The American Soybean Associa-tion, the Wisconsin Soybean As-sociation and Pioneer, a DuPont business, announce that Matthew Wagenson of Clintonville, has been named to the 2012 class of ASA/DuPont Young Leaders.
Wagenson took part in the first step of the Young Leader program last month at Pioneer headquarters in Johnston, Iowa. In late February he will participate in part two which will be in Nashville, Tenn. in conjunction with Commodity Classic. Young Leaders will participate in media and advocacy training, communication style analysis, group case studies, tours of Pioneer research facilities, public speaking training,
and discussions with Pioneer executives on soybean markets, biotechnology and soybean product trait development, as well as network with the other producers in their class. For more information on the ASA/DuPont Young Leader Program go to www.soygrowers.com/dyl.
Wagenson farms with his father and brother. They raise corn and soybeans as well as feed out about 250 beef steers annually. He and his wife, Elisha, are active in their community.
Congratulations to Matt Wagenson.

“Our FlexDraper cuts beans off closer to the ground and sends them in so evenly and gently that we experience a lot less shatter loss
and recover more beans – at least a bushel an acre. With the price of the beans, that’s close to $15,000 more in beans with this header.”

update on the National sustainable soybean Initiative
Progress continues on a grower-led program that will help meet market demands, according to Shawn Conley, University of Wisconsin (UW-Madison) Soybean Specialist.
Earlier this year, the UW-Madison was awarded a grant for this program that will eventually allow U.S. soybean farmers to maximize global utilization of U.S. soy in the feed, food, industrial and energy markets.
Currently, organizers are working in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indi-ana, Michigan and Ohio to identify and survey farmers who can provide valuable input. The objective of this study is to provide all segments of the soybean value chain including the producers, processors, manufacturers,
retailers, end users and consumers with a method for documenting and verifying progress along the sustain-ability continuum.
A similar program was developed by the UW-Madison for food process-ing potatoes and vegetables, called Healthy Farms, that created a network of farmers, food processors and end users.
“We want to build a similar program that will be grower and producer driven, research-based, crop and re-gionally appropriate and able to verify progress in all components of sustain-ability, environmental, economic and social aspects,” says Conley.
The framework will be developed in collaboration with the existing
network of national and state soybean commodity organizations.
“Our goal is to address the desired United Soybean Board position for sustainability within a global context; engage the value chain in this effort, and create possibility for documented continual improvement with a scien-tific basis,” Conley says.
The program is a key component of the USDA priority for Global Food Security and we will work with our national network to develop a Nation-al Institute for Food and Agriculture proposal to implement a framework for sustainability that will be ap-plicable to a broad range of soybean cropping systems nationally.
