BOOKS OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY 2011

JOHN GRISHAM – “THE CONFESSION” John Grisham’s latest novel is a legal thriller with a serious pur-pose. Grisham focuses on the death penalty system in Texas, telling the story of a young man on death row for a crime he claims he didn't commit and a parolee three states away who confesses to a pastor that he committed that murder. The author keeps the reader guessing as to the outcome with a dedicated lawyer trying desperately to keep the death penalty from occur-ring. This is a harrowing and enthralling story but easily one of John Grisham’s best novels. ALSO now in the library: KEN FOLLETT – “FALL OF GIANTS” This is the latest from the author in a new historical series, set in the early 1900s before the 1st World War and onwards and fol-lowing British, German and Russian families as they cope with the devastation it brings. There is also the drama of the Russian Revolution and the struggle for the votes for women. A huge read but a captivating story and the first of a trilogy. NON-FICTION : A classic by Ion L Idriess : “Isles of Despair” This is a true story set in the early 1800s of a young woman called Barbara Thomson who is shipwrecked on an island at the top of Australia and rescued by the inhabitants who are savages. The Chief mistakenly believes that she is his deceased daughter back from the dead which is fortunate for Barbara as this keeps her alive. She lives with them for 5 years and is even forced to marry one of the young men but finally escapes and makes her way back to England on an English ship. A story of desperate survival in a harsh environment.

Well hello there and a happy new year to you all. I want to start by telling you Linking hands had a very upsetting event recently… we had two break-ins to our office. A person or persons broke a window at the back of the office and stole our Koha box from the internet service and petty cash box along with our donation money from the public, Petrol vouchers were also stolen that were a special grant from BP. We just want to stress the fact that this money and vouchers have been stolen from the community which leaves us very dis-appointed, shocked and angry that someone would do this to us. We believe you need to know this. We are here for the community and the money we receive is from the community. This helps us to run this service and pro-vide the shuttle service for the people of this community that need transport to medical appointments, hospital, etc. To steal from a group such as ours is the same thing as steal-ing from your own family. The value of the money is not the point here either, it is the whole bad feeling it leaves in your stomach and it takes away the trust you have in the community you live in. We have taken advice from the police and please note there will be no more money kept on our premises at any time in the future. Aqua Aerobics We have recently received funding for special needs and are able to extend our aerobics classes by one more each week. We will be running the extra class from Monday February 7th The class will be from 10 am to 11am at Tehana…so pick up will be 9.30 am from Maungaturoto and return by approx 11.45 am. We need to know if anyone is up for this extra session, so please phone us to put your name on the list. We still are running our Wednesday session which is pick up 9am and return 11.30. We have space on both these days but we need to have you en-roll to come with us. The cost is $6.00 a session and we offer free transport there and back. 09 4318969.

Health Shuttle report The grand old lady is at present up on blocks while we are get-ting a reconditioned gear box fitted. We are hopeful of getting the shuttle back on the road again by February. We have decided to keep the old darling going as long as we can even though it’s ageing. It has special meaning to us and the committee feels it’s worth it. The cost is high but then so is buying another one so a big part of your donations are maintaining it.

SOFA.(supa outings for the Aged) We feel there is a need to get this going and we are looking at once a month at least over the summer part of the year. We can transport at least 7 people on a mystery outing to

help drive all those sad, lonely, unloved feelings out the door and let the happy smiles and enjoyable times come back into your life. We will make this a half a day only and will include a short stop for tea and cake. We would like to compile a list of names of people that would like to go on one of these outings. The first trip will be in Feb-ruary, so you need to get your names to us now. Please give a call or pop in and we can talk about it. Ph 09 4318969. All other services running as usual and let us hope for a good year ahead. My regards Maureen Davis.

