May 20, 2018 Pentecost Sunday

Dear Parishioners,

This is the Feast of Pentecost, which marks an end to the Easter Season. One of the important aspects of Pentecost is found in the Acts of the Apostles. In the passage, people from many different lands and languages hear the message of Saint Peter and are baptized. It is yet another reminder that the Gospel is for all people. As a priest, I have found that my own experiences with different cultures have strengthened my own faith life. Traveling around the world, I have discovered that our faith is indeed rich in customs and priorities. This was especially brought home in Poland during the festivities around World Youth Day. The prayers with the Holy Father were done in so many languages and celebrated in a variety of styles. We had music that ranged from Christian Rock to sacred chant. We prayed together before the Blessed Sacrament. It was very powerful. As we celebrate this Pentecost, let us pray for a greater sense of unity in diversity. Let us pray for an openness to learn from each other. Through the continued generosity of those who support To Teach Who Christ Is, we are continuing improvements of our facilities this summer. They will include the following:

-Landscaping improvements, including repair of the back walkway stonework, the return of the Cross to the Mary Garden, and adding mulch

-The parking lot will be resealed and re-striped -A railing will be installed to assist walking up the sidewalk in the winter -A canopy will be added to the handicap entrance to keep people out of the elements -The outside woodwork with be repainted -The second floor classrooms and hallway will be painted and the classrooms will receive new carpets -Four public washrooms will receive new floor tiling -The remaining church pews will be refinished

All of this is a part of the To Teach Who Christ Is effort. As we enter the summer months, I ask you to be faithful to your regular contributions as well. This year we will collect about $50,000 less in the Sunday collections. Fortunately, much of this is offset by a very strong Christmas collection and some special gifts and bequests. Nonetheless, we rely on a weekly basis on your continued generosity and in the summer, there is always a shortfall due to vacations and the like. Please continue to support your parish while away. One way to do so is to set up electronic giving. It is easy to do and makes budgeting easy. I use it for my contributions and so do many parishioners. Finally, I have learned that Saint Anne’s Religious Goods Shop on La Grange Rd. will be going out of business this summer. Many of you have bought religious articles there. Please consider stopping by as they reduce their inventory. It can be a way to assist them and help yourself as well. In Christ,

Father Mike
