Baylor Lawyers throughout our nation are providing sound counsel to those in need of help, representing their clients in courtrooms, sitting on judicial benches, and serving their communities. They are truly making a difference in the lives of others on a daily basis. Serving others is indeed at the core of our profession and I am, as you surely are, grateful for the impact that Baylor Lawyers have on our state and our nation.

In this issue of Docket Call, we recognize and celebrate another way in which Baylor Lawyers have given back. We highlight our generous supporters and hear from some of the scholarship recipients whose lives have been touched. Their expressions of gratitude, as well as their aspirations, are remarkable. One thing is for certain: the next generation of Baylor Lawyers will continue to advance the Baylor Law brand.

Though we are blessed to have an enviable endowment, there is still much work to be done in order to make a Baylor Law School scholarship, full or partial, available to nearly all of our incoming students. This remains our goal and I know that with your help, it is an achievable one.

In this issue, we’ll also introduce you to Matthew Matheny—the 2015 Young Baylor Lawyer of the Year—who was surprised with the honor at a Law alumni reception held in conjunction with the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting. Matt has an impressive résumé and is always looking to serve his clients with excellence and integrity. You’ll find Matt’s heart for serving others in his community is equally impressive.

Also included is an introduction to some outstanding representatives of Baylor Law School in our faculty and student profiles. Photos from alumni networking receptions, the John and Marie Chiles Federalist Papers Lecture Series, and our most recent commencement ceremony are all featured in this issue. Each of these special events provided great reason to celebrate and be grateful for the commitment of, and camaraderie among, Baylor Lawyers.

As we celebrate the season, I thank you again—our alumni family, our friends, and our faculty and staff colleagues—who support us throughout the year. Providing students the opportunity of a singular education is certainly a treasured blessing.

I am so honored to be the recipient of the Judge Sam B. Hall Endowed Scholarship. I feel blessed to be at Baylor Law School, pursuing my

dream of becoming a child advocacy lawyer. My gratitude for your kindness is boundless

because if it were not for this scholarship, I would not be at this incredible school.

I am not a traditional law student. I am a married father of two (soon to be three) wonderful children. The decision my wife and I made to pack up our kids, forfeit all income, and move to Waco was incredibly difficult. We could not have made it without your generous help. At Baylor Law School, I have found great success. You have helped make that possible. Thank you!

Page 14: MATTHEW MATHENY: 2015 YOUNG BAYLOR LAWYER OF THE … · It is through the generosity of many, that Baylor Law School can continue its commitment to service this, and every, holiday

Dean Brad Toben surprised Matthew Matheny with the Young Baylor Lawyer

of the Year award at the Baylor Law alumni reception held in conjunction with the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting. Matheny’s wife, Julia ( JD ’04), and his parents were in attendance at the reception to share in his surprise.

“I was surprised to see my parents walk into the banquet room when Dean Toben called my name because I sincerely did not know the award was being presented or that I was even considered,” said Matheny. “I was delighted that I could share this award with them. Without my parents’ guidance, my wife’s support and the opportunities given to me at the Provost Umphrey Law Firm by Walter Umphrey and the partners, I certainly would not be in this position.”

FA C U LT Y N OTE SPROFESSOR MATT CORDON

F A C U L T Y P R O F I L E

After becoming a faculty member in 2000, Cordon developed and began teaching the Advanced Legal Research course. Since 2007, he has taught all introductory legal writing classes within the Legal Analysis, Research, and Communications (LARC) program.

Cordon also served as the reference librarian for six years and has been associate director of the law library for the past nine years. His newest role, director of the Legal Writing Center, began when it opened this fall.

“The newly created Legal Writing Center is the result of many months of study and discussion among the entire Law School faculty, which adopted a proposal drafted by current LARC instructors to enlarge the research and writing program to five quarters,” said Dean Brad Toben. “The Law School faculty firmly believes the Legal Writing Center and expanded

LARC program, along with other programmatic improvements, will provide students with an even stronger system of training.”