First and foremost greetings and Happy New Years wishes to you all. The Kaipara Bright Futures Programme is a Ministry of Social Development Initiative being delivered out of the Kaipara District Council. This programme aims to support young people aged 15 – 19 who are disengaged within North and South Kaipara. Our goal is to support positive path-ways by engaging our young people in available training opportunities, further education or employment where available. We are looking at holding a 3 day learner licence course in the Maungaturoto area in the very near future after successfully pi-loting a similar course in Dargaville in December 2010. If you are interested or have any questions our two dedicated commu-nity liaison workers based in the South Kaipara will help you. Please do not hesitate to call either: Rose Plunkett on: (09) 431 7418 or Rosemary Jones on: (09) 431 7279.

HOMEBUILDERS TEAM WOULD LIKE TO GIVE

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE

WHO GAVE FOOD AND GIFTS FOR US

TO DISTRIBUTE OVER THE HOLIDAY SEASON.

THESE GIFTS MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE FOR SOME OF THE FAMILIES IN THIS COMMUNITY.

I do hope you have all had a really great Christmas and New Year Holiday. It is good to come back refreshed and ready for a new year. With the new rooms we have we are now looking forward to serving the community more effectively and in more ways. The Counselling Room is getting good use and we are looking forward to the Craft Classes, starting again on the 28th January 9.30am, please just rock up if you are interested or feel you have something to offer. These classes are free they are being organized and run by our new Family Support Worker Pauline. Pauline has a lot of new ideas that she would like to see put in practice this year. The activities will be planned to be realistic and a lot of fun, so we would love to see you along. We will also continue to provide Family Support Workers and a PACE Worker and over the next few months I will elaborate on how these roles work for the benefit of the community. The Food Bank is still providing families in need, and we are hoping to see some new progress regarding this ser-vice. We will give you an update on that next month. If you feel we can be of any help to you please ring Denise on 431 9080 or call in to the Community House, 155 Hurndall St Blessings from Denise and the Team

On Wednesday, 8 December members enjoyed a delicious "Pot Luck" Christmas lunch at the home of Secretary, Sue Place, pre-ceded by an open-air meeting in the shade of her beautiful Golden Elm. Members voted for our annual charity dona-tion to go to 'Project Promise' for the oncology unit at Whangarei Hospital. After we had admired their well organised garden and huge, tropical- hot polyhouses, several members took Sue and Geoff's charming young alpacas for a stroll in the gar-den, much to our delight. Our next meeting is at 11.0am on 16 February 2011 at Jill Mills' home followed by a picnic. Best bloom, fruit & vegie competitions as usual, and also "Decorated Hat". Bring lunch and a chair.

The main concern this month will be moisture – plenty of water will be needed for your garden. All those vegetables will be producing so watch out for summer insects. Thrips are a particular menace. Lightly prune roses and dead head to encour-age more flowers. Also disbud chrysanthe-mums. February is the main month to plant bulbs. Fruit harvest begins this month. Keep the trees well watered to swell the fruit size. Grape vines need to be trimmed before final harvest and covering with a net to prevent the birds from eating all those grapes.

Experience the Joy of Walking... Why travel to Europe for a walking tour when you have the opportunity to enjoy one in your own back yard? Mark your diaries now for the Mangawhai Walking Weekend coming up on March 31st and book early as each walk has limited numbers. It is a fabulous way to enjoy stunning beaches and sights, beautiful weather, good food and music and make new friends. This year the Walking Weekend has an extensive range of walks. The weekend begins with the Troubadour Trail. Enjoy a social saunter complete with stops for mystery entertainment – last year there were violins and kapa haka – this year who knows what’s around the corner? This is the first event of the weekend and it is on Friday night, starting at 2 pm. Suitable for all - an easy social stroll for with plenty of stops for relaxing and enjoying music along the way Take your best friend on the Doggy Walk on a farm with lots of other dogs and owners to romp with. Find out how the Spirit of Mangawhai Saved the Harbour When the harbour was blocked and the estuary was dying, find out how locals fought and won the battle to save the harbour. This includes a boat trip! Find out why Mangawhai is being called the Mediterranean of the South. When you go on The Ramblers Food Experience or The Truffle walk. For the keen walkers who want more of a challenge there are segments of Te Araroa Track to explore (either the Dome Valley or the cliff top to Brynderwyns ). And if walking is not for you, this year, you can do mountain biking, kayaking or caving!. On Saturday evening you can enjoy the Wine and Food festival with a delicious range of local foods and wines. Many of these have won medals for their produce – this year alone, local olives, wines and chocolate have won gold medals. In 2011 the enter-tainment is going to be Elvis impersonator Andy Stankovich, so expect a whole lot of shaking to go on.

