Get off the Couch! I’ve always been a “smell the roses” kind of person. I like to
gather the big picture in order to understand my environment. I
try to be aware of my surroundings and all the peripheral stuff
going on in it. It’s a temperament thing.
When I was a young fella’, a friend (who was just like me) was
having coffee with me in a big city restaurant and in walked the
most gorgeous girl I had ever seen. Stunning! I tried to focus
back on the conversation and keep my eyes on my friend but all
my instincts were screaming at me to watch the scenery. My
friend’s eyes never moved from mine and I was forced to admire
his restraint. Then in mid sentence he inserted a wry comment:
“By the way, I have amazing peripheral vision..” I nearly choked
on my coffee, but I never forgot the moment.
We have some stuff to see around us here in this neck of the
Kaipara and it’s not just peripheral, it’s stuff you look right at
regularly.
What disturbs me is the disinterest reflected to me by some of
my local friends. “Have you walked in the Kauri Bushman’s Me-
morial Park I have asked;” mostly the answer is “no”. Like a car
I watched that pulled in there during the perfect weather of Labor
weekend, they powered down the window and looked up through
the gate, (you can’t see the wood for the trees, literally,) “naaa,
doesn’t look like much” they probably said and drove off. In a
kind of funny way I was relieved; such philistines don’t deserve
to experience the almost cathedral like stillness and beauty in
there. So stay at home! On your couch! There you go.. now turn
on the Telly and watch a documentary about walking in some
awesome forest.
Have you walked the new trail at Paparoa yet? “yeah, I’m gonna
do that one day..” What about Batley? “nothin’ much to see there
eh?” Have you driven up through Ararua to Waiotira? “Naa, too
far..” What about Tinopai?, By the way where do you find a hill
called Pukearenga? I could go on.
Are we blinded by self interest when we cannot see beyond the
everyday to the rich scenery and history that fills this region?
Maybe it’s just general apathy about life that keeps a lot of peo-
ple on the couch.
In these lean mean recession days, we need to learn to walk a lot
and notice the stuff we used to race past in our cars. To do that
we have to get up off the couch!

OTAMATEA HIGH SCHOOL CALF AND LAMB DAY The 6th Annual OHS calf and lamb day was held on Friday Oc-
tober the 22nd.
The weather was good and the numbers of entrants were the
highest yet, in all 23 students with 26 animals took part, which
were supported by a huge turn out of family and friends. The
judges Neil Donaldson, Neil Sidwell and Des Smeath had their
work cut out for them as a high standard of calves and lambs
were on show.
Although the competition was tight, the attitude of all the par-
ticipants was excellent and so was the quality of all the effort
they had put in.
This year we were lucky to have two new trophies in the calf
section, a leading trophy and a junior champion trophy kindly
donated by Bryce Ball.
New trophies are always welcome and we seem to be a bit light
on trophies for the lamb section, if anyone would like to donate
a trophy please give me a call.
Thanks to our sponsors, Elders, The National Bank, RD1 Maun-
gaturoto, Agrisea, Paparoa Lions and a special mention to our
special quest the Prime Minister John Key.

NORTHLAND CIVIL DEFENCE
EMERGENCY GROUP
Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group is
encouraging Northland communities to have an emergency
response plan in place. A number of communities already have
developed a plan. The plan doesn’t need to be a major effort,
just a list of essential details, for example, a central place of
refuge in case of evacuation from your home, a list of people
and services that are available for assistance and who is re-
sponsible for helping out.
Our coastal communities are at risk from storm surge and tsu-
nami. As we have seen over the last few years, these events are
no longer rare. Sirens are being put into areas at risk to enable
Civil Defence to give advance warning of danger.
The Mangawhai community has a tsunami warning siren in
place and is looking at installing more. A public meeting is
being held on 9 December at the Mangawhai Club to finalise
their community emergency response plan.
Storm damage and fires are also capable of endangering com-
munities and we all need to have an emergency bag of essen-
tial documents and an emergency kit – just in case!
If you would like more information of emergency plans in
your area or would like to join the planning of an emergency
community plan, contact Kaipara District Council on 0800 72
7059 and talk to the Emergency Support Officer.

Kaipara District Council celebrates its
talented artists with the Kaipara Art
Awards
A first for Kaipara, the Art Awards are the culmination of a
number of displays held in Kaipara District Council’s Darga-
ville and Kaiwaka offices during the year. These exhibitions
were put together to showcase the work of artists throughout
the District, and to make art more readily available to the pub-
lic through the use of Council’s public space.
The final 2010 exhibition is now on in the Dargaville Council
Chambers foyer, off Station Road until Monday 15 November.
Members of the public are invited to view the works during
normal business hours, and to vote for the entry they like best.
This exhibition will conclude with an Art Awards evening on
Thursday 11 November from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm in the Coun-
cil Chambers where, thanks to generous sponsorship, the
prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. There
will also be a “people’s choice” prize.
This competition is a first for Kaipara and the hope is to build
on this for next year and make it part of Kaipara’s Art Calen-
dar.
Councillor Julia Sutherland is impressed by the quality of the
works submitted for this inaugural event, which range from
paintings to weaving, sculpture and jewellery. “While some
entries may not be very closely allied to the theme
“Celebrating Kaipara’s Abundance”, all demonstrate the crea-
tivity of talented individuals in Kaipara’s communities and
we’re delighted at the interest and support shown,” she said.
