew that was an
incredible book. Just rocked my world on the
principles of money and that when you just start
applying the, the, you know, the principles of mone y
in a way, you‘ll have so much of abundance that you
want to make sure that you’re giving back, you know ,
and doing things on a big level.
0:28:00.9 That, that book totally revolution on my mind, and
then there’s the last book and it was called God’s
Generals. And they went through and they found just
these powerhouses, that were generals, oh, not even
generals, they were plumbers and electricians, but
they finally made a, a stand on the grounds, that “ you
know what, I had better start listening to God and see
27
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
what happens.” And literally the rest of the book i s
all the powerful things they did in their life. By the
end of the book, I said, “Oh my gosh, that was abou t
the most powerful book I’ve read.” Because every st ory
was so inspiring and the last page of the book it s ays
“Who’s the next gen- who’s the next generation of
generals gonna be? It could be you, are you
listening?”
0:28:38.9 I said, “That’s it”. So that book was ins piring. But
to so many…
MATT PARDOS: Nice.
MATT HUBBARD: …so many cool things.
0:28:46.3 MATT PRADOS: I take it that you do not watch too
much TV or read too many newspapers?
DR. MATT HUBBARD: I don’t, I’ve never, I do not read a
newspaper. Ah, I do not watch TV except for one
caveat. I am a Jack Bauer fan with 24. The problem is
I can’t sleep afterwards because I am so fired up.
And, I recommend, sometimes you need brain candy,
‘cause you can’t think about all this crazy stuff a ll
the time otherwise you brain will shut down. At lea st
in my case, so I went and got season one. I got so
addicted to watching it, the season one, bought, I
bought every year. And my wife and I go on vacation ,
up in the mountains somewhere, and we just watch a
season of 24, somewhere out in the middle of the
remote Colorado mountains, and it’s totally romanti c.
But I am a freaking Jack Bauer fanatic.
28
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
0:29:28:4 MATT PRADOS: That’s awesome. Alright, cool. Well, I’ll
tell you this is a, this is definitely been inspiri ng.
You move a mile a minute. Uh, we have covered some
incredible stuff and uh, at this point what other
words of wisdom, uh, maybe that you’ve shared at CO RE,
can you inspire to our listeners that we uh, haven’ t
yet covered?
0:29:48.0 MATT HUBBARD: Yeah, one thing hit me last night at
CORE and it rocked my world. We had a speaker, and it
was Heidi Farrell. And the one thing that she did, she
got up there and she developed, she wrote this song
about chiropractic and she sang it. And, my first
thought was, “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe she just did
that.” Then she sang another song, and I am like, ” Oh
my gosh!” I can’t, you know you’re like embarrassed
for them? But it was so freaking funny. I’m like “O h
my gosh” and then a revela-, a revelation hit me li ke
no other. I go, that is no wonder she could take,
she’s a CA, she could take a doctor to 1,000 patien t
visits no problem, successfully.
0:30:31.8 And then I saw some things that she said. And then it
all hit me, and I said, “You know what it is? I car e
too much what people think. That’s why I’m not seei ng
more and collecting more than I ever have before”.
0:30:41.5 And I realized it’s like wow, we all have a little bit
pride, a little bit of ego, like we’re above that. But
her heart, she wasn’t on her platform, she was on
mine. And if she did it on her own, I’d been like, “Oh
she knows everybody, they love her, blah, blah, bla h,
29
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
that’s funny”. No, no, no she came out and didn’t g ive
a rip about what any doctor in the room thought abo ut
her. She didn’t give a rip about what any CA though t
about her. And she captulated [ sic], every person in
that room and then she rocked it for the next 45
minutes. And I will tell you it’s because, she didn ’t,
she came in with “I don’t really give a rip, I am
going to speak truth, I’m not going to back down. I ’ll
embarrass myself, if I have to do it to get my poin t
across”.
0:31:19.7 And I said, “Man if every chiropractor di dn’t give a
rip about themselves, but cared about a life, of yo u
know, of trying to get someone else in there, a kid
that needs you. We would have no problem with our l ine
out our door.” And it really convicted me to say, “ You
know what, I gotta stop giving a rip and walk up an d
give that, my card to that person in the drug aisle .”
To stop giving a rip and hand my card out to say
“Who’s your chiropractor?”
“Oh I don’t need one.”
“Well, that’s a lie. Every, every person needs a
chiropractor. You just might not be going to one ri ght
now, but at least put me in your rolodex.”
0:31:48.6 You know, whatever, it is, I need to be m ore bold and
not give a rip if I really want to serve more. One of
the quotes, that T. Harbecker, said to me one time
when I got to meet with him. He asked me what I was
doing, where I was at and where I wanted to be, and I
told him what I wanted to see. And he goes, “No you
don’t.”