In his new role, Cordon will continue to work one-on-one with students. “I teach legal writing to more than 150 students, and I meet with students individually about various writing projects throughout the year. I enjoy helping students more than anything,” said Cordon.

“In addition to all Professor Cordon does for Baylor Law, he selflessly shared his time to serve as the chairman of the Baylor Faculty Senate for two years,” said Toben. “Matt is a servant leader and outstanding asset to the Baylor Faculty Senate.”

Cordon is the co-author of multiple books. He worked with Professor Brandon Quarles to write Researching Texas Law and Specialized Topics in Texas Legal Research. Cordon is also the co-author of Civil War Blockade Runners: Prize Claims and the Historical Record, Including the Denbigh’s Court Documents along with Professor Jerry Powell.

Additionally, Cordon manages to write between 50 and 100 essays each year for titles published by Gale and Cengage Learning. “Most recently, I have worked on a number of essays for American Law Yearbook and the second edition of the Gale Encyclopedia of Senior Health,” said Cordon.

His hobbies don’t stop at writing books as he participates—and wins—martial arts tournaments as well. “My son started taking taekwondo classes in 2008 and even though I would do anything to support my kids, I became bored watching,” said Cordon. “I started participating in classes, and my son and I both eventually earned black belts.”

Reflecting on the many ways he values his involvement with Baylor Law, Cordon said, “I have been fortunate to have many opportunities to contribute to the Law School and the University, and I always find the work I do to be rewarding. I am blessed that I have been able to spend most of my career here.”

AS DIRECTOR OF THE LEGAL WRITING CENTER, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF THE LAW LIBRARY, AND PROFESSOR OF LAW, MATT CORDON CONTRIBUTES TO BAYLOR LAW SCHOOL IN MANY WAYS.

Deivanayagam’s areas of specialization are criminal and juvenile law, both of which he takes great pride in practicing. He is able to relate to them and sees most of his clients as genuinely good people who have made mistakes.

“Practicing juvenile law can be both depressing and rewarding. I am constantly reminded of how fortunate I am to have family, friends, and mentors in my life. Most of the youth I deal with have little to none of these role models,” said Deivanayagam. “Every now and then, I get a card, a graduation announcement, or run into someone that I have represented. The ‘thanks’ they give me provides a sense of accomplishment.”

Outside of work, Deivanayagam also serves as a judge for the City of Woodway and teaches for the Texas Municipal Courts Association. “I teach to a broad spectrum of municipal judges around the state. Some judges have been on the bench for two years and others for over 25 years. It is important to present the basics of a topic for the newer judges, but it is equally important to keep the presentation fresh for the more experienced ones. I try to bring the same approach to my teaching style,” he said.

Deivanayagam is vice president and treasurer of the McLennan County Access to Recovery, which supports the McLennan County Drug Court. As a husband and father to three young children, he has a lot of activities to participate in, and a lot of heart to help him do it. “At the end of the day, I think that is what we all strive to do in this chosen profession of service—to make a difference.”

VIK DEIVANAYAGAM ( JD ’96) HAS BEEN PRACTICING LAW WITH THE LAW OFFICES OF ROD GOBLE SINCE EARNING HIS LAW DEGREE AND HOLDS A NUMBER OF POSITIONS IN THE WACO COMMUNITY—INCLUDING THAT OF ADJUNCT PROFESSOR AT BAYLOR LAW SCHOOL.

“There are numerous things I enjoy about teaching at Baylor Law School, like visiting with the faculty and administration, and the feeling of providing some guidance and a little wisdom to the next generation of attorneys. But, selfishly, teaching keeps me sharp and makes me feel renewed. Every quarter I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of students that are in my class.” said Deivanayagam.

Charles Milton McDonald (JD ’58) was born

November 2, 1928, and passed away

June 11, 2015, in Whitney, Texas. He

graduated from Waco High School in

1946 and Baylor University in 1958,

earning a combined degree.

