PARISH BUSINESS

Immaculate Conception Thanks Visitation

Many, many thanks for your generosity in providing a wonderful Easter for our outreach clients. We were able to provide food baskets, a ham and a grocery gift card to those who needed it, which included Catholic Charities clients, transitional housing families, food pantry clients and Greencastle seniors. We helped 85 families and dis-tributed over 125 children’s baskets. Our parish family will pray for you during this blessed Easter Season, asking the risen Lord, who dwells within us and among us, to bless you abundantly for your continued generosity to our most vulnerable sisters and brothers. Thank you again.

Pam Stefik / IC Director of Christian Ministry

Sixth Sunday of Easter Reflection “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” Can we

hear Jesus saying these words to us? It’s often easier for us to imagine the apostles hearing this consoling command and following it, than to think of it really applying to us. After all, Jesus was standing right there with them. Can he really expect US, two thousand years later, not to be troubled by the cares of life? But the fact is that the gift Jesus was giv-ing to his disciples, he has also given to us: “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name.”

Jesus told them that peace would be theirs, and it can also be ours. Peace is, in fact, one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit, along with love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity. These fruits don't come from us. They aren’t just for people with certain cheery personalities. These fruits come from God straight into our souls through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Through our bap-tism and confirmation, Jesus gives us the gift of his Spirit. And then his peace, and so many other gifts can truly be-come ours if we open our hearts to them.

This is a reality that we can contemplate whenever wor-ry or anxiety strike. Whatever may be disturbing our inner peace--whether it be a family feud, some kind of physical suffering, or a difficult decision to make at work or school—-we can take comfort in knowing that we can find peace even in the midst of the problem. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you,” Jesus says. But he continues, “Not as the world gives do I give it to you.” In other words, God doesn’t promise to take away the struggle in an instant. But he does promise to give us his peace even in the midst of life's trials and tribulations.

National Day of Prayer On this National Day of Prayer for our nation, we gather with our family and friends to discuss important national issues, and then join in com-munal prayer for wisdom, prudence, and right judgment enlightened not by our political views, but influenced by our religious views.

Let us pray… Good and gracious God,

You are a God of justice and mercy. Enlighten our minds to choose what is right in your eyes and

grant us the wisdom to acknowledge what is right. Enlighten our lives with the fire of your love and strengthen

us to work for the common good and not our individual needs. For it is through your goodness that we have all we need to do

your will in our nation. We ask all this, in and through the name of Jesus, your Son

who lives with you and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Special 2nd Collection Gabriel Lara, director of the Quinn Community Center

of St. Eulalia, will speak briefly after the homily next Sun-day to talk about the many programs offered at the Quinn Community Center. Since we joined in partnership with the Center over two years ago, some of our parishioners have volunteered and seen first hand the great impact this center has had on the families and children it serves. Our Knights of Columbus have supported the center with fund-raising dinners, and our school and religious education pro-gram, with the help of our CCW, are currently collecting art supplies and preparing to help stock and reorganize the center’s art studio. These are just a few ways that we have been sharing in the ministries of the Quinn Center. Today help us continue to help the Quinn Community Center and its ministries through our special second collection.

Taking Your Faith on Vacation As you make your vacation plans for the summer, be sure to

include time on Sundays to attend Mass wherever you are. Our obligation to worship and thank God at Sunday Eucharist never takes a break. The website, www.masstimes.org, has Mass sched-ules for churches around the country and around the world. Visit-ing different Catholic churches while on vacation can be enriching and enjoyable.

Please remember to continue your stewardship com-mitment to Visitation during these summer months as parish expenses continue even during summer vaca-tion.