I go, “Yeah I do.” And he goes, “No you d on’t, you’re
30
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
seeing exactly the, the number of people you want t o
see right now. Otherwise, you’d be seeing more.”
0:32:14.8 And I go, “Holy cow”, and it’s true. I’m exact,
everyone, whatever you’re seeing now, that’s exactl y
deep down what you want to be seeing.
And so we just got to break up the constraints, ge t
over ourselves, tell the story, and get as many new
patients. I didn’t say you have to keep them all, b ut
you should be booked up with a 3 week waiting list of
patients. And you can refer them out, send them to the
chiropractor who’s not as on fire as you are. But w e
need to have a waiting list of patients, trying to get
in our office because we don’t care about what peop le
think. We’re telling the story and people need to h ear
it. They want to hear it and I’m trying to shoot a
video right now, of all these kids from all differe nt
practices, saying thank you, not to the doctor but
“Thank you for being a chiropractor” and this is wh y…
And I want to get this testimony from 1 year olds t hat
can talk, all the way up to, you know 5 year olds.
0:33:03.3 I want to get as many little kids saying, “Thank you.
Don’t ever stop being a chiropractor.” And I want t o
send it to the schools, to play for all the graduat ing
kids, because we need to see that we make a differe nce
in these kids’ lives.
‘Cause, my little kids that come see me don’t have
back pain. They either had asthma, they had somethi ng
crazy going on. We changed their life. It happens i n
every office. We just need to put it on video, send it
31
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
to the schools and send it to chiropractors that fe el
isolated. Here, have this video. Watch it every day .
This is what we’re doing to change the next
generation, what are you doing?
0:33:32.1 So the loudest voice wins. They’re either hearing our
voice of hope, or they’re hearing the world’s voice of
fear. Go get this shot, go do this, go do that, you
know, it’s all, it’s all what voice they’re hearing .
And so, I just really want to, you know, I want us to
be the stronger voice in everything we do and to be on
fire about it, be unashamed. If you’ve got to sing a
song, or do whatever you do. I realized that last
night, that I just gotta not give a rip, and take i t
to the next level and we can all do that. And we wo n’t
have to worry about, you know, all these extra litt le
side-by things.
0:34:05:8 MATT PRADOS: That’s incredible.
MATT HUBBARD: That’s it.
MATT PRADOS: So powerful. Uh, I gotta say, definitely
inspiring as always, whenever we talk. You always u h,
put new ideas out there and, and I love hearing the m.
I love this uh, idea of CORE. I love the idea of
having 1,000 COREs out there. I mean, think about t hat
guys. If you had the ability to create the effect i n
your local community and around the world by teamin g
up and being part of CORE, I think it’s just one of
those powerful things in the profession as a, as a
whole today uh, hooking up with a group like that i n
creating success, throughout, in the health care fi eld
32
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
and in peoples’ lives. ‘Cause there is no doubt whe n,
when Dr. Matt walks into the room and because of th ese
things that he’s doing, because of these books that he
reads, because he’s “spring cleaned” his life, peop le
see him and people want to be around him.
0:34:53.4 He has definitely become one of those peo ple that he
was a stalker of. So get out there, be a stalker, f ind
some mentors, become a mentor and really affect
peoples’ lives.
0:35:02.9 Dr. Matt, love it. Thanks for coming on t he call. Any,
any last words of wisdom?
0:35:06.4 DR. MATT HUBBARD: No man, I really just uh, love the
fact that you’re doing this man, and I hope this ge ts
to, you know, the far reaching corners so every
chiropractor can hear it. So I appreciate you and u h,
just all the interviews. I love seeing your tweets on
all the different doctors you’ve interviewed. I thi nk
that’s incredible. And you know, I hope it catches on
like wild fire and that people grasp it and get a h old
of it and something big happens. It, you know, spar ks
a fire man.
0:35:30.0 MATT PRADOS: Yeah, I’ll tell you, after every
interview you know, I got goose bumps. I‘m excited.
There’s definitely leaders out there putting this
thing together for everybody to find the mentors, y ou
know, so they don’t have to travel and, and fly aro und
and be at seminars junkie like you were to find tho se
nuggets. There is no “one size” fits all so I reall y
hope this program is able to serve, uh, the profess ion
33
Matt Prados/Dr. Matt Hubbard Interview © 2010 Chiro practicMarketers.com
as a whole and, and really provide the mentors it’s
needed.
0:35:51.0 So, thanks again for coming out Dr. Matt. I will talk
to you soon and uh, until then, let’s rock and roll .
0:25:57.2 DR. MATT HUBBARD: Alright man, thank you.