Charles was inducted into the

Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers

Association Hall of Fame, becoming

only the second lawyer from

McLennan County to receive the

honor, and the 56th lawyer to enter

the hall of fame. He also served as a

TCDLA president and board member

after helping establish the association

in 1971. He represented thousands of

clients across the country in the more

than 54 years he practiced law.

Not only was Charles a dedicated

lawyer, he and his late wife Kathy

loved to travel the world in addition

to owning and operating a number of

businesses. Charles enjoyed life and

enjoyed being with those close to him.

Harry Alonzo DeFord II (JD ’65) was born May 13, 1941,

and went to be with his Lord on

August 21, 2015, after many years of

battling cancer. He married Suzanne

Black on October 23, 1981, and they

moved to Garland, Texas, where he

resided until his death.

Harry earned a juris doctor from

Baylor in 1969. He helped establish

the first legal department in a bank in

the State of Texas when he worked for

Oak Cliff Bank & Trust. After Bank

of America purchased the bank, he

specialized in mergers and acquisitions.

Harry was a member of the ABA,

served as president of the American

Banking Institute, and was also the

chairman of the SPRC at St. Phillip’s

United Methodist Church. In his

spare time, he enjoyed creating

video slideshows, watching western

movies, and collecting bald eagle

figurines. Harry’s greatest joy was

spending time at the lake house he

and his father built together.

Gary Ray Price (JD ’65)

was born November 27, 1936, and

passed away August 10, 2015. He earned

a bachelor of science from Howard

Payne College in 1960 and a juris doctor

from Baylor Law School in 1965.

He served one four-year term as

County Attorney of Brown County

and two four-year terms as District

Attorney for the 35th Judicial District

of Texas. He was also Board Certified

in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board

of Legal Specialization.

Gary was a member of the

Texas Bar Foundation, Life Fellow;

Counselors Organization at Baylor

School of Law; Texas Bar Association;

the American Bar Association; and

Brown County Bar Association.

He devoted many hours to the

community, including leadership

positions with the Brownwood Jaycees,

Brownwood Chamber of Commerce,

the Heart of Texas Girl Scout Council,

Texas Bank Brownwood, the Howard

Payne Jacket Century Club, the

MacArthur Academy of Freedom, and

the Howard Payne Board of Trustees.

Perhaps the most personally

gratifying accomplishment of Gary’s

professional career was the enactment

of the Tuition Equalization Grant

(TEG), which he created.

Since its passage, the TEG has

helped more than 100,000 students

attend the private college or

university of their choice.

Gary married Jarene Thomas in

1958 and, out of this union, two sons

were born—Kent Montgomery Price

and Waren Corbeth Price.

Ted Owen Christopher (JD ’67) was born August 29, 1941,

and passed away August 31, 2015, at

a hospice house in Burleson, Texas.

After graduating from Baylor Law

School, he was the City Attorney in

Arlington from 1967 to 1974. Ted

then entered into private practice,

from which he retired in 2007. He

was a member of the Texas Bar

PEGGY CLARE AND LOUIS O. SATTERFIELD, JR., SCHOLARSHIP

Louis O. Satterfield, Jr. (center), converses with Susan Robertson Thomas and Dean Brad Toben at a Houston alumni reception.

Demonstrating a strong commitment to

the success of Baylor Law School and the

students aspiring to earn Baylor Law

degrees, Louis Satterfield, Jr. (BBA ’59, JD ’60)—who served for many

years on Baylor’s Board of Regents—and his late wife, Peggy Clare,

established the Peggy Clare and Louis O. Satterfield, Jr., Scholarship Fund.

Their faithful generosity and enduring dedication to the next generation

of Baylor Law graduates has given many students the opportunity not

only to attend Baylor Law, but to fulfill a lifelong dream: the dream of

becoming a Baylor Lawyer.