There are more than 20 different walks, over the weekend, led by locals who love to share their knowledge of the area. To find out more check out the website www.mangawhaiwalkingweekend.co.nz

OTAMATEA GREY POWER INC. We invited everybody over 50 to greet and meet “The Growl Collection Centre” at morning tea, in November 2010. This was felt to be very successful and everyone is invited to our first Pub-lic Meeting, 23rd February at 2pm, in the Anglican Church Hall. (The ‘Footprints Room’.) The meetings will be held at 2pm in the afternoon, on the last Wednesday of each month, in the Footprints Room, and we do hope you will attend whenever you are able. As well as the obvious desire to assist you, we wish to entertain and give you company one afternoon a month and to not be anonymous faces in the community. Each meeting will be rounded off with afternoon tea (or coffee) and the chance for informal discussions. We thank you all for your support

and wish you well in 2011.

December, Christmas and most of January have come and gone and we are well into what is left of the 2010/2011 bowls season. The new green has finally been finished after some quite serious hiccups, but all credit to Tiger Turf, they guaranteed to get it right and from all reports it is coming along very well. The men have completed their 4s and singles since the last newsletter. Four teams took part in the 4s. The winners were John McMurray, Kevin Robinson, Keith Youngman and Colin Heath from Ron McCallum, Rex Roadley, Kevin Flower and Irwin Van Pelt. Sixteen players entered the singles and after some pretty cut-throat competition Gerald Barnett, who only entered to save a bye, ran out the winner from Ron McCallum. Before the end of the month Helen Nevill and Naira Vaney, along with Kevin Robinson will represent the club at the Centre Champion of Champions event. Club members have been having quite a bit of success around the open tournaments at other clubs. Ted Mooney and Irwin Van Pelt won the Ashcroft Pairs at Waipu. Various other combina-tions have featured in the prize lists around the area. Coming up in the next few weeks is the men’s triples. Other things to think about: The Paton Triples, Thursday March 17 The McCallum 4s which were deferred in December and will now be played on Thursday March 31 The Winter Tournament starting Wednesday April 20

THANK YOU

In September 2008 Hannah Fergus, then 21 months, needed corrective surgery on her hip. This involved lengthy stays in Starship Hospital and for Mum and Dad, Claire and Craig the convenience of being able to stay in Ronald McDonald House made life so much easier. With that in mind, they resolved to give something back, and the idea of a Charity Golf Day was born. A promotion campaign by ‘Ferg’ (with Claire right there in the back-ground) brought pledges of sponsorship and donations, and with the total support of the Paparoa Golf Club things fell into place. The end result: On Saturday 13th November, a full on day, with a field of almost 100, and a lot of laughs, with the oc-casional bit of good golf. Thanks to the wonderful support of many individuals, the local Rotary and Lions Clubs, the day raised a total of $7000 and it is hoped that Hannah can present this to the right people in the New Year. The whole Fergus family, and the Paparoa Golf Club thanks the very many people (and the wider community) who gave such amazing support to make the day succeed; it was a credit to you all.

