Why a special and a changed approach to Mains examination is needed?

Take a look at the UPSC notification explaining about the Mains examination,

“The main Examination is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates rather than merely the range of their information and memory.

The nature and standard of questions in the General Studies papers (Paper II to Paper V) will be such that a well-educated person will be able to answer them without any special-ized study. The questions will be such as to test a candidate’s general awareness of a va-riety of subjects, which will have relevance for a career in Civil Services. The questions are like-ly to test the candidate’s basic understanding of all relevant issues, and ability to analyze, and take a view on conflicting socio-economic goals, objectives and demands. The candidates must give relevant, meaningful and succinct answers.”

Have you seen the highlighted words in the instructions given by the UPSC for the Mains Examination ???

Now, let us see some of the Mains questions asked by UPSC in the recent past.

1. Pala period is the most significant phase in the history of Buddhism in India. Enumerate. (150 words, 10 marks)

2. Judicial Legislation is antithetical to the doctrine of separation of powers as envisaged in the Indian Constitution. In this context justify the filing of large number of public interest petitions praying for issuing guidelines to executive authorities. (250 words, 15 marks)

4. What are the main factors responsible for gender inequality in India? Discuss the contribution of Savitribai Phule in this regard. (150 words, 10 marks)

The Mains exam needs a highly strategized, time effective and interlinked nature of covering the syllabus. Adding more complex to the preparation, you have about 12 weeks to complete your preparation of GS Papers (I, II, III, IV and IV) and Optional Paper.

Also, don’t forget the writing skill for giving “relevant, meaningful and succinct answers” which needs practise, evaluation and mentor feedback.
