Beyond Green - Drawing on Nature: Tuesday, May 22, 2007Current green practice is primarily directed at mitigating the environmental impacts of buildings.Though this is an important beginning, a transition to an environmentally sustainable future willinvariably parallel the rate and extent to which we model all human enterprise, includingbuildings, infrastructure, and settlement patterns on natural systems and processes. Dr. Ray Cole,Professor and Director of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at theUniversity of British Columbia, will discuss theories and case studies of buildings, exploringcurrent green design, industrial and construction ecology, biophylia and biomimicry, adaptive, restorative, and regenerative design. Dr. Cole will review the ways and extent that naturalsystems and processes are evidenced in current green design, and he will explore the lessons that

can be drawn from nature as we look for legitimate concepts and models to shape future practice.Instructor: Raymond Cole, Ph.D.Time: 9:00 am to 12:30 pmLOCATION: PG&Es Pacific Energy Center 851 Howard Street, b/t 4th and 5th (SF)Info: http://www.pge.com/pecCost: Free
