Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) Thursday, May 5 is a holy day of obligation, the Solemnity of the

Ascension of the Lord. The schedule of Masses for Wednesday evening

and Thursday are listed elsewhere in this bulletin. Because of the con-

struction continuing at St. Joseph, no holy day Mass is scheduled at that

location this year. (2) Reconstruction of the St. Joseph Church parking

lot and handicap entrance continues. Until further notice, scheduled

weekday Masses are re-located to Most Holy Trinity Church. While weekend Masses

will continue at Saint Joseph, some parishioners may want to attend Mass at one of our

other church locations while work is in progress. This project is made possible by a

bequest from the estate of Marguerite Boivin. (3) Two dozen of our youth and adults

participated in the annual diocesan youth convention last weekend in Rockport. It is

an opportunity for our youth to network with other young Catholics around the state

while giving them access to special liturgies, workshops and speakers. One of our

youth, Katie Dube, was awarded the highly regarded St. Timothy Youth Recognition

Award “due to her outstanding Christian leadership, personal witness to the faith, posi-

tive example set for others and involvement in the life and mission of the parish and

local community.” Congratulations, Katie! (4) Assignment of Priests: Effective June

1, Fr. Robert C. Vaillancourt, former parochial vicar at St. Andre in Biddeford (1982-

85), and currently chaplain at Maine Medical Center with weekend duties at the parish

in Falmouth, has been named pastor of St. Brendan the Navigator Parish (Camden/

Rockland/Belfast/Islesboro/Vinalhaven). Fr. Paul G. Murray, currently residential

care (nursing homes/hospitals) chaplain in Auburn/Lewiston with some Mass ministry

in the Auburn churches, has been named administrator of Our Lady of Lakes Parish

(Oquossoc/Rangeley/Stratton/Sugarloaf Mountain). Effective April 15, Fr. Donal

MacVeigh, S.J., currently parochial vicar at Saints Mary and Joseph Parish in Salem,

NH, has been assigned as part-time hospital chaplain at Mercy Hospital and Maine

Medical, and part-time parochial vicar at Our Lady of Hope Parish (St. Joseph/St. Pius

X), all in Portland. (5) Jubilee Year of Mercy (May) -- In burying the dead, the innate

dignity of the human person -- soul and body -- is recognized and honored. The Book of Genesis teaches that human beings are created in the image of God, and the Gospel

reveals that, in Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, we are promised eternal life. In our

Christian faith, then, we have hope that we will rise with the Lord Jesus on the last day.

By interring the remains of the dead, we honor them and profess our faith that they are

alive in Jesus Christ. “And so, when you and your daughter-in-law Sarah prayed, I

brought a reminder of your prayer before the Holy One; and when you buried the dead,

I was likewise present with you” (Tobit 12:12). This week’s suggestion: Offer daily

prayers for the deceased and those with terminal illnesses. Send Mass cards to families

of those who have died. (6) Caution! Media reports call our attention to the danger of

deer ticks, which are especially numerous this year because of the warmer than normal

winter. Ticks may harbor Lyme disease, a bacterial infection that can make people sick

in various ways. Be cautious when you or your pets spend any time outdoors. (7)

Thank You of the Week: To parishioners who faithfully perform the tedious task of

counting the weekend offertory week after week. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 6 - Msgr. Tonne:

Sister had read to her third-graders the story of the Prodigal Son. Then, to test how they

had paid attention, she asked: “Who was unhappy at the return of the Prodigal Son?”

After a slight pause one lad shouted: “The fatted calf.”

“When a portrait is spoiled, the only way to renew it is for the Subject to come back to the studio and sit for the artist all over again. That is why Christ came--to make it possible for the divine image in man to be recre-

ated. We were made in God's likeness; we are re-made in the likeness of his Son.”

Mass in an envelope marked "50/50 Club."

$5 a month, $30 for 6 months, $60 for a year.

The Culture of Life Committee, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, and in conjunction with Good Shepherd Parish, are proud to launch their

first annual BABY BOTTLE DRIVE. It will be initiated on Mother’s Day and run until Father’s Day. Help us to Proclaim, Celebrate and

Serve the Gospel of Life. The ultimate purpose is to protect and promote life with projects, like raising funds to purchase an ultrasound machine. The National Knights of Columbus will generously match our funds for

the purchase of such a machine if we are able to raise $10,000. It has been proven that once a mother in crisis can see her baby on an ultra-sound picture, that mother, 99% of the time, will choose life for her

unborn child. What a wonderful way in which we can all help to support life. Who knows who this little life will become someday!

Instructions on how this drive will work are included with each bottle. Thank You for participating in this most merciful endeavor, especially

in this Year of Mercy. Pick up a bottle at the end of Mass next week, and return it in the appropriately marked containers on Father’s Day.

An outdoor Rosary Procession & May Crowning of Our Lady, sponsored by the Secular Franciscans, will be held on the 1st Saturday, May 7, beginning at 10 am at the Franciscan Monastery in Kennebunk.

This ceremony will be preceded by a Mass at 8 am, and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament till 10 am. Bring your family & friends to join us

for all or part of this beautiful and traditional May Devotion to our Blessed Mother. Rain or shine. FMI call Lucienne Nulton, 205-7110.

May 6 - May 12: A Directed Ignatian Retreat w/ Christine Moroni, spiritual director & theology student at Boston College. This kind of retreat is an individual walk with Jesus through Scripture; not a preached retreat. It is a 1-on-1 discussion with the director in shared prayer & focus for spiritu-al growth. The person making the retreat eats & sleeps at home. There are 4 or 5 prayer periods/day (20 - 40 min.) and a private, daily interview (30 - 45

min.), by arrangement at either MHT Church or Marie Fitzbach Convent (290 Elm St.), whichever is convenient. If interested, please call the parish, 282-3321; or Christine, 218-235-7223 to register. Requesting a donation.

ST JOSEPH CHURCH PARKING LOT UPDATE: Thus far crews have focused on installing 5 catch basins, and the connecting drainage pipe across the parking lot. This will dramatically improve surface drainage. We are also coordinating with the city to separate storm and sewer drain-age, as well as replacing an original brick manhole with a precast concrete structure. Work will soon begin on the construction of the new section of St. Joseph Street.