FAITH FORMATION

Faith Matt-ers By Matt Pozen—Director of Parish Faith Formation

Page 5

Faithful Citizenship (May 1, 2016) In Part II of Faithful Citizenship, the US bishops apply the general moral principles which they developed in Part I to vari-

ous concrete issues facing our nation today. Last week we looked at the following issues under the heading of “economic justice”: faith-based social services, conscience protection, health care, Medicare, and Social Security. In paragraph 81, Faithful Citizenship moves on to address the controversial topic of immigration: “The Gospel mandate to ‘welcome the stranger’ requires Catholics to care for and stand with newcomers, authorized and unauthorized, including unaccompanied immigrant children, refugees and asylum-seekers, those unnecessarily detained, and victims of human trafficking. Compre-hensive reform is urgently necessary to fix a broken immigration system and should include a broad and fair legalization program with a path to citizenship; a work program with worker protections and just wages; family reunification policies; access to legal protections, which include due process procedures; refuge for those fleeing persecution and violence; and policies to address the root causes of migration. The right and responsibility of nations to control their borders and to main-tain the rule of law should be recognized but pursued in a just and humane manner.”

The Catholic Church, through its bishops, priests, nuns, and lay people, is one of the most visible and forceful advocates for the rights and human dignity of immigrants in our country, both documented and undocumented. Perhaps it is because of our history of being an “immigrant church” in a society which was often less then welcoming that we have a special place in our hearts for the plight of immigrants. At the national level, the bishops support both comprehensive immigration reform and the r ight and responsibility of nations to control their borders and maintain the rule of law.

Paragraph 82 moves on to the crucial topic of education, which, due to the ongoing battle between Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), has grabbed national headlines lately. The bishops state: “Parents — the first and most important educators — have a fundamental right to choose the education best suited to the needs of their children, including public, private, and religious schools. Government, through such means as tax credits and publicly funded scholarships, should help provide resources for parents, especially those of modest means, to exercise this basic right without discrimination. Students in all educational settings should have opportunities for moral and character formation consistent with the beliefs and responsibilities of their parents.”

Paragraph 84 focuses on to the topics of crime, violence, and the prison system: “Promoting moral responsibility and ef-fective responses to violent crime, curbing violence in media, supporting reasonable restrictions on access to assault weap-ons and handguns, and opposing the use of the death penalty are particularly important in light of a growing ‘culture of vio-lence.’ An ethic of responsibility, rehabilitation, and restoration should be a foundation for the reform of our broken crimi-nal justice system. A remedial, rather than a strictly punitive, approach to offenders should be developed.” This year has been an especially violent one in Chicago, grabbing national attention. The bishops emphasize that healing our growing “culture of violence” requires a multifaceted approach. It’s not as simple as just hiring more cops, though this may be part of the solution.

In paragraph 85 the bishops address the lingering effects of racism and discrimination in our society: “It is important for our society to continue to combat discrimination based on race, religion, sex, ethnicity, disabling condition, or age, as these are grave injustices and affronts to human dignity. Where the effects of past discrimination persist, society has the obligation to take positive steps to overcome the legacy of injustice, including vigorous action to remove barriers to education and equal employment for women and minorities.

Paragraph 86 focuses on care for the environment: “Care for Creation is a moral issue. Protecting the land, water, and air we share is a religious duty of stewardship and reflects our responsibility to born and unborn children, who are most vulnerable to environmental assault. We must answer the question that Pope Francis posed to the world: ‘What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?’ There are many concrete steps we can take to assure justice and solidarity between the generations. Effective initiatives are required for energy conserva-tion and the development of alternate, renewable, and clean-energy resources. Our Conference offers a distinctive call to seriously address global climate change, focusing on the virtue of prudence, pursuit of the common good, and the impact on the poor, particularly on vulnerable workers and the poorest nations. The United States should lead in contributing to the sustainable development of poorer nations and promoting greater justice in sharing the burden of environmental blight, ne-glect, and recovery. Our nation's efforts to reduce poverty should not be associated with demeaning and sometimes coercive population control programs. Instead of resolving the problems of the poor and thinking of how the world can be different, some can only propose a reduction in the birth rate. At times, developing countries face forms of international pressure which make economic assistance contingent on certain policies of "reproductive health."

The issue of the health of our environment has become extremely politicized and dictated by opposing ideologies. Until we come to some kind of consensus about the data and its interpretation, we’ll never be able to develop and commit to public policies and regulations which strive to protect the long-term health of our environment.

