This edition con- tains contributions from many authors around the world, well recognized in their field. The 10 chapters are nicely organized, with easy-to-read charts and graphs. The chapters outline in good detail the etiology and treatment of many craniofacial defects either acquired or congenital, their diagnosis, treatment, and continuing management. The publication from Quintessence is excellent quality. The print is very readable and includes superb color photography, line drawings and tables, several of which are recognizable from the previous editions. A concern to some readers may be the size of the color illus- trations, which are small in dimension for the size of the text pages. The text content has some new areas that are of significant interest to today’s practitioner, such as the chapters on digital technology, tissue engineering, and psy- chosocial considerations on the care of patients with head and neck cancer. Likely of more specific interest to the “special care” dentist is the chapter on maxillary defects that includes infor- mation on palatal lifts. Many special care patients have difficulty with their speech due to brain/spinal cord issues along with conditions such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Parkinson’s disease. The use of palatal lifts with these patients can be very beneficial to their daily function and well-being. Additionally, with the increased use of combination chemotherapy/radiation treatment, the oral effects of this treat- ment will be seen by more dentists as oral cancer is detected earlier and treated more aggressively by oncologists and their dental teams. This is a very good comprehensive text to have as a reference and has excellent contributions from many well-known authors. The text can serve any dentist who might see a patient who has had or will have treatment with chemotherapy and radiation therapy and or has a maxillary or mandibular defect that requires restoration and maintenance.