MAUNGATUROTO SQUASH CLUB UPDATE 2011 The new season is upon us so it’s time to dust off the racquets and shoes and think about a bit of pre-season training…….. Don’t worry we have the perfect way to get ready for the squash season, yes it’s once again time for our business house squash competition. We are expecting large entries again this year so make sure you register your teams in early , please remember we like to encourage all teams to have a “new to the club” team member. We will be starting business house early March. The date for the AGM has been set for Monday 21st Feb, 7pm at the country club. New and not so new faces are most welcome and don’t worry not everyone will end up having a job but if you would like to know any info about roles within the club, ways you can get involved or general questions give me a call. IS MAUNGATUROTO THE BEST PLACE TO BE AT CHRISTMAS??? THE GREATEST CHRISTMAS PARADE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Saturday December the 4th saw what many have described as Maungaturoto’s best Christmas parade ever and I would have to agree. I can’t quite put my finger on the exact reason why, was it the fact that there seemed to be not only a great community spirit, but a willingness to get involved and be part of the occasion, was it the huge number of floats and groups involved , was it the amazing quality of the entries (of which was very high), was it the awesome talent at the concert at the High school, the wonder-ful turnout of spectators or was it all the brilliant helpers who help run and organise the evening?, I would like to think it is a combination of all of it, but the one thing I am sure of is the next parade has a very hard act to follow. The winners were Best business float: North power social club Community floats 1st Mgto Playcenter 2nd Mgto Primary School 3rd=ORT, Mgto Christian School, Mgto Congregational Church A huge thank you to all everyone who took part in the parade Mgto Garden club North power Social club Mgto Primary school Creative pictures Mgto Playcenter Gas Mgto Mgto cubs/scouts Noel Radd Motors Plunkett Atlas Quarries Mgto St John Craig Jones Welding St John Cadets Northland Fisheries ORT Alcohol Accord Mgto Congregational Church Mgto Anglican Church Mgto Christian School Mgto Fire brigade Linking Hands Arty Farties Waipu pipe band If you are not on this list make sure you get involved next time!!!!!!! Also a special thanks to our sponsors: The Maungaturoto Busi-ness and community association, the Kaipara district council and Fonterra Mgto. Lastly a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who helped out, there were so many of you I can’t name you all but we really could not have done it without you. If you have any ideas we could improve on the next parade or if you would like to be involved give me a bell. SANTAS GROTTO COMES TO MAUNGATUROTO The final week of the Christmas build up saw a special visitor

come to town. Santa made time in his very busy schedule to spend some time with the young and not so young members of Maungie, we also were lucky enough to have Mickey and Minnie Mouse drop in for a bit, it really makes Christmas that much more special when you see a smile on the face of a chid who has just seen Santa or the waves of people in their cars as they pass by. Thank you to those who took the time to come and give your child a wonderful memory and take a photo, to plunket for the use of their rooms, to Jeff for helping me all week and lastly a big thank you to Mickey, Minnie and Santa. MAUNGATUROTO’S COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS “I have a dream”, it’s a great quote and yes I really do. I would like to see Maungaturoto come together on Christmas day and enjoy what Christmas should be about, friends, family and being together to share a very special day. In conjunction with many community groups, I am hoping that this Christmas we will have a community Luncheon on Christ-mas day, it will be open to everyone who would like to come, but to make this event happen we will need a lot of support from the wider community, if you would like to be involved or know of ways we can get help please give me a call. Let’s Make Maungie Famous for being the best place to be at Christmas. Terri Donaldson 4318 599 [email protected]

Editor’s notesEditor’s notesEditor’s notesEditor’s notes Happy New year to everyone and here’s to a great 2011.

THANK YOU TO TINA HOLST A HUGE THANK YOU TO TINA WHO HAS PRINTED THE MATTERS AT THE COUNTRY CLUB FOR US AND ALSO ORGANISED THE COLLATING IN THE PAST. TINA IS MOVING ON FROM THE MAMMOTH JOB OF PRINTING OUR COMMUNITY PUBLICATION. WE’LL MISS YOU! DEADLINES: Please stick to our deadlines. We have them for a very good reason. The Matters is a very large publication and takes a lot of time to put together. Please do not request advertising after deadline as a refusal may offend. Lost Ads for December: Unfortunately the computer deleted some adverts without me realising. These have been reinstated. Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience caused to the businesses affected by this technical error.