Mary and the Holy Spirit Let us meditate on the relationship between Mary, the Holy Virgin Mother of God and her spouse, the Holy Spirit. At the Annunciation, God sent an angel, a messenger, to mediate between Himself and Mary. Such humility on the part of God! And Mary, for her part, of-fered up to God her complete willingness to comply with His desires. When we think of Mary, we inevitably move

toward the Third Person of the Trinity. We ponder that beautiful relationship, perfect and holy. Mary pondered all the marvelous ways He manifested Himself in her life. Through Him, we have Our Savior, Jesus. Through Him, Mary guided the Apostles in the formation of the Catholic Church after Our Lord’s Ascension.

We are now beginning the beautiful month of May. In two weeks, we celebrate Pentecost. How appropriate it is to have the birth of the church within the month dedicated to the veneration of our Mother. We call her by many names, one of which is Holy Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. In the Gospel of Mathew 12:47 we read, “Your Mother and Your brothers are standing outside. They want to speak with You.”

At the Adoration Chapel we can go inside and immedi-ately encounter Jesus in a very special way. No one has to stand outside. Would that there was standing room only! Take time to visit the Adoration Chapel this May and hon-or your Heavenly Mother by honoring her son. Jesus prom-ised to send the Holy Spirit to each one of us after His As-cension. Ask to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, our Holy Advocate: wisdom, understanding, knowledge, fear of the Lord, piety, fortitude, and counsel. Then, your life can begin to bear fruit as fragrant as the lilies of the valley in May, only with a longevity that will be to your everlasting joy and God’s everlasting glory.

The Chapel is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is a serious need for adorers in two time slots: Sun-day, 12:00 noon to 1:00 #."., and Saturday, 2:00-3:00 #.". For more information, call Joan Taylor, 630-530-8963 or Mary Lewis, 630-941-9173.

Divine Mercy Corner Jesus said to St. Faustina: “I desire that you know more

profoundly the love that burns in My Heart for souls, and you will understand this when you meditate upon My Pas-sion. Call upon My mercy on behalf of sinners; I desire their salvation. When you say this prayer with a contrite heart and with faith on behalf of some sinner, I will give him the grace of conversion. This is the prayer:

O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of Mercy for us, I trust in You.” (Diary, 186, 187)

Catholic Reading Club May Selection

The Admirable Heart of Mary In keeping with the Catholic Reading Club tradition of

studying a book each May relating to the Blessed Virgin Mary, this month’s selection is The Admirable Heart of Mary by St. John Eudes, a great spir itual wr iter of the 17th century, St. John Eudes wrote this book to defend and promote the devotion to the Heart of Mary. He draws on Sacred Scripture, Tradition and the writings of the Church Fathers to build a structured edifice of enduring devotion to Our Lady, describing the mystical unity of the hearts of Jesus and Mary.

Last year we read the first half of the book, ending P. 152. This year, we will read the remainder of the book. This beautiful book helps us grow in our love of Our Lady and her role in Salvation.

Join us in discussing this remarkable book on Our Lady in the Fireside Room, Parish Center, 9:30-11:30 !.". on Thurs-day, May 19. A study guide for this book is available. If you would like a copy, please contact Madonna Muscarello, 630-325-7990 or email, [email protected].

Readers and visitors are always welcome to attend these meetings.

As part of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Immaculate Con-ception parish is one of the “Pilgrimage Churches” in the Diocese of Joliet. In celebration, we will open our I.C. Church to pilgrims from the parish and around the dio-cese each Saturday from 11:00 !.". to 1:00 #.". begin-ning on Saturday February 13 through November 26, 2016. Our hope is that people will take advantage of the opportunity to visit the church and pray. There is also the opportunity to obtain a plenary indulgence during the Year of Mercy by visiting a Pilgrimage Church with the inten-tion of acquiring the indulgence, going to confession (before or after the visit), receiving Holy Communion, making a profession of faith, praying for the Holy Father and for the intentions that he bears in his heart for the good of the church and of the entire world. Please plan to make a special visit with your family or friends during this Year of Mercy.
